  • Hi, thanks for the responses.. Apologies if I wasn’t clear enough, ideally I’d be looking for somewhere that separated kids & adults but ran both groups at the same time. I did try a parent/child boxing class at Kynoch’s Gym and while it was good fun to do something with them I’d rather just be able to get a workout at the same time and let them learn on their own. Thanks again by Galstar82 (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 1:12pm)

  • The British/Americans redesigned the majority of Hamburg after they flattened it during WW2, I always felt it was a bit of a strange place because of that. Not sure if it quite feels British but it doesn’t feel really German by Galstar82 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 12:21am)
  • I honestly think it’s a bit of a myth. Even house prices like for like are broadly comparable now. The difference is that there are far more middle/upper class areas in Edinburgh which takes the average up. But a flat in Kelvinside is about the same as Bruntsfield/Morningside which are comparable areas. As for things like drink prices, if you stay out the tourist traps again they’re much of a muchness. by Galstar82 (Fri 5th Nov 2021 5:40pm)
  • That’s weird I was just commenting at the same time that it would be a non-harassment order. Too many inconsistencies in that story to be comfortable ruining someone’s life over. by Galstar82 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 1:13am)
  • This post is a bit concerning to be honest. From what I can gather someone who was in possession of a Non-Harassment Order basically went to this person’s workplace and demanded he was removed. That isn’t the way they work, these orders prevent the offender from approaching the victim. If the victim knows the offender works in Asda for example they couldn’t just turn up there and tell him to leave. I would also say that the whole story is far from clear, domestic violence cases are absolutely horrible and difficult to prosecute. The emotions and hurt they cause also often clouds people’s judgement and affects their behaviour after it. We don’t really have any evidence that this conviction matches the story, plus if it does then the judge did not deem him enough of a danger to the public to justify sending him to prison. This post has now however put him in danger of mob justice, many people have pointed out that he is in a room full of drunk people. How soon do you think it will be before some drunk wannabe hard man attacks the photographer because he’s heard he’s a ‘beast’? I wouldn’t have wanted that on my conscience which is why this post shouldn’t have been made. I am in no way condoning this alleged behaviour at all, but to most of us it is hearsay and we have no way of knowing the truth. Even convictions rarely tell the full story. I wouldn’t be comfortable with ruining someone’s life (these allegations will stick) based on a hearsay post on Reddit. If you are then I’d urge you to reconsider by Galstar82 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 1:10am)
  • Hi, We looked at the same house, don’t know your circumstances obviously but we have kids and we’re told that the primary schools they would be in catchment for are massively over subscribed. Apparently there are children around there being sent to Schools in Barrhead and most of the newer build in NM will be the same. Nothing wrong with Barrhead incidentally but houses are cheaper there if schools are your driver. Might not be the reason why people are moving, it’s also close enough to the M77 to get motorway noise/pollution but thought it was worth mentioning. We were close to putting in a bid on a house in Bearsden too, until we went to see it last Saturday and realised it’s right under a low level flight path. It’s a nightmare finding a new house just now.. Good luck!! by Galstar82 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 1:26am)
  • I would agree with that to be honest, and some of the behaviour on this forum is ridiculous. People have pleaded for him to be identified and will no doubt go on to spread rumours about him, and that’s what these are, rumours. If this guy is harmed (or harms himself, as let’s face it being branded and targeted like this is enough to drive people to suicide) then every person who doxed him is culpable for it. Again, I’m in no way condoning the alleged behaviour but we have a legal system for a reason. Some of the reasons are to avoid mob justice and manage offenders in the community to change their behaviour. From what I can see he’s complied with the order, it wasn’t him that approached the alleged victim. It’s not up to the public to decide he needs further ostracism or punishment. by Galstar82 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 9:39am)
  • Reminds me of the killer clowns in transit van story. Mass hysteria. Logically why would you risk spiking someone with a syringe given how much easier it would be to put it in a drink. by Galstar82 (Sat 13th Nov 2021 9:35pm)
  • Totally, I grew up not far from there so know that always went on but trying to include Baillieston and Bellshill now is just mad. Uddingston is a tiny village and now apparently spans 3 council areas. Plus ironically half the people from Uddingston claim to be from Bothwell, the grass is always greener.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 12:08am)

  • Understand that, but postcode doesn’t mean it’s the same area. It’s like the ML1 postcode has lots of periphery villages to Motherwell, but they still aren’t Motherwell. Uddingston as a whole is in South Lanarkshire, Baillieston is in Glasgow. It’s just a marketing trick because a certain type of person doesn’t want to admit they live in the East-End. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 8:31am)
  • It’s madness, another one I’ve seen are new builds in Blantyre claiming West Hamilton or Bothwell. There was also one of the stand alone houses beside the truck depos on Bellshill Rd a while ago claiming it was a detached house in Bothwell. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 9:54am)

