Yeah - I walk through Govanhill twice a day, never had any bother (don't know what it's like later at night though). The only time I've ever felt in danger in Glasgow was on Byres Road a few years ago (running street fight involving over a dozen dressed-for-clubs bams). by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 30th Jan 2019 10:01am)
  • The quote I think sums it up best is: *"Better to ignore those who have managed to figure out how to monetise their malignance."* It's an unfortunate fact that plenty (I'm sure you can think of others) of "celebrities'" careers depend on us hating them, and generating controversy - you're right in trying to ignore them. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 31st Jan 2019 12:59pm)
  • Appealing to their better nature just won't work; the opposite, however, will. Deposit scheme; not just for bottles, but for everything that'll take a barcode/qrcode. Set the deposit at whatever it takes to get a sufficient change in behaviour - start at 20% of purchase price, stick it right up to 100% or more if necessary. If stuff gets lost or binned it would be a freebie to the manufacturers/retailers, so tax them the difference between what they make and what gets returned. Even if people still don't care (through stupidity, drunkeness, etc.) someone who needs the money will still pick it up. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 21st Feb 2019 12:38pm)
  • Not heroic, but maybe necessary - if this boy doesn't get a whole life sentence (serious question - what is the likelihood of this?). Not someone I'd want to share a planet with, even after being inside for decades, assuming he did it (based on published evidence, looks likely). by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 21st Feb 2019 12:42pm)
  • Key was in the door, apparently. Unlocked doors aren't uncommon outside busy places, but given the dad was a cannabis dealer, you might expect him to make the place a bit more secure. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 9:27am)
  • You could have used the small claims court against him - he wouldn't have turned up, thinking the police would be there, which would have been a win by default. They could possibly have taken the money off his benefits, or something. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 1st Mar 2019 12:36pm)
  • I see two urinals - about when would they have been removed? Also, https://www.nls.uk/ is full of maps like this. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 3rd Mar 2019 8:36pm)
  • This doesn't help you right now, but when the deposit scheme comes in for plastic bottles, there will be an immediate effect (people won't want to lose the deposit by littering, and even if they do, someone who sees a bottle lying will happily grab it for the cash). While people are appreciating the decrease in litter, there may be enough good will to gradually phase out (then ban) all non-deposit packaging, not just bottles. *Then* would be the time to start writing to your MSP. Right now, certainly contact the school, and your local councilors (councilors, *not* the council). by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 15th Mar 2019 10:20am)
  • If you ever get a cold-call scam, and have the time, do your best to keep them on the line as long as possible. Pretending to completely fall for their act, and also to be an ideal target, probably helps too. If you can spin it out to the extent they try to send somebody to collect, you could either let the police know, or just send them to a non-existent address. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 17th Mar 2019 10:58am)
  • Which one? "People Make Glasgow", I assume? ("Glasgow's Miles Better" is the only other one I can remember, but there might be others.) I don't really care - the only thing I know about it is the slogan - the only places I see it are on the old college tower on North Hanover Street and on the lapel badges of people trying to ingratiate themselves with whichever elements of the Council thought it up (this is far too much like the senior politicians in the USA always ensuring they wear a flag on their lapels - we don't need it, or stuff like it, over here). I'd rather it didn't exist, but given that there are probably much worse things on which our taxes are being wasted, it's of minimal concern. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 19th Mar 2019 11:05am)
  • No - but I've never actually talked about it with friends/family/colleagues; it's apparently not been remarkable enough to start a conversation. If we start to see it used in news stories where a Glaswegian has comitted some bizarre criminal act (like the "Florida Man" thing), it'll be some way to comfirming it's no longer being used in the way it's intended. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 19th Mar 2019 2:14pm)
  • There's been a big trial at the High Court the past few weeks, gangster stuff. They do the van / police cars / police motorbikes convoy twice a day (there and back). It'd probably cost less to keep them in cells at the court though. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 22nd Mar 2019 10:18pm)

