  • Perhaps, but the signage is still there and still valid. Complain to the council to get it changed. • I passed second time around at Anniesland just over a year ago. The various routes they do aren't terribly taxing but do give a good mix of hazards and circumstances. There are two routes that involve double mini-roundabouts, which I still hate to this day, one that has an actual Stop sign, opportunity for hill start (either up or downhill) and also some traffic priority signs in traffic calming areas. I actually did all the tricky stuff pretty well first time around, failed due to not checking blind spots properly when pulling away. Second time around I got one minor for being in the outer lane at a set of traffic lights and instructor felt I should have been in the leftmost lane. Good luck for when it comes around. I don't know how long you've been down south but there are more annoying bus gates in the city centre these days, watch out for them if you have to drive in town. PS - I recommend doing Pass Plus afterwards, and [remember they changed the law to allow learners on motorways if you're with an approved instructor](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/learner-drivers-will-be-allowed-on-motorways-from-2018) by tallbutshy (Sun 22nd Sep 2019 3:13am)

  • Cyclists can get fucked until the majority actually start following the rules of the road. I think it's probably less than 20% of the cyclists I see that stick to the rules. by tallbutshy (Tue 1st Oct 2019 7:09pm)
  • > bike in the city centre > > they will just try to aggressively overtake With the speed that traffic goes, you should be the one overtaking in the city centre. ;) > I dont stick to the road rules as bicyclist Then stay off the roads, I don't care if I'm driving, cycling or walking, I don't want anyone like that within 1/2 a mile of me. Can't remember what year it was now (pre 1990 anyway), but the primary schools in my area used to do cycling proficiency tests where you were taught the rules of the road and how to stay safe. I used to cycle about the place all the time until some asshat stole my bike, only ever had one incident and that was someone opening their door when parked. by tallbutshy (Tue 1st Oct 2019 10:40pm)

  • >all cyclists are arseholes who deserve to die" Not my view, but I have heard it expressed by others. As for driver vs cyclist behaviour, I'd say that over 2/3 of cyclists I see regularly skip through lights (and often ride across pedestrian crossings to try and justify it) but a lot less drivers deliberately going through a red light. Plus all those arseholes who ride on pavements as well, not just kids, grown ass adults. Last night, for example, the light was red, green man showing, I was 2/3 across the road and someone on a bike zips through at 15-20mph in front of me. Fuck that, they had plenty of time to safely slow down, there wasn't any traffic immediately behind them, no excuse. If only that was actually a rare occurrence. So, no, I do not wish death on any cyclists (even that asshole last night) but I think I am entirely justified in treating every cyclist as a potential major road hazard and annoyance, whether I'm on foot or in my car. by tallbutshy (Mon 7th Oct 2019 2:49pm)
  • > the momentary annoyance of a cyclist going past (and I will freely admit it's annoying as a pedestrian) and almost getting maimed/killed OK, so I didn't paint the most detailed picture possible. Passed within 2 feet of me at over 15mph. Enough to be startling and in the dangerous category. > It's ridiculous to claim cyclists are a "major road hazard" Not really. I think of it like the hazard perception section of the driving theory test. As soon as I see one, my alertness leaps up a notch because I know that many will take chances at lights, going between lanes of traffic or other unsafe things. It is entirely reasonable. >a substantial number of them (even the adults) will be cycling on the pavement because they don't feel safe on the roads Started riding a bike at age 5. Started cycling on the road age 8 or 9. Cycling proficiency lessons around 9 or 10. Only stopped riding a bike at 37 because someone nicked it and couldn't afford a new one at the time. Not once did I avoid a road because I didn't feel safe. And that includes riding to work in the city centre at rush hour. Still didn't jump the lights, cycle the wrong way along one-way streets, cut across pavements. It can be done, so stop defending people who do it wrong. by tallbutshy (Mon 7th Oct 2019 5:59pm)
  • The pedestrian parts of Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street were adopted as shared use "core paths" but the signage still says it is for pedestrians only. Road signs trump council policy so feel free to give anyone cycling there the old spanish archer. by tallbutshy (Mon 7th Oct 2019 7:25pm)