  • Uddingston is all in South Lanarkshire so you’re right by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 10:53am)
  • Yeah Uddingston is a village in South Lanarkshire, over the years Viewpark/Birkenshaw/Tannochside started to use Uddingston because they share a postcode and Uddingston was considered more prestigious. At least they’re close though. But to claim Bellshill, Fallside and Baillieston is stretching it a bit. Someone else on the forum called it perfectly, they said that when people called NLC where they worked saying they were from Uddingston they were told they called the wrong council area until they admitted they were from Viewpark. To be honest I don’t see the point in it, fair enough the older houses in Uddingston are seen as quite prestigious but a lot of Tannochside is nicer than a lot of Uddingston. If people want to pretend they live there for whatever reason it’s up to them. I just don’t think estate agents should get away with lying about it. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 10:53am)
  • That’s a cracker!! Has Merchant City taken over the Calton as well?.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 11:15am)
  • Still think that’s strange, understand they’re both close together but Viewpark is much bigger than Uddy so if anything you would have thought Viewpark would have enveloped Uddingston instead of the other way about. Plus Viewpark has quite a proud history so really unsure why people seem determined to associate it with Uddingston for any other reason than they think it’s prestigious. Think the fact it’s different council areas and there’s a Motorway in between them might have given the game away but hey ho.. Think Royal Mail have a lot to answer for with the postcodes, it allows estate agents plausible deniability as it has the same postcode as Uddingston. But with that logic Bathgate (EH) could claim to be Edinburgh and Arrochar (G) could claim Glasgow. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 11:23am)
  • So are the new houses in South Lanarkshire or Glasgow? by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 11:25am)
  • Is it the Calderpark ones you’re talking about because they’re definitely Glasgow.? Like Calderpark Terrace and Carronhall Drive? Not meaning to be a dick so please don’t take this the wrong way but that’s where I was originally looking at a house so I had to check it out. The School Catchments are Bannerman in Baillieston and St Andrew’s in Cranhill and Council Tax is paid to GCC. It was actually they houses that pee’d me off enough to write this. People will pay a premium fir those houses thinking their kids will go to Holy Cross School in Hamilton but they end up in a school with a much worse reputation. It’s not to denigrate kids that go there, I went to a much worse school than that myself but just think it’s a bit underhand when the houses are clearly in Broomhouse and not Uddingston. Understand about the postcode sharing but that’s just for Royal Mail logistics, means nothing about the area otherwise Arrochar would be in Glasgow too. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 11:41am)
  • That’s pretty much happened, saw flats in Govanhill advertised as both Shawlands and Strathbungo… Bet the home insurance doesn’t think so.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 11:47am)
  • Yes it will because of the postcode sharing but it’s not in South Lanarkshire so can’t be in Uddingston, all that means is what batch the letters get sorted in. That’s the South Lanarkshire Council Boundary here. https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/download/downloads/id/1005/map_ward_16_-_bothwell_and_uddingston.pdf Anything north is NLC and West is GCC, neither is Uddingston I’m afraid.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 12:10pm)
  • Dude to be fair you’re basing the location of a town on a taxi system. Postcodes do not define boundaries, it’s a depot code for deliveries. The area you’re talking about is not in South Lanarkshire, Glasgow boundaries, Glasgow Council Tax, Glasgow Schools. I don’t have an issue with the east end either, I grew up in a much worse area than Baillieston. But some people do have an issue with it and like to pretend they stay elsewhere. That does t really bother me, find it a bit sad but it doesn’t bother me. What does bother me is that some people will be conned into paying a premium for a house because they think their schools, council, doctors will be in South Lanarkshire when they won’t. Look at the price difference between that and the new houses at the other side on Baillieston, there’s a big gap but the areas are no better, school catchment areas are the same etc.. It’s just pulling the wool over people’s eyes. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 12:56pm)
  • Look, if you type an address in Holytown or Carfin into a SatNav it’ll tell you it’s Motherwell because it’s an ML1 Postcode. That’s the way it works, it’s a navigation machine it’s not interested in Local Government or Town Boundaries. Postcodes are decided on the proximity to a sorting office and resource available at each centre. Which is why half of Argyle is PA (Paisley) and half G (Glasgow) Cumbernauld is a G postcode, think we would at least agree it’s not in Glasgow but SatNavs may say differently. People in your family’s position are exactly what I was highlighting with this post. They believe they live in one area when actually they don’t. As for caring? If they’re happy and aware or unaware of it then good for them. It really won’t affect most people on a day to day basis. But where it would affect people is things like paying an unjustified premium for a house and thinking you get to send your kids to better schools then realising actually that’s not the case. Sorry if it sounds elitist but if parents had the choice to send their kids to schools in better areas then the overwhelming majority will. Young families may want to put their kids into a south Lanarkshire nursery, but the council won’t fund it because they don’t live there. By the way I actually do live in Baillieston and grew up on the NLC/Glasgow Boundary so I’ve got a fairly good grasp of areas around there. Bottom line is if you don’t live in South Lanarkshire you don’t live in Uddingston If your MSP is not Stephanie Callaghan you don’t live in Uddingston If your MP is not Angela Crawley you don’t live in Uddingston That’s just fact by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 1:34pm)
  • To be honest with Tannochside and Calderbraes it’s much of a muchness, it might not strictly be in Uddingston Town but most of your amenities, pubs, schools will be in Uddingston. Plus as far as I know the non-denominational kids still attend Uddy Grammar, but the RC kids would go to Bellshill instead of Holy Cross in Hamilton as they would if they lived in Uddingston proper. But apart from that there would be no impact at all for most people, arguably living in NLC means cheaper house prices/council tax which are a bonus in my book. It was more areas like Baillieston at Calderpark being classed as Uddingston that I was talking about. The reason being that families will pay a premium for a house there then realise they’re in a school catchment for Cranhill and South Lanarkshire won’t fund any nursery places that they might expect to get. Just think it’s a pretty shitty thing to do to people. Ironically I’ve also saw a few houses that are in Uddingston claiming to be in Bothwell.., never stops!! by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 2:09pm)
  • That is a fact by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 2:25pm)
  • I know mate it’s laughable, that’s what I said to someone earlier that arguably bits of Tannochside/Baillieston are nicer than bits of Uddingston anyway. But it’s not about that really, it’s trying to associate themselves with the red sandstone brigade that’s important to them. They would be looked down upon by them in the same way whether the lived in Tannochside, Uddingston or Bellshill anyway.. Makes no difference!! by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 2:46pm)
  • Totally get that, it’s much of a muchness with Tannochside. Day to Day there’s no difference at all. It was the Calderpark ones that pee’d me off, they’re being sold as Uddy because of the postcode. All well and good until people find out they’re kids are going to school in Cranhill, not that there’s anything wrong with that but they’re being sold something on a false pretence One poster here tried to claim that the new houses at Broomhouse were South Lanarkshire so therefore part of Uddingston. Despite paying council tax to Glasgow.. Strange that! by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 3:09pm)
  • Haha, you can hear the announcements from Baillieston station from half the houses there.. Was gonna say I really don’t know why people do it but I do know, I just find it a bit sad by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 3:20pm)
  • I injured my back so I’m out of all contact sports for years so I was looking into non contact options.. If I remember right there was 2 clubs training in Glasgow Green, one was called the Chickens and can’t remember the other ones. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 4:29pm)

  • Plus it’s mostly mixed teams so assume they’d be quite lgbt friendly by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 4:30pm)
  • That’s one of the situations I mean, it’s not victimless. There’s nothing wrong with living in Bridgeton but to sell the merchant city to someone from outside the area who would get a sharp shock when flute bands are the only street entertainment they would see is just wrong. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 7:31pm)
  • That’s horrible man, I’ve stayed places like that myself.. Was sandwiched in a flat in London one time between Nigerian Gangsters and a flat full of 23 Crackheads, it affects your health badly. That’s the thing though, estate agents lying about this stuff isn’t victimless.. You move to a new city with no local knowledge, see an advert for a flat in Area A, research Area A and find out it’s great, then move in and find Area A is a mile and a half down the road and area B is dodgy as f*ck!! The Southside’s class though, hope you’re enjoying it!! by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 7:48pm)
  • Rab, Rab, Rab You need to chill out a bit man.. I was interested because you were exactly one of the people who have been duped that I was talking about. It’s not your fault that your family were lied to about what area something is in. Or that you don’t have an understanding of how postcodes work. I’m sure there’s a lot of your neighbours exactly the same. No need to abuse me for pointing it out.. It’s ok to be wrong sometimes.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 8:27pm)
  • But I do though, I live in Baillieston and it’s part of Baillieston so you’re wrong on that part. It’s not me that needs to build a bridge to get over anything, it’s not me that’s in the wrong. Your folks clearly don’t know better than me, I actually sent you a link to the South Lanarkshire Council Map. Unless your folks have the power to redraw the boundaries then how can they possibly be right? by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 8:36pm)
  • That I really don’t know, I know where the Uddingston sign is but if it is the row of sandstone houses you’re talking about them I would have assumed they were in Uddingston too… Think I’ve came across as a bit of a knob here and that wasn’t my intention, it just peed me off that estate agents are clearly trying to rebrand Baillieston and Bellshill as something else to make them more expensive… And the people that buy those houses pay the price.. by Galstar82 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 10:26pm)
  • The actual meaning of them., When you say ‘Fuck Off’. What I hear is ‘I’ve realised I’m wrong and can’t admit it so I’ve tried to cover it by giving abuse’.. It’s still in Glasgow You’re wrong by Galstar82 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 4:20pm)
  • Look man, this anger will get you nowhere really.. I’m not going to carry on with this as it’s not going to change facts. If you want to find out for yourself you could use this link. https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council One of the streets I checked out was Calderpark Avenue (G71 7RG) It is in Glasgow, not South Lanarkshire. The rest of the houses there and Broomhouse are the same. That is undisputable fact! They cannot be in both South Lanarkshire (as you said) and Glasgow at the same time. Can understand how you were mistaken with the postcode, it’s an easy assumption to make. If you read through the responses on this thread though there’s a lot of examples where the postcode doesn’t match the place. I think your anger comes from either realising that whoever bought the house has been caught out by estate agents lies and made a fool out of or that for some reason the Uddingston address was important to you, so important that you lied about it being in South Lanarkshire and now you’ve been caught out. Or you genuinely don’t even know what region your family live, which is strange. Either way you’re either wrong or lying. Your consistent abuse won’t change that. by Galstar82 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 4:58pm)
  • You’re still wrong by Galstar82 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 5:09pm)