  • It's about 20 miles away, but I've always had a good experience with Ian Lynch (https://www.dentistkilmacolm.co.uk/ - it's a new dental practice, but he's been in that building for years). • I used to teach there, so may be biased, but anyway: 1. It's fine, *occasionally* you hear about muggings, but apparently it's mostly people who were obviously vulnerable (e.g. drunk and/or alone). Just avoid what's obviously sketchy in the dark (lanes, riverside paths, etc.). 2. Good - you can also use the facilities at the other (bigger, but busier) campus which is 15-20mins walk away. The lecturers will do their best to get you through, if you're willing to put the work in - if you don't like the way a particular lecturer teaches something, ask another one about anything that doesn't make sense. 3. Plenty - see below though. Remember, there's officially no alcohol allowed in the halls. 4. Avoid the buses if you can - they're overpriced. Walking is better for anything under a couple of miles. Your biggest issue may be workload - depending on the course, you can be in classes 35 hours per week (NOT counting studying), this is considerably more than "full-time" in typical universities/colleges, and at a similar level of difficulty. If there's anything you don't understand, get on top of it ASAP. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 16th Apr 2019 3:06pm)

  • Dunno if this was with cubs or scouts (when does that change over? I think we were 12 or so, old enough to never entirely believe there was any danger), but they took us to this for some reason. This was before pistols were banned - I think it might have been "real" blank ammunition they used when the guard shot the guy who had the chestburster about to come out (louder than I expected). Was the routine that the alien got the guard as well? It was either her or someone pretending to be a customer got dragged away, but I can't remember now. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sat 20th Apr 2019 10:12pm)

  • Another option? - massively increase the difficulty of the driving test (admittedly not something that could be done locally) - the remaining drivers would be safer, and probably more committed too. You could go wild here - requiring multiple tests (cover the full range of daytime/nighttime, in rain/ice/snow, motorway/urban/rural/off-road, navigation with paper maps and electronic devices), require simulator (yes, actually build full-motion simulators like for aircraft in the test centres) experience to practise for emergencies like recovery from skids, blowouts, collisions etc., a shitload more theory tests covering motoring law, car maintenance/repair, engine/suspension/electrical principles. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 26th Apr 2019 3:44pm)

  • A proper deposit scheme *will* sort this - anything that's likely to be binned and physically able to have a QR code / barcode printed on it should have a deposit added to the purchase price, at whatever level will make people actually return it (or to get random people to pick it up, then cash it in). • I think it's probably down to how quiet bikes are - we all realise this consciously, of course, but most of the time we're "looking out" subconsciously - it's often a "wtf" when I'm overtaken by a cyclist on a shared path, and nearly a close call a couple of times when I've moved out of the wrong way (there's not really any time to check whether stepping right/left is better once you can hear them). I'd suggest cards taped to the forks hitting the spokes, or a speaker playing white noise, but then you'd probably get people complaining about that instead... An excessively bright head torch might help make people pause before stepping out? by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 7th May 2019 11:09am)
  • ☝️ This. • We expect the road to be safe for light and slow vehicles as well as heavy and fast vehicles, and that's not necessarily a reasonable expectation. At the lower end, a bike and rider could be 50kg, or even less, while a lorry could be 44000kg. Given that collisions between vehicles are realistically unavoidable (expecting every road user to be careful, considerate, and competent is definitely unrealistic) it's crazy to make them use the same bits of tarmac. There are solutions, some crazier than others (more bike lanes, reducing maximum legal vehicle weights, crash testing bikes...) - how many of those could work, politically? by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 22nd May 2019 10:13pm)

  • I was the same with Three, the signal loss was particularly bad in bits of Shawlands, changed to Virgin (uses EE network) and had no problems. Cancelling is a pain, however, the guy on the phone kept saying I'd have the same problems with any other network and trying to persuade me to stay. You need to make up a reason for cancelling they can't argue with - emigration, prison, terminal illness, etc. by S4qFBxkFFg (Mon 24th Jun 2019 9:30am)
  • You're right - never heard of them; and no, I don't like what they're about, but not living in the city centre it doesn't really impact me, so it goes into the same category as the orange loyal boys or whatever they call themselves - I don't like it either, but they've got the right to march down the streets. So if I'm in town that day, it'll be a roll of the eyes, and some irritated muttering if I'm delayed, same as if I encounter an orange walk (about a handful of times so far). > This is a essentially a group that supports terrorism If you have evidence of that, forget the 0141 number, you want 101. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 25th Jun 2019 11:32am)