Normal private landlords aren't allowed to set tenancy lengths since 2017. • >Widened footway Unnecessary. Finish up the roadworks that are impeding both pedestrians and vehicles and there's enough room for everyone, even during West End Festival or Xmas/New Year. >Protected bike lanes I don't see anywhere near enough people cycling to justify it. Very few people working or attending uni persevere after their first stolen bike. Don't expect any physical protection for any bike lanes, GCC PDFs show buses stopping on the cycle paths. >Fewer parking bays, more disabled ones I would limit parking to 30-60 mins on Byres Road itself, most of the side streets are residents only parking as it is. Businesses are pushing back hard on this one. >Dedicated left turn on the junction with GWR removed Terrible idea, it's good for vehicles and cyclists can also scoot into the bus lane on GWR. >Byres Road and Church Street both to be made one-way south of their junction (guessing Byres North, Church South) So, reduce traffic flow along Dumbarton Road some more to allow for right turn filter light? Terrible idea that slows goods vechiles & buses >New daytime only taxi rank on Church Street Stupid location. People want taxis either next to the subway or up around GWR. >20MPH limit for Byres Road and Highburgh Road To be honest, this would only really make a difference after 7PM because traffic seldom reaches that speed on Byres Road. I've lived in the area for 18 years and this seems like a massive waste of time and money. But that's to be expected no matter what party makes up the majority of GCC. by tallbutshy (Sun 3rd Nov 2019 9:14pm)

  • Council tax bands are often wrong. Have you double checked it on [https://www.saa.gov.uk/search/](https://www.saa.gov.uk/search/) The valuations were outsourced to lazy cunts back in the day and sometimes they guessed at values or just seemingly ticked random boxes. If I look up the bands for flats in my street, despite all properties being the same size, they vary between A & C. If it does turn out to be D but your neighbours are all C, you can try to get it changed. Yes, there are still some dodgy areas but a lot of them have lingering reputations from the 60s-80s and are nowhere near as bad. I had to find a flat in a hurry and ended up in Maryhill 15 years ago, thought it looked like crap and was always worried about bad things happening. Not had a single problem the whole time I have lived there aside from the odd noisy neighbour. I wouldn't recommend Shawlands though, it's relatively cheap and has good transport links, but it does have a higher crime rate than surrounding areas (thankfully this is getting better) and the mobile signal is very patchy on some networks. by tallbutshy (Fri 29th Nov 2019 2:16am)

  • I'm sort of in the same boat. I came out last year and was also worried about day to day life. Like others have already said, most people in Glasgow (along with Edinburgh, Perth, Stirling, Ayr) don't really care who or what you are providing you're not a cunt. Once you realise this, it's much easier to get on with life and leave your insecurities in the closet you used to live in. I don't pass particularly and my voice certainly doesn't but nobody gives me any hassle for the most part. Going shopping? No problem, even if I need to try something on, the staff don't even raise an eyebrow. Going for a meal or drink with friends? No problem, and it does feel great when the staff say "right this way miss". Despite the scare stories and shit that goes down in America, nobody thinks you are some weirdo predator when you ask where the ladies loo is. But I do understand it is hard and the world feels like a scary place. You have my understanding and sympathy <3 If you want to start working on your voice, try that Christella VoiceUp app but do not fall into the trap of thinking that pitch is everything, it really isn't. Pacing, phrasing, intonation are all equally, if not more, important. Some other potentially useful links + r/mtf + r/transgenderUK + r/transvoice + depending on your age, r/translater + [LGBTHealth](https://www.lgbthealth.org.uk/) provide support and run events + workshops in Glasgow & Edinburgh. • It really depends on how big of a commute you would be willing to put up with. There isn't 24 hour public transport so if you're working on a late shift you'll be stuck walking, cycling or taking a taxi. If you do get a bike, be prepared to keep it indoors in case it gets stolen. I don't know where you've gotten the idea of weekly rent though. Unless it's an Airbnb or just renting a single room as a sublet, almost everywhere charges monthly. It's easy enough to get a place relatively long term, most private lets are rolling monthly contracts. Landlords/letting agents that try to insist on 6 or 12 months are behind the times (student flats and some social housing, among others, have different rules) Price wise, it varies a lot depending on area. I live in a housing association (social housing, not US style HOA) and I pay £240 for a studio flat about 40 minute walk from the centre of Glasgow. For a similar property in the city centre, you could easily be paying £1000-1400+. Water bills are included in Council Tax which is charged in different bands based on the property value. Broadband, anywhere from £25 to £70+ depending on provider and package Mobile, depends how much data you need. I pay £15 and never run out but I don't watch a lot of video on 4G. Areas to avoid. Personal opinions as follows. + Govanhill - it's getting better but it was a bit grim for a while + Shawlands - shit mobile signal on many networks. + Ibrox and Parkhead - football crowds are annoying by tallbutshy (Tue 4th Feb 2020 4:57am)