  • You brought them into it mate.. Your justification was basically “My Dad told me it’s true so it must be” Faced with facts you then got abusive.. So I’ll spell this out.. Like you I’ll do it in capitals.. IT IS NOT MY FAULT THAT THEY HAVE BEEN CONNED TO THE EXTENT THAT THEY DON’T EVEN REALISE WHERE THEY LIVE Stop being so abusive by Galstar82 (Wed 17th Nov 2021 5:20pm)
  • Depends what you’re looking for really, some areas of North Lanarkshire are nice with amazing transport links. For commuting to Glasgow/Edinburgh you would struggle to beat it. Obviously ER and ED are considered more prestigious if that’s the driver but it’s a bit of a myth that you’ll automatically have a better lifestyle there. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 9:54am)
  • You would think so but prices there have went mental recently, there’s been 3 bed houses that are falling apart inside going for nearly £370k, which is 80-90 over the asking price.. Even some semis are going for close to £300k We’ve been looking for months but think we’ll wait until interest rates rise and prices settle.. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 9:51am)
  • Purple bricks do a set fee for £999, obviously depends on how much the property sells for if this works out better for you. Also you need to do the viewings yourself. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 9:58am)
  • Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for that, it’s a fact. Look at all the Vietnamese teenagers who get caught growing weed when they’re basically living in slavery here. I’m far from morally against weed but to pretend that it’s a friendly victimless drug at the moment is nonsense. Unless it’s legal and regulated it will be a crime driver. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 10:02am)
  • It’s a good point I think some people here are failing to make the distinction between your average hobby weed grower and those who do it on a commercial scale. From what I can see it’s uncommon for anyone with a small grow for personal use/mates to be sent to prison, especially first time. The commercial operations though are a different ball game, linked to organised crime and all the violence that entails. The Chinese/Vietnamese gangs who are massive in the weed trade are also notorious for slavery/people trafficking. If it’s an organisation like that then yes I think they do deserve jail time. Although the problem is it’s often the trafficked teenagers who can’t speak a word of English and who are found in a dodgy warehouse somewhere who get the sentence. In which case it’s not deserved. It’s a bit of a minefield really, enough to make you need a bit of weed to get your head around it… by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 10:10am)
  • That harsh, seems like a step backwards.. I was more talking about the part of North Lan on the M8 corridor though. Coatbridge specifically has express trains that take 14 mins to Queen St and about 50 to Edinburgh Waverley. It’s also located on the M8/M73 with also easy access to the M74. Would struggle to get better central belt transport links to be honest. That’s why there have been so many new estates built around Coatbridge/Bargeddie/Baillieston Motorway junction. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 11:12am)

  • True, what I wouldn’t want though is for Scotland to legalise it and it to remain illegal in England/Wales (if independence happened or drug policy was devolved to Holyrood). Scotland would become another Amsterdam, where we would have massive amounts of drug tourists coming to our main cities. Amsterdam has tried residents permits and other measures over the years but hasn’t stopped it. by Galstar82 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 11:16am)
  • Personally - I waited for over 2 hours on a delivery and eventually went up to collect and their attitude was absolutely terrible. Anecdotally I’ve heard lots of stories of just shocking customer service, long waiting times etc.. There was this story in the press a while ago which was reasonably funny to be fair https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/owner-coatbridge-restaurant-shimla-cottage-7739232.amp The thing is though they didn’t mean it to go viral, they have hundreds of reviews calling out the terrible service on trip advisor and just eat etc.. • What’s the situation with the Romanian beggars, I know there’s a perception that they’re either trafficked or they are part of a money making machine, i suspect the truth is somewhere in between? I remember a documentary that followed a gang of them back to a village in Romania and they had enviable lifestyles there.. But the ones in Glasgow I see do look extremely unhealthy and poor, do they access homeless services at all? • I’ve got a large breed puppy who still believes that everyone should pay him attention and jumps on them to let them know that. So obviously unless it’s an enclosed field he’s always on the lead. A few weeks ago I was out walking him at about 5:15am, took him to a field in between Bargeddie and Easterhouse. I’ve saw about 3 people in this field in the 5 years since I’ve been walking there (Got more than 1 dog) so thought given the time I’d let him off to practice recall. As soon as I let him of I saw a figure appear from the long grass as the dog sprinted towards it. It was an older man who was 85 if he was a day out for a morning walk complete with walking stick. I shat myself and started frantically blowing the whistle and chasing him (the dog, not the old dude), but I just got dingied.. Fortunately the old guy was sharp enough to use his walking stick to fend the slabbery monster off until I caught up with him. It just goes to show you though that you can’t be complacent about stuff like this, I had visions of my numbskull of a hound breaking a lovely old man’s hip.. by Galstar82 (Sat 20th Nov 2021 12:41am)

  • Agree with what you say, it’s easy for people to get a criminal record through situations they didn’t provoke or make one-off mistakes. The Scottish Gov recently changed the rehab of offenders act which means that where an offender doesn’t get prison time then they only need to declare the conviction for 12 months. As opposed to the 5 years that it previously was. But from a perspective of governments accepting immigrants with criminal records I think it’s understandable that they don’t, if they were to go on to commit something major then whoever let them in would be blamed for it. by Galstar82 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 5:34pm)