  • That could be got around, in a quite heavy-handed way - auctioning of start times for employers (+schools/colleges/unis?). For example, for every employee you want to start at 09:00 on a Monday, you put a bid in, for a finite number of permits. Once they're all taken, open the bidding for 08:59:59 and 09:00:01. No idea how it could be enforced though. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 25th Jul 2019 2:10pm)
  • Essentially, I was trying to say that businesses that keep "normal" office hours are the ones contributing to congestion, and they should therefore pay more for the privilege; the auction thing was a half-arsed way of implementing it. More sensible suggestion? - congestion charging that's timed - so if you want to drive in the city centre between 0800-0900 or 1700-1800 for example, it's a more expensive permit than one that's valid outside those times. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 25th Jul 2019 4:53pm)

  • We need actual barriers, like on some level crossings. Saw a video of one in Russia, which was just a big metal plate that rises out of the road - driving onto it from the level crossing side, it's like a ramp that drops under the weight of the vehicle, driving from the other direction, it stops the vehicle, without requiring the driver to brake. So effectively that in this case the engine block (which went over the plate, somehow) was effectively peeled away from the frame/wheels (which were lodged quite far under the plate). by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 28th Jan 2020 12:14pm)

A typical human's centre of gravity (unless they're morbidly obese) is in the chest area, not the belly, and if they hit a barrier horizontally while not fully in control (e.g. drunk, off-balance, distracted) it's quite easy to pivot over and fall. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 29th Mar 2020 1:09pm)

  • >Or the way the central atrium of the main building is empty right up to the top with the wards on the sides. Next time you're in there walk into the central atrium and just sort of look up - and think about all the empty space there all the way up to the ceiling and what it could have been used for. Why did the design of this place involve so much wasted space? Atria don't add that much cost to a building, unlike the "stuff" that you're probably thinking should have been in that space instead. If you're not externally constrained (i.e. there's not much stopping you expanding the building's footprint) an atrium is a good way of providing natural light to the interior, as well as having a large all-weather space for people to pass through when arriving and leaving - or just hanging around. >Why was this place built with windows that don't open? A lot of areas and even some patient rooms don't have windows at all. It's so hot and airless patients and staff are sweating through their clothes. It's as if we're sealed in there. Unlike the previous point, this is something I hate about modern architecture - it's assumed by the architects that the building management system (heating, cooling, air quality...) is *perfect*, knows better than the building's occupants how conditions should be, and should not be disrupted by silly people opening windows. This is, putting it mildly, optimistic; it's also how you get personal heaters, fans, etc. lying around (or, if things are bad, ice packs or hand warmers taped to temperature sensors). Giving as localised control as possible to people over their environment would be better. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 11th Aug 2020 7:23am)