  • I went to Glasgow university and lived in a few places around there until 98. It was mostly fine apart from one break in. Since then, more violence, usually from youths. As for shawlands, I grew up in kings park and considered moving to shawlands about 5 years ago. Two reasons why I didn't, shit mobile signal and actual documented uptick in racially motivated crime. by tallbutshy (Wed 12th Feb 2020 6:46pm)

  • >if you can avoid using the University's accomodation, do so. It's a ripoff compared to the private rental market. I can confirm this. Also, avoid dedicated private student accommodation, they still are allowed to operate under older, less fair to tenants, rental agreements. If you rent a flat in a random building, even if sharing it with other students, you can get a more modern tenancy agreement. >PS if you do move here, take Vitamin D supplements, as we get very little natural sun. • Hope you come here, you'll probably enjoy life here in Glasgow. I went to Glasgow uni but it was 24 years ago so things may have changed. >If I wanted to pursue something like a pathway to becoming a doctor, could I do that with a degree that isn't medicine Like others have said, if you want medicine, apply for medicine. Also, medical degrees are more expensive and often longer than other courses. >how does the Uni prepare students for the real world following college with this degree (like, internships) I don't have experience of that department, but I know that Computing & Engineering used to arrange intern placements. There was also the option of having a sandwich degree where your 4 year course was extended to 5 with either a year or two separate six month periods at a placement. >Are there any hidden fees, other than housing If you're renting a flat, usually they only give you the per month rate. On top of that there is council tax to pay. If you're renting by yourself or sharing the property with students, you can apply for exemption/reduction. But this is not automatic, you have to do it online or at the council offices. Also, as someone else suggested do NOT rent from the university if possible, they overcharge a lot. >I know the teaching can be really dry, but I would like to know what I should expect, and what I would be getting myself into so I can be prepared if I choose to attend, in terms of studies, social life, life for American students. Study wise, I don't know what you're used to. You're expected to motivate yourself though. If you sailed through school effortlessly before, you might find the workload surprising. I know I did. Social life, there's drinking, sports, drinking, university societies, drinking, history, interesting architecture, many museums are free, drinking, lots of nature within a short journey, a variety of nightclubs, drinking and if you're into it, drugs. >How is the schools reputation in the community and elsewhere? Glasgow uni is well regarded in academia. Unless you're involved in one of the university sports teams, there's not really any rivalry these days between the other universities in the city, or even Scotland as a whole. (Glasgow Caledonian is still a jumped up little polytechnic though /s) The locals have no problem with students unless they're being a loud drunken arsehole in public. by tallbutshy (Sun 1st Mar 2020 11:25am)

Ingress is made by the same people but has a more adult playerbase. Both teams have their own social get togethers as well as cross team events. Plus both teams always love hill walkers to capture out of the way points. I've been to a couple of the really large events, last one was in amsterdam, and they're a blast. • Was the advert from Ahuja Holdings? If so, there's a few results on Google suggesting they are dodgy. Yeah, his main business is buying & selling properties quickly but the company FAQ says all the properties have tenants. So even if everything went perfectly initially, you might end up having a new landlord soon who might not want to continue your tenancy agreement beyond the legal minimum required. One of the flats I stayed in back in the 90s deliberately had a fake name on the electoral roll though. • My SO plays a couple of geo-location games and has been all over G12 (And the rest of the West End) without having any issues at all on BT Mobile and almost as good signal on Vodafone. We can usually get 4G+ in most areas of Glasgow on BT. If you plan on getting fixed line broadband as well from BT, they rebranded Infinity to Halo. Halo includes connectivity guarantees where they give you a MiFi to tide you over if connection dies. Not sure if they'd ship one out pre-activation but if you're going with them, might be worth asking. I also save a fiver per month per sim for having broadband too. by tallbutshy (Mon 11th May 2020 4:53am)
  • One of the differences between private student accommodation and a normal private flat is rental length limits. If you rent in a dedicated student building, the landlord can dictate the minimum rental time, usually 6 months, 12 months or university term. A private rental must be a rolling monthly contract. The days of private landlords being able to insist on a 12 month minimum are over. This gives you flexibility at both ends. If you find the flat is crap or the landlord is an arse, you can move elsewhere without any problems. Alternatively, you finish your degree, like the city and land a job, you don't have to move out because you're no longer a student. by tallbutshy (Wed 20th May 2020 10:03am)