I’ve been a landlord for about 10 years now and I genuinely hope I’ve been a good one, to be honest I maintain the flats more than I do my own home. I’ve had a few really long term tenants and make sure everything is fixed on time. The rent we charge is to the lower end of the spectrum but to be honest I don’t really think that matters much as area dictates the price mostly. • It’s an easy argument to make and on the face of it a logical one. But would you blame the fact there’s Jewish Schools in London for continuing anti-semitism there? Also most of England and loads of other countries have Catholic/Christian Schools without the same sectarianism. I don’t mean for a second that it was your intention but the schools argument is used as a stick to victim blame with. by Galstar82 (Wed 19th Jan 2022 8:06pm)
  • No worries, genuinely thought it came from a good place. After the latest headlines with Orange sectarian marches, Rangers fans smashing Glasgow and the Famine Song March a few ‘reputable’ newspapers ran columns which basically blamed division of society on Catholic schools. Pretty much the same tactics that’s been used to justify sectarianism for many’s a century.. e.g They send their kids to a different school so my kids are justified intimidating them by mocking genocide and marching around telling them they don’t belong here, makes you wonder why separate schools came about in the first place really.. The English school system is a bit different in that school reports are published and parents apply for a place. I would be surprised if the majority of kids that go to Catholic or CofE Schools in London are even from they religions or practice regularly. Even here high performing Catholic schools in east Renfrewshire have a huge amount of non-Dom students, contrary to popular belief a lot of pupils are other religions or none. Highlands are interesting, there are some Catholic primaries at least dotted around. I remember this from a while ago https://www.inverness-courier.co.uk/news/man-holding-ulster-flag-outside-catholic-primary-school-condemned-by-social-media-users-188855/ Quite what 7 year old Inverness Schoolkids did to provoke this is beyond me but I’m fairly sure none of them were ever active IRA Volunteers. But that does show the logic of Catholic = Irish =Bad Which in Inverness is probably wrong anyway, I’d imagine as many Catholic kids would be descended from Barra or newcomers from Poland as ones that were descended from the Irish. by Galstar82 (Wed 19th Jan 2022 11:20pm)

  • Don’t mean to be the negative head here but it isn’t going to change anytime soon, the house price crash headlines are a lot of bullshit. Property purchases aren’t as dependent on the economy as other assets as they are purely driven by supply and demand, a recession might lower the number of potential buyers but there will still be enough to sustain prices at a high level. They might dip slightly but nothing like 2007 or the 90’s crash. Although there are all these headlines about interest rate rises being catastrophic we need to remember they are still at an historic low, in 2007 I had a mortgage of £70k and paid just under £500 a month, now I have a mortgage of £180 odd K and pay less than £800. Mortgages are still cheap compared to what they used to be. The only thing that would lower house prices is a massive rate increase which forces people to sell their homes/repossessions and creates a homelessness crisis. Again unlikely to happen, in my opinion interest rates will go up steadily to about 3.0%. The affordability criteria applied by banks since 2007 means that very few homes will be unable to afford this rise and the market won’t become flooded with available homes. Plus there’s not really any such thing as a generic housing market, each area has different demand. The South Side has always seen high demand and prices are far more unlikely to drop than areas outside the city like Cumbernauld etc… Coupled with the fact that there are drivers that people will always be willing to pay for, take Giffnock for example where a normal 3 bed semi is going to skin you a fair bit over £300k. This is about twice the amount of a similar house in garrowhill or mount vernon (also a cracking area) and a fair whack over neighbouring Muirend (which for all intensive purposes is the same place). Nothing to do with the areas really though but everything to do with the school catchments. The fact Giffnock is landlocked with no real room to build will sustain prices there even if there’s a dip. Compared with Newton Mearns where even though the school catchments are similar prices are lower because of the amount of new builds being built halfway to Ayr. What I would say is give yourself an amount and just stick to it, not everything goes for massive amounts over. We paid 9% over for our current house and two days before we completed it we were contacted about a previous bid where we put in 3% over, apparently 2 other people were ahead of us months earlier but didn’t get the finance so the sellers were left without a buyer and had 3 weeks to move and now we’re desperate for our bid that they initially knocked back. We didn’t take them up in it but it does happen. by Galstar82 (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 12:52am)

  • Don’t be put off by the comments here, yes you’re unlikely to be top off the list for a flat in a premium area but you’ll find a flat. The thing with Glasgow is that despite people moaning about it the railway system is fairly good so it would make sense to start looking at the peripheral towns such as Paisley, Coatbridge, Rutherglen etc.. All of the ones I’ve mentioned have trains which can get you bang in the city centre in 15-20 mins and also have landlords who are more than willing to rent to people in your situation. Good luck! by Galstar82 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 9:09pm)
  • Because of the utter failure to build adequate housing stock the market won’t crash the way people think. 2007/2008 was a freak occurrence caused by irresponsible lending which resulted in a huge number of repossessions hitting the market at the same time. That won’t happen this time due to the lending policies of the last 15 years, the fact that employment will remain high and the fact that the recession won’t be as intense. There may be a slight drop, and it won’t be uniform as some areas will drop more than others but there won’t be a flood of properties coming onto the market. by Galstar82 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 9:28pm)

You could build a cavity wall, use acoustic board and plaster to deaden it slightly but in order to be effective it would have to be done on every wall in the room. Even then the sound would travel on the ceiling or in the floor. I’ve stayed in a good few tenements and it’s just luck how good the sound insulation is, lived in one where it was that good I’d have thought next door was empty and another where I could hear my neighbour fart. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here but unless you spend tens of thousands you aren’t soundproofing a southside tenement. by Galstar82 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 11:27pm)

  • I think specifically the fact that out of a crowd which wasn’t filled with bald white men that it was only bald white men that were singled out. As I’ve said previously here, the image of the angry bald white man has largely fed the gammon stereotype especially when concerning social issues. They could easily have been described as ‘the idiots with the signs’ or ‘the crowd outside the clinic’. It’s like Tommy Robinson singling out only the Asian groomers because it plays into a stereotype. Do you honestly think if 2 of that crowd were black that the post would have highlighted that as a relevant point? by Galstar82 (Wed 24th Aug 2022 8:14pm)
  • It’s a fair question, No I don’t think it is as bad as it is overt harassment compared to implicit bias. • There are probably more Vietnamese people in Glasgow than people realise. It’s a tragedy but a lot of them were originally trafficked to the UK to work in weed farms and money laundering activities (think nail bars etc..) The Ferret done a good article about it here https://theferret.scot/concerns-raised-over-trafficked-vietnamese/ Years ago I traveled through Vietnam and can’t remember seeing much evidence of Catholicism so out of curiosity I checked how prevalent it was, according to Wikipedia only 7.6% of Vietnamese are catholic. Apparently most of the Catholics are centred around the larger urban areas. No source for this but if it’s anything like Afghanistan/Thailand/India or China then I’d imagine the people who are trafficked are more likely to come from poorer rural areas. So while there may be a Vietnamese community I wouldn’t imagine there would be a huge number of Catholics. Just a theory though so could be wrong. However if you’re looking for a diverse congregation then St Aloysius in Garnethill or St Helen’s/Mary Immaculate in the south side are good bets. Good luck!! by Galstar82 (Wed 31st Aug 2022 11:05am)