  • The problem with the Greens is that (rightly or wrongly) there's a suspicion from many people, that they will be *much* harsher on general waste disposal than the other parties. I don't know what the current thinking is in mainstream environmentalism, but it really needs to be (and seen to be) that onerous obligations and changes to current practices, if the Greens get their way, *only* fall on the powerful. What I'm trying to get across, is that there is a perception (no doubt encouraged by media interests) that environmentalism punches down as often (or more) as it punches up. It's probably better to ban a packaging substance that can't be economically reused, than force it to be recycled at greater cost than throwing it in a landfill, which only works on a national/international basis. I'm aware this isn't a solution, just saying trying to get people to trust the Greens on the local issue of domestic waste might well be doomed. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:15pm)
  • > I think the reality is that many corporations are the ones pushing for individuals to change, e.g. telling people to drive less/recycle more/use less water, when the reality is that industrial and corporate use greatly exceeds that of individuals. I agree. My worry is that a Green council would, understandably, seek to do what they can with the powers they have, and because they only have local power, will *not* be able to impose themselves on large businesses, and will end up with no option to achieve their goals other than doing things like shrinking our general waste bins, or making it impossibly expensive to own a car without a driveway (this could be done scarily easily by introducing high charges for street parking), for example. This is admittedly without considering things they would do of which I'd approve. The manifesto link is irritating too, particularly their points about waste and incineration: if we can use power from sources like wind/hydro/nuclear, the waste that isn't economical to recycle can literally be reduced to atoms with things like [plasma gasification/pyrolysis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_gasification). Do we really want to remove that possibility? by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 1st Apr 2021 4:56pm)
  • There's also a lot of charging capacity that can be activated relatively quickly; when our work got a couple new buildings constructed a few years ago, they put some electric chargers in the car parks, but there are cables already laid to connect many more chargers if the bosses decide it's worth it. • With my GTX 750 Ti, I share the pain. It will pass though, copypasting a previous post: Eventually, things will probably change, there are a few different ways it could happen: Manufacturing catches up, more chips get fabbed, and more cards get to the retailers (yes, miners will snap them up, but will eventually let them go to the second hand market). Cryptocurrency prices crash, the miners unplug their kit, least efficient first, and, again, sell cards. Someone further up the supply chain raises prices to silly levels. At the moment, it's the scalpers and reseller platforms (i.e. ebay) that are taking the profits, there's only so long that sort of money gets left on the table, so we're waiting until either the consumer retailers, card manufacturers, or chip manufacturers decide they want in. If AMD/Nvidia do, expect them to justify it by saying they need to invest in the first option above. Game developers reassess what their target platform looks like. If your game needs a recent GPU to be enjoyable, you're going to have a bad time. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 4th May 2021 4:52pm)
  • Couldn't say for sure, and this isn't any kind justification, but there's comparatively less space for pedal bikes compared to pedestrians and cars meaning, for at least some of most journeys, they inevitably occupy spaces that aren't the most suitable. The fact that bikes (of any type) are expected to use the same bit of tarmac as a lorry seems crazy if I think about it, but it's generally accepted. This is why, even though I hate riding a bike and would be dead set against a child of mine riding one on a city street or main road, as a driver and pedestrian, I *love* bike lanes. Anything that segregates vehicles roughly by mass and speed makes it less stressful for everyone. by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 5th May 2021 8:50pm)

  • I agree with the goal here, but would prefer it wasn't imposed through multiple sets of local regulations. If the problem is with the vehicle engines themselves, it would be good if the *manufacturers* could be targeted. For example, a tax could be levied on manufacturers based on how many of their vehicles with the worst engines are still registered. Once these costs became large enough, they would have to start offering incentives to owners to switch vehicles. This could even lead to the amusing situation where a carmaker is persistently begging an owner to accept a free replacement. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 1:06pm)
  • That would be good: I just want to get to the point where a polite flunkey sent by the maker of my shitty hatchback turns up at my door and invites me to consider a selection of engines on an accompanying flatbed lorry, one of which will be installed by the mechanics waiting in their nearby van, should I graciously accept the considerable cheque offered. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 2:02pm)

  • It's not OK, but consider why shoplifting in a modern supermarket (or most other shops) is so *easy*: imagine a "traditional" shop (butcher, baker, candlestick maker, etc.), you walk in, wait at a counter, say what you want, pay for it, and *the shopkeeper picks it up off a shelf or counter and gives it to you*. A few decades ago, someone realised shops don't actually need to have the picking-stuff-up-for-customers as an employee's duty because you can just make the customers *do it for free*. Every so often, something that was done *for* us becomes something done *by* us; another, more recent, example is self checkout. I can accept some, maybe most, customers prefer this system, but the fact that a business chooses a less secure mode of operation simply to cut costs means I have little sympathy when it encounters the inevitable problems. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 5th Oct 2021 10:52am)
  • If I had dictatorial powers, a tunnel from approximately J22 to J14. You'd have to go under the Clyde and the railways so with 6 lanes the price would probably be into 10 figures: not impossible for the Scottish Government, but unlikely. Maybe keep the existing bit of city centre motorway, but try to turn it into a "normal" road and reclaim some of the adjacent land; selling it might recoup a small proportion of the cost. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 12th Oct 2021 1:29pm)
  • Nationwide here too (remember, they're a building society, so all things being equal, they should charge less fees, and pay more interest, as they don't pay dividends to shareholders) and I haven't had any problems. TSB is mostly fine, they seem to have fewer issues every time I have to make an unusual transaction. It's good to have multiple bank accounts just in case something goes wrong: if you depend on internet to use your bank, a random fault in its computer systems could make it inaccessible for days (TSB again a couple of years back). It's fairly easy to set up a standing order to, for example, transfer half your salary and to split the various outgoings across accounts. Given the hassle setting up an account with a new bank, there usually isn't any reason to close an account, just keep it active my transferring something like £1 in/out a few times a year. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 17th Oct 2021 11:57am)