If it's not already part of the scheme where the government pay for part of the costs of getting a bike to cycle to work, it should be. ***Everyone***, not just people in motor vehicles, need to understand and follow the highway code. • >you'd like to see new cycle infrastructure in place Nowhere, if people learn how to respect the road at an early age, through programmes like the cycling proficiency classes in the 80s/90s, then there shouldn't be any problem. I certainly didn't have any issues in over 20 years cycling on the road. >Is there a road near you that's particularly intimidating to cycle on? > >Any barriers to walking or cycling you wish were removed? Nope >Any streets you wish had segregated cycle lanes Definitely not. Especially not in existing pedestrian zones. Also there are quite a few streets in the city centre that already have bus lanes & bus gates, cyclists are welcome there. Some of the suggestions people have put on the map are laughable. • >You can respect the road but you can't predict what drivers are going to do. I really don't understand why people take this view. Cyclists and pedestrians are just as, if not more, likely to be unpredictable muppets as drivers are. Sitting behind a steering wheel doesn't automatically make you more reckless and holding handlebars doesn't make you more careful. I've been hit by more cyclists than cars. 99% of the time you CAN predict what drivers are going to do because there's a set of rules and a minimum standard you have to achieve before you're allowed to drive. by tallbutshy (Sun 31st May 2020 12:26am)

  • > but it's really not something I would attempt to do myself. I can understand that. Especially if you want it under floors or holes drilled in walls. What I would say though for whatever professional you go with, ask ahead of time what type of router/switch & brand of cabling they would use and go check out reviews for both. A lot of cables do not live up to the quoted specifications and you don't want to have to deal with that after it is all installed. Pony up the extra cash for shielded cable too. Powerline adaptors are great when they work, but you'd be cursing things when they let you down. Unfortunately, if your GP is unsure enough to consult with people higher up or their legal team, they will probably be told not to engage with any private providers but especially GenderGP. This happened to me 7 months ago. > Second question, any suggestions for networking groups for either LGBT folk or musicians? Don't know about musicians, but I'll PM you some group links. [LGBTHealth](https://www.lgbthealth.org.uk/) are great and are doing as much as they can by phone, email or their FB page. As for overall acceptance and places to live, I'm honestly struggling to think of anywhere that would be particularly unaccepting. I live in Maryhill which does still have a lingering reputation as being a shithole but nobody has given me any shit here. There are a few other trans or GNC people living in my area too. I've met trans people from many different areas of the city, even other places that have shit reputations. The most hassle I have had was from a drunken arse in a pub in Shawlands but his friends made him sit down pretty quickly. No problems with any shops or businesses I've interacted with in Glasgow or any other part of Scotland. Even a petrol station in the middle of nowhere, the chap was nice and didn't hesitate over saying "Miss" The only other thing I would suggest is do your homework on landlords & letting agents as there are a few dodgy buggers about. Tenancy agreements are different to those in England, especially regarding minimum rental terms & evictions - [Shelter - tenancy agreements](https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_topics/renting_rights/about_your_tenancy_rights/tenancy_agreements). by tallbutshy (Thu 25th Jun 2020 3:59am)
  • Weirdly, GPs are not obligated to write prescriptions for any purpose. If they feel uncomfortable with either the use of or the monitoring required for medications, they are permitted to refuse. The GP or CCG can also refuse based on the cost of medication. Can't find the link right now but I remember reading about a case where a cancer clinic passed a prescription request to a GP and they refused to sign off on it. One wall and a big of an overhand from the roof isn't enough, it has to be 3 walls or 2 walls + roof. The only time I've seen anyone try and enforce the smoke-free thing was at the Beatson. I’m not the most masculine man, but when someone gives you a name like John (and spells it out J-O-H-N so you don’t mistake it somehow) and has short hair on top of that why would you insist on calling them she/her/madam? especially when I corrected them multiple times during their visit? That officer was being a complete twat. If you've lived in the same place both before and after you changed your name, or there's any direct tie back to somewhere you lived with a previous name, contact Police Scotland through their website and tell them to update your details on the STORM system. I had to call the police a while back , didn't say who I was but they addressed me by my old name. They got back to me within an hour after I emailed them saying that it had been updated. Sure enough, next time I had reason to call them, they used the correct name + title, plus the officers attending were perfectly respectful despite me not really passing well. by tallbutshy (Tue 28th Jul 2020 3:31am)