  • You make some good points but I disagree here, there may be a dip but it’s unlikely to be anywhere close to a property crash. House prices aren’t as closely linked to the economy in high demand places such as Glasgow as many people make out. In many areas it’s just a case of basic supply/demand which is why semis in Bearsden can cost 400k but same in Carntyne are 1/4-1/3 of that. The crash in 2008 was an extremely special set of circumstances where lenders hadn’t properly assessed affordability coupled with rapid and high unemployment. This led to a surge of housing supply hitting the market at the same time, which led to lower prices. Since about 2010 banks have been extremely cautious with affordability checks, there is no mass unemployment and although they seem high interest rates are still low historically. Due to this there won’t be anywhere near the amount of foreclosures as there was back then, many people are on fixed rates and the economic conditions don’t currently exist for long term interest rate rises. Simply put, in Glasgow there are enough people with the wealth/funds available to keep the market buoyant, B2L investors will also be encouraged as the interest rates will stop first time buyers so therefore the rental market will grow. The Glasgow market is also still relatively cheap considering it’s the 3rd largest city in the UK, in comparison to Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham & Others you still get a lot for your money. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 11:38am)
  • Not denying the madness is over but any price dip here will be at a minimum. Inflation was one of the factors in affordability criteria, yes it will affect some people but not enough to change the overall picture. Mortgage payments should be at most roughly around a third of income, extremely unlikely if any were approved at more than 40% of income. People will therefore be squeezed but the house in most cases will be the last thing to go, nights out, sports, holidays and cars will get dropped first. As for prices, remember the valuations aren’t a what people will pay for the property it’s what the bank think they’ll be able to claw back most of in the event of a repossession/downturn. This means that valuations are unlikely to change. Will people maybe offer less above HR? Probably in some areas but not others, your govanhill example may have some truth in it but as always the areas where there is massive demand won’t change that much. Plus if we’re honest all of Glasgow has massive demand due to the amount of accidental renters who really want their own place. Not every area crashed in 2008, areas where there were very few repossessions like Giffnock, Mearns, Bearsden & Milngavie barely even saw a dip. A lot of people will be priced out with the rate rises, that’s a fact. Unfortunately for them though a lot of people won’t be, and have the funds for deposits etc.. The Glasgow market is turning into the Edinburgh one slowly. Regarding the salary point, yes Glasgow’s overall wages are lower but the professional job salaries are consistent nationwide and there’s enough professionals to buy the meagre supply of housing. If you don’t have that kind of salary then like most other cities in the world it’ll be a case of either rent, share or move somewhere cheaper (and there’s plenty of them) in the suburbs. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 3:49pm)
  • Obv answered the other comment but just one point here. Everyone tends to use the southside because of the meteoric rise in prices as an example of this but I remember when flats in the West End started to come in at over 100k and the same arguments were made there. It’s just a gentrification process that raises prices in peripheral areas that have a lot of demand from professionals, usually accompanied by trendy cafes, clubs restaurants etc… Same as Shoreditch, Peckham, Salford (partially), Phibsborough, Leith & even Brooklyn. All working class areas that have been priced out of the ordinary persons reach. I’ve not personally seen any evidence that the southside will not follow this trend but time will tell. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 3:55pm)
  • I understand what you’re saying and it makes sense but you’re using examples based on very specific sets of circumstances. Yes it’s true people will need to revise what they can offer but that doesn’t mean that will be the case in sufficient numbers to drive prices down. Even if you take a couple with an average wage of 32k each (so 1 police, 1 nurse etc..) then they could easily borrow over 300k and still pass adapted affordability checks. Put simply there will be enough people who can buy to avoid a crash, the unemployment rate is showing no real indicators of rising (the opposite in fact) to cause a surplus in supply. Plus the people who need to spend less will just look in other areas that they can afford. Really disagree with people not sacrificing lifestyle to save their homes, people, especially families will save their home above all else. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 7:22pm)
  • So they would take home roughly about 4.3k a months and the mortgage would be 1.5k(ish) based on 3.5% Assuming essential expenses and food are 1k a month, council tax £200 and for talking sake £400 for power then they are still left with a £1000 per month cushion. Which is where the stress testing comes into play. They could take a 3% rise and still have 4-500 left over. It’s very affordable for them, plus you’re assuming a 2 car household, the likelihood is one car can be removed. Trust me very few people will choose a car or restaurants over their house. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 9:04pm)

  • That’s where the thousand pounds a month would go. You seem convinced everyone is heading for disaster but I think in reality the only people that will face disaster are those who have bitten off too much, that number will be thankfully few. Plus to be honest without sounding cruel if anyone has really maxed their budget out on the basis of thinking the economy couldn’t change or interest rates can’t rise then it’s their own fault, as harsh as that sounds. People didn’t need to spend £300k on a flat in Pollokshields/shawlands when they could have spent half of that on a house 10 mins away in Rutherglen. by Galstar82 (Wed 28th Sep 2022 11:12pm)

  • Why Mearns though, there’s 2 towns inbetween no? by Galstar82 (Fri 30th Sep 2022 7:08pm)
  • I grew up in Coatbridge too so get your point here, always found it funny when I went to Uni in Glasgow when people thought I lived halfway to Edinburgh and in reality I could wake up, get ready and be in the city centre in 40 mins (17 min express from sunnyside) Takes longer to travel in from Shawlands. Think because there was originally a large gap between Glasgow and Coatbridge that mentally people think it’s totally separate, especially before easterhouse, barlanark were built. Now though with all the new estates there’s absolutely nothing between them, I lived in Baillieston for a while and my kids school catchment was still in Coatbridge. The thing with the place now is that it seems like two societies there, you get the richer folk living in the new estates and spend most of their lives in Glasgow and Edinburgh then the people who actually live in the town and spend their time there. Plus there’s a unique subculture there that’s looked down upon, again probably through implicit sectarianism if I’m honest. by Galstar82 (Fri 30th Sep 2022 7:17pm)

The police tend to do feck all in these situations, My wife reported a car once that nearly fishtailed her on the M8 beside the royal while driving about 110. In the same position as you where I fancy a crack at software engineering and also investigated both the masters and bootcamp route. Spoke to lots of people about it and the general gist of the advice I got was if you have experience relative to the industry (in my case I’ve worked as a BA/PM/PO and various other things) then a bootcamp and building up a portfolio is the way to go, but if you’re coming from something totally different then a masters is probably best(although still build a portfolio). To be honest though I checked out a few bootcamps and the only ones that impressed me were Codeclan and Makers, probably would go with them if I ever make the jump. by Galstar82 (Sat 8th Oct 2022 9:10pm)
  • This is really subjective and depends on lifestyle/assets as this is the main driver here. I work with a lot of people, many of whom are junior to me who send their kids to private schools in Glasgow and piss off skiing every winter etc.. Despite earning more/the same there is no way in hell I could ever do that. It’s all down to the fact that they have paid off any mortgage they’ve had (if they had one at all) and inherited or were gifted money. Whereas people like me who don’t come from that background have to get into major debt to get where they are. Things like mortgages, car loans and student loans make it harder to achieve a good lifestyle for working people. To be honest if you never had a mortgage/rent or student loans it wouldn’t just help your income now, it helps you build up more assets/investments quickly and so the cycle continues. by Galstar82 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 7:38pm)