This is surprising, as I thought the Scotland had responsibility for road building (e.g. there were disagreements between the SNP and Greens over road expansion). What actually is the position here? by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 19th Oct 2021 9:11am)
  • Examples of proposed alternatives to address the issues you raise are hydrogen delivered through the existing gas system, and fast battery swap stations so that "charging" a car can be done in a similar time to filling a petrol tank. Neither of these (or any other measures) are a sure thing though, and I fear some people will be stuck with no alternative but to use conventional electric heaters (expensive) and we'll also see daisy-chained extension cords (suitable for outdoor use if you're lucky) covering pavements in dense residential areas. I'm reminded of the quote about equality saying something like *"The law is utterly impartial: it forbids both the rich man and the poor man from sleeping under a bridge, and imposes exactly the same penalty on both for doing so."* Consider someone with no driveway, cycling to work in the rain, alongside HGVs and electric cars, their occupants warm, dry, and comfortable. When even the least fortunate of our decision makers who matter can rely on affording a property with enough space for a borehole and driveway (before even considering official cars, expensed taxis, etc.) it's easy to see how certain people might not be considered in some types of green society. Is it that difficult to imagine a Prime Minister saying something like *"Hurrah for Brexit Britain! Hurrah for the environment! No more nasty fossil fuels or old boilers here! ...but enough of $female_opposition_politician!"* while opening a factory making heat pumps? • > Heat pumps are really cool. They're great technology that can produce 3x the amount of heat output for electric input (vs. a traditional 100% efficient electric heater, that outputs 1 to 1). Should further diversions be required at short notice for operational purposes, we will look to establish additional patrols in the area to provide reassurance.* Shouldn't there be some effort to identify the organisation and individual who made the "real-time changes to operational plans" and hold them accountable? For example, the company has to pay £X per day, per lane blocked, per length of blockage in metres (with some multiplier for busier roads, junctions, etc.). Wee buses every 10mins, £1.50, and they made absolutely sure you got where you were going, little things like no shock absorber (but spring still present and functioning perfectly) on a front wheel wouldn't hold them up, despite the passengers getting a bit bouncy. I recall when I was coming home on one of their buses, unfortunately listening to an obnoxious guy's phone conversation, eager to use the words "Shitty Sprinter" as many times as he could during the call. • This is one of those things that sound like a typical conspiracy theory, but is actually true. Although, the polymer/petrochemical industries weren't really worried about feelings, they were scared their products would be regulated into unprofitability due to the vast amount of waste generated. If they could establish the custom that *other people* would pay for cleaning up their waste, the problem would not arise. It's difficult to realise how much of a change was brought by the adoption of plastic, all the materials it replaced were either valuable enough to be worth recovery even if you disregard the waste issue (metal, glass, etc.), or would mechanically or biologically degrade fairly quickly (wood, paper, textiles). I don't know what the actual solution would be, plastic is extremely cheap compared to alternative materials, so a tax at source would have significant side-effects, but might be necessary. by S4qFBxkFFg (Mon 10th Jan 2022 6:20pm)