Some of Sky's services have become a bit over-subscribed since acquiring some other providers and they are one of the worst if you ever want to replace your modem/router with a better third party one. • Just register with a local GP, explain you've had tests for this in another country and request a hormone blood test. If the results show your testosterone is under 9 nmol/L then they should refer you to an endocrinologist and they'll sort out some sort of TRT, probably some variety of testogel. If you asked for referral to the ED clinic, you'd be waiting 15-18 months but if you need a little blue helper meantime then you can get Viagra, or similar, without prescription at many pharmacies. • The dealer in St Vincent Place either doesn't know the market value of items and make up prices as he goes or he is trying to squeeze profits even harder than the pawn shop I worked in. The one in Partick, if it was a piece that they made themselves, we could never figure out if the ratios were off because of them or because the donor pieces weren't up to standard but over half of them failed acid testing. We had do do the acid tests because they hadn't sent them to be hallmarked. by tallbutshy (Mon 29th Mar 2021 11:25am)

  • Dunno about Deliveroo or Uber Ests but Just Eat doesn't seem to require current hygiene certificates. It does list their status if they have one or a pending one but you see some places without any entry. Also, there needs to be some mechanism where those certificates are updated on 3rd party ordering sites. Right now it seems the restaurant have to do it themselves. by tallbutshy (Tue 30th Mar 2021 6:45pm)

I was sitting in Glasgow Green with some friends and six lads came thundering past, one running right though the middle of where we were. A much larger group appeared from behind some bushes in pursuit, shouting abuse. It seems the first group had attacked someone, six on one, and the second group chased them off. Brace yourself for a whole new shower of shit. They have bought some fully electric buses. Slower, smaller and lower battery capacity than the models bought by competitors. Soft speed limit of 44mph and if they ever let it drop below 20% charge, they are told to chuck everyone off and limp to the depot or else wait to be towed. Given the amount of buses that have purchased, they can't actually put them all on charge at once. They're going to need another couple of supply lines, if not a whole new substation all to themselves. This new fleet will have cost quite a bit so even if they were subsided, get ready for more price hikes. I know I said it above but it bears repeating. 44mph… and some routes go along national speed limit roads or motorways. Management there are a shower of twats by tallbutshy (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:34am)

  • >So I've been living in Glasgow for the last 2 years and my broadband connection has been horrendous over with constant drops during off peak hours Switching providers might not help this if you're still using the BT copper, it depends on why you're having drops. You might want to try a [Quiet Line Check](http://help.sitgroup.co.uk/support/solutions/articles/35000088353-perform-a-quiet-line-test) and see if there's a noticeable difference during times when your connection is having issues. If there is a problem, then you need to get your provider to refer the fault to OpenReach. To avoid BT lines, Hyperoptic and Virgin are the only choice in most locations. With Virgin, you have to be in an area where they provide cable TV (whether you choose to get it or not) to use their dedicated lines because they also offer VDSL over BT lines. by tallbutshy (Thu 3rd Feb 2022 5:36pm)

  • You've been in Glasgow less than a year, yes? If you're looking to do that sort of thing outdoors, walk a bit further to Kelvingrove Park, preferably away from the skate park or any of the play areas. You will probably be bothered less and not have people think you're being weird. Even at the furthest point on that grass area, you were still less than 100m from a school. I know that in an ideal society, you shouldn't have to think of such things but it's how it is. Unless you have kids with you, don't hang around playparks or near schools. Along the Kelvin you've got some paths that are quite narrow, people who don't keep their dogs under control and the risk of random folk being pricks in close quarters. The park itself is a little better but you do meet some odd folk there in the dark. The road is relatively flat, the lanes are a reasonable width and it is well lit. The only junction where you have to take more care than normal is eastbound at Park Road, where drivers sometimes change to the left lane without taking proper care. by tallbutshy (Mon 2nd Oct 2023 12:01pm)

They are supposed to ignore stops and drive past people until they are below max passenger load. As well as inspectors, they have to worry about other passengers reporting them for being overloaded. Bus drivers also sometimes are instructed to ignore stops by the control office for a variety of reasons. If there's been an incident or spillage on the bus, they're supposed to proceed to the depot but some drivers will keep passengers already on the bus and let them off at stops on the way to the depot. If you think the driver is just being a fanny and you're wanting to place a complaint, ideally you want the exact date, time, location, stop number (if available), the registration plate and if you can see the bus ID number. by tallbutshy (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 2:27pm)

This started around four or five years ago, I was also refused shared care More recently, there have been documents originating at a higher level in the NHS suggesting that this is now being made a UK wide policy. It's a mix of cost-cutting, reducing GP's workload and liability and, paraphrasing their words, "to avoid the NHS becoming a two tier system".