  • Hamilton has a lot of deprivation and problems, it amazes me that it is considered one of the better Lanarkshire towns to be honest. Has some nice parts but for every chatelherault there’s a Burnbank or a Hillhouse. Think it’s just because the old part of the town centre and surrounds are nicer looking than the towns that surround it (Motherwell, wishaw, Blantyre etc..). Can’t comment on racism apart to say I’ve not seen any more or less than any other Lanarkshire town, these attitudes tend to go hand in hand with deprivation though (at least in public). But I know a lot of people who have bought houses in Lanarkshire as you get more for your money and end up in nice new estates with good road links then when their kids go to school reality bites that they’re in areas with lots of problems and feel like outsiders. Suppose that’s the trade off though, Lanarkshire will never be an east Renfrewshire, east Dunbartonshire, Dunblane or Hyndland as it’s impossible to live there in the king of safe middle class bubble some people want. Having said all that there’s worse places than Hamilton, you could live in Airdrie by Galstar82 (Sun 13th Nov 2022 1:41am)
  • On another note I always find it funny when some people talk about the mix of cultures here (don’t mean you), living in London when my kids were younger there was 4 other white British/Irish kids in my girl’s class of 28. When we moved back here to EK firstly her teacher told us it would feel familiar to her as they had in her words ‘a healthy mix of backgrounds’, in reality there were 3 P3 classes and had in total 1 Black Kid and 2 Asian ones. From the teacher’s experience and though that was a mix, just found it quite interesting how different people’s perception is. by Galstar82 (Sun 13th Nov 2022 1:50am)
  • Think what we’ve started to see is that some areas are dipping more than others. During the start of the year I sold a flat I had since 2007 when I was young and stupid enough to get caught in the last property bubble. Note to be clear this flat is in a shithole, pains me to say it but there are no redeeming features about this place. Jakies have an outside gathering areas with oil drums for fires in the garden ffs. It went for 18% over Home report and want the only one in the street about that time. Been keeping an eye out because I’m a nosy fecker and recently there’s been two flats in the same street reduced and looking like they’re selling for about 10k less. But on the other end of the scale my neighbour just sold her 3 bed house (not giving location for obvious reasons but is one of the ‘good school nice’ areas populated by mumsnetters and people who were born to be accountants’ for exactly 25% over home report. So some areas will hold their value/excess because of demand and others have came back down to Earth. by Galstar82 (Tue 15th Nov 2022 12:45am)
  • Realise this is pedantic as hell so apologies but it’s not technically in Glasgow, it’s east Renfrewshire. Only reason I’m mentioning it is that OP will get stung by boundary charges if they get a normal taxi. Easy mistake to make though as it is closer to the city centre than many parts of Glasgow and attached to Newlands. by Galstar82 (Tue 15th Nov 2022 9:10am)
  • It’s a bit bizarre, it’s Glasgow in all but name really. Apart from council tax, schools and ratio of insufferable wankers by head of population by Galstar82 (Tue 15th Nov 2022 9:56am)
  • Really? That’s a sweeping shitty statement you made there. Taxi driving is a low paid job that’s often taken up by ex-manual workers who can’t do heavy physical work anymore. Like anything you get some arseholes but most are good people doing a hard job while facing abuse, danger and being looked down upon. Saying I can’t stand ‘White’ ‘Full time’ ‘Male’ workers is not only a shit degrading thing to say it’s also as racist as f*ck! I get some dodgy opinion from the owner of my local takeaway and my boss at work just now totally lacks empathy with anyone, right now asylum seekers are a target. I just think they’re pricks though, nothing to do with their ethnicity. As if I said “I just can’t stand Pakistani Shopkeepers” Or “I just can’t stand Jewish Bankers who think they’re above everyone else” Then that would make me as much of a prick as the individuals concerned. Cars speeding up when kids are crossing the roads, double parking where it blocks peoples view, all done while on a mobile phone. Again everyone is scared to say anything for fear of being accused of racism but 95% of it is Pakistani/Scots-Pakistanis. • It’s a weird one, I spent most of my childhood in the 80s/early 90s there and there was a lot of Irish older people around then. But the town did have an Irish flavour, nothing I’d have thought was out of the ordinary as a kid but lots of Irish Dancing clubs, schools/parishes named after Ireland’s patron saints, St Patrick’s day celebrations etc… Out of 30 odd kids in my primary class I can only think of two that didn’t have an Irish surname for example. Was only after I moved elsewhere in Scotland that I realised these things didn’t happen everywhere. Nowadays there’s definitely less people who were born in Ireland but also a resurgence of Irish Culture. There’s a St Patrick’s Festival, a Comhaltas, The GAA have a development programme, Irish Heritage centre etc.. As a caveat though if you didn’t take part in any of these things and your kids went to ND schools then the only things you would probably notice are the original parade/march etc.. It’s not mandatory to drink Guinness or kick about in Celtic tops with shamrock hats on basically. So the answer to your question is that most remaining native Irish are likely to be quite old now, there is a huge population of Irish descent and lots of Irish culture there. Whether the inhabitants consider themselves Irish, Irish-Scots, Scots of Irish descent or Scottish is another question entirely though. by Galstar82 (Sun 4th Dec 2022 4:25pm)