  • As others have said, probably best ignoring. I think there's legislation known as "keeper liability" not yet in force that will require registered keepers of cars to identify drivers (one of the things the SNP have done with which I'm unhappy), so at some point it will be easier for these parking enforcement companies and this advice may no longer apply. The whole thing doesn't sit well with me, these fines are only "necessary" for organisations that decide to forego investing in physically securing their parking: for example, having a barrier/ticket system that you often see in multi-storey car parks. Maybe it's more rewarding to try and get £100 out of a few people, than £1 out of everyone. by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 12th Jan 2022 1:52pm)
  • Yeah, unless the asymmetry is removed (when a pedestrian and car collide, it's usually obvious which side will take the most damage) that's just sensible, so until I can afford an actual mecha, I won't be exercising my pedestrian's rights to their full extent. Even on designated crossings, I've had some close calls; sometimes I wish I could outfit every crossing with a line of these: https://youtu.be/YjC4WhLljFI?t=40 by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 14th Jan 2022 5:44pm)
  • This is why I think crossings should have physical barriers or gates: don't give any road users the option to move until they have right of way, whether accidentally or intentionally (yes, pedestrians could climb over, but there's not much can be done about that). There are companies making rising bollards that can stop HGVs, so handling cars and bicycles needn't be a problem. It could probably even be funded by imposing excessive fines on the people stupid enough to hit them (or their estates). by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 16th Jan 2022 10:46am)
  • There are stretches of roads which already depend on mechanical systems to remain clear: level crossing barriers and moving bridges are the examples that come to mind easily, so similar issues exist already. Presumably the organisations who repair traffic signals would be responsible, and would treat clearing an impassable main road as a high priority go-there-right-now problem. An optimist would say that the road owner (e.g. local Council) would have a sensible maintenance contract, with agreed service levels, penalties for lengthy repairs, etc. by S4qFBxkFFg (Sun 16th Jan 2022 11:17am)

  • The situation sounds sort of like my landlord when I was renting: he actually lived right next door, and the two houses were once one (some doors were blocked off and an extra staircase had been added and external door added, so the layout was really weird) my gas and electricity even came through his meters, so I didn't have to worry about utility bills apart from the phone line. He was decent about repairs and pets, full deposit back too (this was before the protection scheme existed). So yes, it's definitely possible, but I think it's a lot more likely when you're in the same building, or they're otherwise invested in keeping things amicable with their tenants. by S4qFBxkFFg (Mon 17th Jan 2022 10:59am)

Anyway, there are two campuses, one on Cathedral Street, and one on the South bank of the Clyde (which deals mainly with the Nautical and Engineering courses). You'll be told which one your classes are in, and probably won't be spending much time in the other building. Other replies have got you covered, but if you're wanting a cheap corner-shop type place, there's one just behind the main building which you wouldn't find unless you were looking for it, here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.8639624,-4.2424602,75a,35y,34.5h,47.8t/data=!3m1!1e3 by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 19th Jan 2022 10:29am)

  • Those were some ambitious plans: it involved a bridge over Cathedral Street to get to a new multi-storey car park over the "empty" space in Queen Street station. The existing car park would then be demolished to make space for the new cinema, restaurants, etc. If I remember right, demolition had barely started on the car park (pretty much just the scaffolding being erected) before it was all cancelled. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 21st Jan 2022 5:34pm)

  • Long range is, for fairly obvious reasons, less accessible than stuff like 25m and below. If you're willing to do that though (at least to start), it's an option. I've been to two clubs in the area, Wishaw and District, and Bearsden. W&D use the TA range in Motherwell, which isn't really that pleasant - there's no separate clubhouse bit attached, and a maximum of 3 (I think) shooting at once. Bearsden is a bit better (although I've not been there in the last decade, and even that was with a tenant club), it's a lot more comfortable, and more people (5-ish) can shoot at once. I was thinking of getting back into it for a while, but can't really justify the expense/hassle at the moment: let me know if you find something good though. by S4qFBxkFFg (Tue 22nd Mar 2022 4:38pm)

  • I did a PPL at Cumbernauld, although the school went bust several years ago (fortunately after I qualified). I think there are two fixed wing training organisations based there at the moment, but they do tend to change every so often. My comparison of the different locations: Glasgow - too busy Prestwick - less busy, but you'll still have to deal with big airport stuff (taxi clearances, waiting for wake turbulence, etc.), better weather than the others (usually) so you probably won't spend as much time sitting around waiting for clearer skies Cumbernauld - OK, it's a little higher up though, so sometimes the cloud is too low for even doing circuits, it's very rare to be delayed by other traffic As for choosing a school/club, try a few hours with each, and go with whichever one is best for you. Finally, **DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PAY FOR FLYING TRAINING MORE THAN A DAY IN ADVANCE**. Many flying schools try to improve their cash flow by offering discounts if you buy blocks of training hours, rather than just giving you a bill after landing. If they go bust after you pay, but before you fly, you will likely never see the money again. The only time I'd recommend you take an offer like this, is if you turn up first thing in the morning wanting to get several hours in, the weather forecast is excellent, and there's an instructor and aircraft free all day, and you only pay for that day's flying on that day. by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 20th Apr 2022 10:17am)