She got a bid accepted at 12% over in Muirend but that fell through. Would appreciate any pointers? Cheers by Galstar82 (Fri 9th Dec 2022 9:41pm)
  • I know, there’s no rhyme nor reason to it just now. She was originally looking at East Ren around Giffnock/Clarkston/Netherlee but everything still seems to be going for a lot more than HR there, but to be fair that was the case even before the pandemic. Think it might be the fact she’s looking at houses and not flats, a lack of houses in the central southside areas seem to be keeping the prices up. Plus it was mad how much the flats increased in value so they take the biggest dip, guy I work with was in a flat in Cathcart for years, sold it in late 2019 for a few thousand more than he paid for it, whoever bought it sold it again in March and made £105k on it. • We should really put on a sticky for this as sound problems in tenements seems to account for a lot of posts. Without getting too technical here unless you spend 10’s of thousands of pounds (in effect building a recording studio/soundproof room inside a room) then you are not going to have any noticeable impact on the noise. High-pitched noises are easier to minimise but low-pitches like voices are much harder. I have seen people go to extreme lengths by building stud walls packed with sound insulation, covered by acoustic plaster only for the sound to travel under the floorboards or across the ceiling/external walls and come into the flat anyway. Unfortunately sound insulation wasn’t a primary concern when the tenements were being built and it is just sheer luck how effective it is. I have had a flat where despite sharing beside people who loved an all-nighter I barely heard a thing. But have also had one where I could hear my neighbour fart and snore. There are that many intricacies in the way that tenements are built which make it impossible to identify where all the sound is coming from and even more impossible to block it. Bass noise can even reverberate and travel through sandstone. You just need to get used to it or move I’m afraid, earplugs are a godsend. by Galstar82 (Tue 10th Jan 2023 5:42pm)
  • I know this is going to sound heartless but the reason that there are assessments/exams are to separate the students that can do something to those who can’t. Instead of wondering if you could get away with not doing it you should maybe be making a plan to get better at it. You’ve got a massive advantage compared to students years ago just because of the amount of resources you have access to. Any statistics topic is covered on YouTube, coursera and Udemy do tens of thousands of good quality courses for cheap. Your university provides support/tuition, your peer group could help. Everyone encounters subjects that don’t play to their strengths but part of learning is showing resilience and strategy to overcome these challenges. Once you are working you won’t be able to skip stuff you’re not good at, so try and learn how to do it now. by Galstar82 (Fri 13th Jan 2023 2:27pm)
  • These aren’t architectural gems that should be preserved. They are concrete containers to keep all the poor in one small area. It is not natural for people to stay in an environment like that. They contribute to crime, depression and generational poverty. People need space, greenery and access to resources/education if they are going to thrive and escape the poverty trap. Knock them down, smash up the rubble, burn it and dump the ash on any architect/politician still alive who was responsible for them. by Galstar82 (Fri 13th Jan 2023 2:36pm)

For instance 3 bed houses in Kings Park go for less than 2 bed tenements in Shawlands despite only being 20 mins walk away. by Galstar82 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 11:04am)

  • I’m helping my sister look in East Renfrewshire just now and we’re having a nightmare trying to find something Had an interesting conversation with an estate agent recently. He said that quite a lot of savvy people sold in the last year but rented instead of buying straight away in case there was a crash. The thinking being that if they waited they could get something in a more desirable area without the massive offers over payment. All that’s happened though is that in the desirable areas you’re back to normal demand with this pent-up demand on top of it which is still causing the massive offers over that people were trying to avoid. by Galstar82 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 5:53pm)
  • Not being a Cock here but are you from the area or spent much time here? The smell from Paterson’s landfill has been brutal this year, definitely getting worse since they extended it. One of my mates bought one of the new houses in Baillieston next to the M73 and he’s trying to sell it already because of it, a few years ago the smell never got that far. by Galstar82 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 10:13pm)
  • Good stuff. I lived in Baillieston up until a couple of years ago and I rarely smelled it at all. Can’t believe how bad it’s been this year though, have family in Mount Vernon and it’s been genuinely unbearable. There was a guy who posted here a couple of months ago (can’t remember if he worked there or not) and he said that it’s being caused by the really cold weather. Apparently it’s stopping the methane from evaporating in the atmosphere and keeping it close to ground level.. Hopefully SEPA get it sorted though as can’t continue the way it is. Good luck with the new pad 👍 by Galstar82 (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 2:49pm)

Seems Glasgow prices are pretty much unchanged. Most surrounding areas are too, east dun has went down slightly but nothing major. So far it looks like there won’t be a crash, as I thought sales have dropped but prices have remained static. Still a while to go to the 6 month mark though! by Galstar82 (Mon 20th Feb 2023 2:42pm)

  • The standard reply for areas is the south side of west end, but in reality there’s lots of areas that meet your criteria. All depends on your budget and what kind of house/flat you’re looking for. Periphery areas vary, some have quite a small town mentality, others are basically commuter towns so are more diverse. As for foreigners, may be uncomfortable but Glasgow is really the only Scottish city that could be considered diverse. Does that mean that it will be easy or everyone will be friendly? No, but it will be easier here than elsewhere. Early years/nursery teachers get paid buttons here, council jobs get a bit more but they’re hard to come by. by Galstar82 (Sat 17th Jun 2023 9:59am)

  • I’ve not seen any real anti-semitism but the truth is the Jewish community is shrinking and also mostly invisible, they also tend to mostly associate with themselves and stick to East Renfrewshire so most people don’t have any real contact with them. I’ve saw a lot of comments about people drifting from anti-Zionism to antisemitism, I’m not saying that’s never happened but there are lobbying groups in the UK who have made a concerted effort to equate criticism of Israel with criticism of Jews. This has had the desired effect of making many almost scared to criticise Israel, fortunately that doesn’t seem to apply to Glasgow. If anyone doubts the influence that pro-Israeli media has in the UK then just look at the hatchet job that Jeremy Corbyn was the victim of. That was completely driven through Israel shitting themselves that the UK under Corbyn wouldn’t stand back and put up with their shite. In summary though you’re unlikely to see antisemitism in Glasgow but if you have any strong feelings on Zionism it’s probably best to avoid the subject.. by Galstar82 (Fri 25th Aug 2023 5:44pm)

  • I totally support this in principle yet also think it’s naive to think there won’t be any unintended consequences. There are risks such as dealers knowing where their market is, other addicts knowing who/where to rob to acquire gear, over-zealous addiction workers putting people off using them, increased crime around the areas they’re situated, stigma around use etc… They are a good idea but all of these risks and more would need to be mitigated and managed to make them a success. Politically they are an open-goal as any crime which takes place near them (and they will) will be linked to the consumption rooms by the Daily Mail and their ilk, who will also run stories about how the people living near it have been affected in order to blame and tar the SNP. Might not be the magic bullet we think it is but definitely worth a shot. by Galstar82 (Wed 13th Sep 2023 2:30pm)

Over time Crosshill grew to be considered as just part of Govanhill but it is a separate area, think a lot of the street signs still have Crosshill on them. The reality of the situation is that if someone is asleep on your doorstep then they are desperate and likely not sober. Obviously you want to make sure they’re ok but it at the expense of your safety/wellbeing. Ironically calling the police on them may be the best thing you could do for them as if they’re not in contact with agencies that can help them then the police could help with that (not saying they always will, but they could). by Galstar82 (Thu 21st Sep 2023 9:44am)

I went to three different ones with an injury over the period of a year and got three different diagnoses. Hampden got it right first time and I was fine within 3 weeks with some manual work and some stretching/strengthening. The last time I went I thought it was a minor pull but they told me to get an MRI straight away as they thought it was something more serious, again they were right and I was in surgery 3 days later. But you’re right, some people are too blasé about having small kids on bikes in city centre traffic. All it takes is someone clipping you when they’re changing lanes and it’s game over for the wee one. by Galstar82 (Wed 25th Oct 2023 9:57pm)
  • They stats could easily be interpreted differently though. With the assumption the average city cyclist travels 18kmh and the average pedestrian walks 5kmh then walking is much safer. There would be one fatality for every 252’525 hours spent cycling. Yet only one fatality for every 869’565 hours spent walking. So for each hour spent travelling there is a 344% greater risk of dying on a bike. by Galstar82 (Wed 25th Oct 2023 11:54pm)