  • > Kids made to clean up around school during their break? I'd consider that a bad idea, because all kids that don't drop litter would be punished for others doing so, leading to resentment. > Harsher enforcement of littering laws? (People and businesses.) Good idea, but crime / bad behaviour has been shown to be deterred much more by likelihood of being penalised, than punishment harshness. Either that means *many* more litter wardens (do they even still exist?) or some other type of surveillance, both of which seem expensive. > Higher council tax to provide more bins and more regular emptying? ISTR reading that the bins are a relatively small part of council expenditure, so a modest increase, specifically for this purpose, might have a significant effect. > Maybe owners responsible to the area of pavement in front of their property/business and made to keep it clean or get fined? Again, this is too close to punishing the wrong person for my liking, and will make it even less desirable to live in already shitty places. It's possible that people end up outsourcing this to private waste firms, and we're a step closer to privatising the bins (wrong direction imo). > Promotion of community clean ups? Nothing to criticise there, although it would be nice to see some actual substance: providing PPE, pickers, bags, H&S training, etc. Ultimately it's down to the "just don't give a shit" mentality, and unless we can get rid of the people with it (feel free to incorrectly assume I mean through education) the problem will persist. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 21st Jul 2022 10:56am)

I messaged mine a while ago, text below: > I'm sure you're aware of the significant rises in energy costs this year, I have personally been affected by this, and fortunately so far my family have been able to cope with the cost but am very concerned this situation will worsen during the rest of this year and further into the future. I would be very grateful if you could use your position in parliament to help alleviate these problems either through supporting relevant legislation, liaising with OFGEM, or any other way possible. > > Particularly concerning are the standing charges consumers pay, no matter what amount of gas or electricity is used. These disproportionately affect the people who use the least energy, including those in poverty, and also those who have managed to reduce their energy use for any other reason (to lessen their impact on the environment, for example). It would be very welcome if such charges were banned, and the shortfall made up on the per-unit charges. > > I am writing to you assuming that as energy issues are the responsibility of the Westminster parliament, I should be contacting my MP as opposed to an MSP; please correct me if I'm wrong. • We (tenement of eight) are currently having maybe one in three of our blue bin collections take place, the street bins (which, tbf, are emptied more often) fill up within about a day. With the same amount of manpower, adding another distinct waste stream simply will not work. Given there physically isn't any space in the bin store (already four green, four blue) for another wheelie bin, I suspect the plan is to take away two of the existing blue bins, and maybe we get two light blue / dark blue / teal / aqua / navy blue bins, solely for plastic/metal? The funny thing is that it seems the only way to get rid of recycling quickly, is to put in the green bins, which *do* seem to get collected, mostly on the specified date. by S4qFBxkFFg (Fri 27th Jan 2023 10:46am)

  • > Best making an appt with GP first as they might be able to do it there and then. This, ask around the local practices; many won't, but one of the doctors at my GP was an enthusiast of minor surgery and said he could take a cyst out the back of my head: local anaesthetic, cut it open, dig it out, sew up the hole (I think it only took about 15mins in total for him and a nurse) and it got sent off to make sure there was nothing nasty in it. It was a shock to see how big it was once actually out. (For anyone thinking of DIY, it's apparently tricky to get the whole thing out along with any encapsulating tissue, and they can fill up again if not completely removed.) edit: this was about 20 years ago, and the doctor was considered old-school at the time. by S4qFBxkFFg (Thu 6th Apr 2023 11:35am)

I'm guessing yes. Doesn't mean there wouldn't be a cone on his head and all the marketing associated with it, but it would feel different knowing it's officially council maintained. I await the youth of future generations regularly removing the Official Cone (which, with the advent of self-driving vehicles that have no need or regard for such things, has to be custom-made), and the resulting tutting and letters-to-The-Herald from our generation, derogatorily described as "reddit das" or "cone guards". by S4qFBxkFFg (Wed 1st Nov 2023 2:17pm)