The twat in question was in the right lane going the opposite direction from me, I was also in the right lane on my side of the road. • There’s around 10’000 people in Govanhill officially, but with the sub-letting and unregistered people there it’s likely to be a lot higher. Most are fine, some are pricks of the highest order. The properties themselves, even the better ones are at risk because of generations of dodgy repairs by dodgy landlords going back hundreds of years. A boy I went to school with in the 90’s had the luck of having his bedroom collapse because a supporting wall in an upstairs flat had been knocked down to fit in more tenants. These issues aren’t confined to Govanhill but the tenants there are more likely to be vulnerable for various reasons. The comments about groups of youths/men not causing any problems are bullshit, I live close to the area, as do most of my friends/family and we’ve saw them cause problems loads of times. Lots of harassing comments, people being attacked and muggings for example. A quick Google search on Govanhill shows many of these issues, again not confined to Govanhill but there are a lot of them and remember because of the communities there is less likely to be reported. It’s also noticeably dirty, not all as rat infested as the media make out but it’s much dirtier than the areas surrounding it. The good points are proximity to the south side/shawlands and the city centre. Lots of restaurants around and if you like more exotic foods there’s no shortage there. Plus if the gentrification continues then you could make money on a flat if you’re buying, but could end up paying more if you’re renting. Think the fact is though I wouldn’t want one of my daughters staying there, wouldn’t be worried every second if they did but it would make me a bit uneasy. by Galstar82 (Wed 8th Nov 2023 5:20pm)

  • Didn’t realise there was that many of them to be honest. The area does seem to stand out just now though, there’s barely anything for sale elsewhere and the cluster of houses there. Do you think people are trying to sell because they overpaid in the first place, have seen a lot of the houses were previously sold fairly recently? We had a terrace there, was a nice area but the noise from out neighbours on one side was unbearable. They weren’t doing anything antisocial, was just general family noise, but it seemed like the walls were paper thin on one side but not the other. by Galstar82 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 9:45pm)
  • Yeah it was totally bizarre, ended up quite friendly with the couple next door and we tested it by putting music up full volume and you couldn’t hear a sound.. Only time we heard anything was when they were getting new central heating fitted.. Yet on the other side you could hear everything, genuinely felt as if they were living inside our house. We had a theory that when it was getting built they done it simultaneously at two sides, misjudged it when they joined the terrace and had to fill in with solid wall.. Had to say though I was shocked when I saw what people have been paying for them, loved living there when I was younger but people paying around a quarter of a million for a 2 bed terrace is hard to take in. by Galstar82 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 11:27pm)
  • Totally, I was helping my sister find a house in Giffnock/Clarkston over the past couple of years and the money they were going for is hard to believe. Problem was she needed one that was level for wheelchair access for my niece so that narrowed her options and they were all going for loads over HR, I know everywherehad a boom but it seemed on steroids there. Seeing semis that were normally just over 200k going for 350-400 was bizarre. Think a lot of people will be stuck in the one place for a long time. by Galstar82 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 11:32pm)
  • Weird, is he looking to buy a house there? by Galstar82 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 11:42pm)
  • That brought back memories there, I remember taking a few tumbles down the stairs of death at our front door.. by Galstar82 (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 3:34pm)
  • The highest that was confirmed by our conveyancer was 35%, hard to imaging but most houses were going for at least 20% over for a period. We were putting in about 10% over mostly and there were some properties where our bid was coming in at less than 10th place. Things are going for less now but the home reports are also higher than they were a year ago so swings and roundabouts I guess. by Galstar82 (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 3:33pm)

  • The drivers are sometimes told to skip stops if they are behind on their route and another driver is close behind. Could also be at maximum capacity where they can’t accept any more. Most drivers won’t risk their job just to avoid picking up a teenager. However you should maybe consider asking your child to stay in school for lunch, clearly you don’t live within walking distance and there is a risk of missing her classes. Would it not be better for her socially to spend her break with her friends rather that panicking about buses so she can eat a sandwich for 5 mins before leaving again..? by Galstar82 (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 3:45pm)

  • 2022. She finally got a house a few months ago at 8% over so seems the madness has calmed down. Although home reports are higher so ended up paying nearly as much anyway. by Galstar82 (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 8:35pm)
  • That’s picking someone up. You asked about dropping someone off. I already covered that in my first response. by Galstar82 (Thu 23rd Nov 2023 12:23am)

  • You’re not going to learn how to tile in 5 days. Most of these courses are predatory, they aim to get people to spend redundancy money in the hope of getting a trade. As another poster mentioned the most popular ones are plumbing/gas engineering, not mentioning that you can’t be qualified in either without a recognised apprenticeship. Tiling to be fair doesn’t require a recognised apprenticeship but it would take a long time to learn it properly. There was a place in Edinburgh that done a training course that had a good reputation but it took around 6-9 months if I remember right. by Galstar82 (Mon 27th Nov 2023 8:44pm)

  • There’s not been a ‘Hibernian Walk’ in Scotland for decades dude, not meaning to be pedantic here but it’s often used as a counterattack from the more Orange minded bigots to try and portray Catholics as also having bigoted walks.. The Ancient Order of Hibernians were an organisation only open to catholic men of Irish descent, but have not really been active here for a long time. The walks you have probably seen are likely to be Republican ones, which while still a pain in the derrière are not sectarian. by Galstar82 (Thu 30th Nov 2023 6:12pm)

  • I didn’t suggest for a second that you were an orange minded bigot, I just pointed out that you were wrong about an AOH March taking place and the reason why it was important. If anyone presented them as Hibernian Walks then they were also very wrong. CNE and the AOH would be fairly ideologically opposed on many things. by Galstar82 (Thu 30th Nov 2023 11:30pm)
  • It’s an open secret in the southside, people are afraid to say it for obvious reasons but most of the terrible drivers are from the Pakistani community. Some clearly have no license. Others zoom about at breakneck speeds in souped up Audis. Then others try to kill primary school kids while attempting to drop their own kids off three inches away from their classroom door every morning. by Galstar82 (Thu 30th Nov 2023 11:38pm)
  • Interesting, where did you find this out? by Galstar82 (Fri 1st Dec 2023 2:23pm)
  • Also interestingly upon checking the Falkirk Council website there were no Republican parades applied for between June and December this year. There were however 23 Sectarian Marches approved, all of which from loyalist orange bands. So much for your ‘rotation’ of ‘Hibernian’ walks, seems like an attempt to portray sectarianism as 2 sides of one coin when the reality is anything but. by Galstar82 (Fri 1st Dec 2023 2:30pm)
  • If it’s Falkirk Council Area you’re talking shit, it would have been on the parade notifications whether it was approved or not. The fact you used the term ‘Hibernian Walk’ shows ignorance and you made an attempt to cover for it. by Galstar82 (Fri 1st Dec 2023 4:20pm)
