  • Megabus is the cheapest. But if you book well in advance you can get cheap train or plane tickets. Maybe even look at the sleeper train. It gets you into Euston station about 7am so you get a full day and could save you paying for a hotel room for a night depending on what time of day you need to be in city Megabus is not comfortable but very cheap. I can remember going down to London when I was about 19. I got a cheap flight in the morning (but more expensive than megabus). Had that full day then stayed the night and a full day the next day. Got the megabus back overnight. I’m glad that I did it that way. The plane meant that I wasn’t stiff and sore for the stuff I was doing. But I was a bit stiff and sore after getting off the bus back in Glasgow, but that was ok as I had the day to recover without missing out on anything. It was a balance between spending a bit more on a plane (having now used the sleeper id happily do that too if it was a bed) and be nicely rested and mobile on arriving, but save more money on the way back. Someone has already said it, but remember to incorporate how much it will cost to get into the city if you go by plane when you compare your options by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 25th Jun 2021 1:39am)

  • We’ve been lucky for 12 years and not seen any (bet I see one tonight now I’ve said it). I know my upstairs neighbours saw one when doing their kitchen, and a ground floor neighbour saw one a year ago I know some in our building, including me, got some ultrasonic plug ins since the mouse was seen a year ago. Apparently they don’t like mint so I now have one in the kitchen and bathroom. If you do find a wee hole they come through, push some wire wool in it. My sister did this in London and didn’t see any again. Might be a coincidence but makes sense that it would work since the can get through tiny holes but the will should block it enough by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sun 4th Jul 2021 9:51pm)

  • Bramble is Shawlands should be good. It was in giffnock and recently moved to shawlands. I’ve not been in yet (hoping to go next week) but if it is the same menu and same chef it should be amazing. The huevos rancheros was fab and there was a vegan open sandwich that was amazing. I’m a total omnivore and these were my go tos Balbirs in the west end was always good. Again haven’t been recently since lockdown (I’m a doctor and I’ve decided to limit the amount I go out so that I have less chance of getting even just a cold and not being at work while I wait for my test results. I will probably double in weight when I make up for it later!). As with many Indian restaurants it has a good selection of vegetarian dishes. I would happily just eat their bhel poori and bhatura chana for the rest of time! Let us all know if you try a particularly good place by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 8th Jul 2021 1:33pm)
  • Fyne Shellfish on Springhill Gardens in Shawlands has its stuff directly from Loch Fyne and I found a poster online that specified they had their kippers. They’re only open Thursday to Saturday. You’ll find them on Facebook and their number is 0141 632 9964 if you want to call and check I’ve had some stuff from their before and it was great. Pretty much as fresh as you can get without being on the loch’s shores if your not buying something smoked or cured. Hope this helps by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 8th Jul 2021 1:42pm)

  • Ask for their CVs. The vast majority of private doctors also work for the nhs but there are some who don’t. The cvs should show you some info about their background and their particular experience. One may have a bit more than the other in what you need My dad did this when he was looking at getting laser eye surgery many years ago. He found it helpful Although you could ask your nhs consultant for a recommendation. It might take a while for an appointment if you want to speak to him in person. Also it might be difficult for them to recommend one if they don’t know of either, or if they are friends with either or both. In Glasgow chances are they have worked together before, may even currently work together and/ or be friends by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sat 10th Jul 2021 11:24am)
  • Call 111. Explain the problem and they can organise something. Before covid I had a wisdom tooth crack and was scratching my cheek so couldn’t open my mouth at all (could open lips to drink so wasn’t emergency). Was in aberdeen and they got me seen at the dental hospital. I’m an idiot and scared of the dentists so don’t have a registered one (religiously brush my teeth). The students were actually really great with my dental anxiety (they told me that’s the term that gets used) and got me sorted. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 16th Jul 2021 8:02pm)

  • Shawlands would work well (I live in Shawlands so I’m biased but it is a safe area IMO). There are at least 3 direct bus services that would work and run frequently (Glasgow’s got a pretty good bus and train service within the city to get you about). The numbers of the bus services would be the 3, and several of the 38s (I.e 38b and c). Look up first Glasgow buses and you can get a vague idea of the route from near the uni into Shawlands. Shawlands also has plenty of pubs and other useful places Good luck on your hunt If you have other questions, just ask. This is a good subreddit for info and people are reliable in their advice. Also if for some reason they weren’t, it would get called out very quickly by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 21st Jul 2021 8:42pm)

  • I’d second the Shawlands, pollok shields, strathbungo, pollokshaws, battlefield area. I’ve lived in Shawlands for 12 years and there are plenty of young people, good local amenities, good public transport links and pubs for if/when you’re ready to go there too. • If the kid’s 9-10years old and up screaming all day and night, plus being dropped off in the middle of the night, I would agree there is an issue with the child as you’d expect that age to not do this. I’d agree with being super nice and when you go up to talk to them about it, include asking about the couple and how they’re getting on with disturbed sleep. It’ll be less confrontational and look like you’re on their side so they might be more likely to try something. If they are stand offish it might get them chatting and you can get more info on the situation, like if this is just for the summer holidays and therefore an end is in sight! I think suggesting taking the kid out to run off some energy might work a bit for him. I don’t think there is any quick fix. Sorry by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 12:50pm)

  • Not sure about getting it done via the nhs and paying, but if it’s that you want an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to do it/ someone with reliable training, you can look into Ross Hall. My dad did this years ago (before loads of opticians/clinics offered it). He figured since it’s his eyesight that is involved he wanted all the details. He called them, found out who did the procedure, then asked for their CVs. Pretty sure most if not all of them work for the nhs too (generally the case for private practice outside London). Hope that helps by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sun 1st Aug 2021 11:35am)
  • I’d go have a look at ross hall. Each doctor works for themselves rather than ross hall and pays them a kind of rental fee for facilities rather than commission or a percentage. Also the doctors are under gmc standards which means they should be practicing in patients best interest rather than money. They won’t provide laser eye surgery if it is inappropriate and may suggest an alternative if available as a result. I feel there are more thing governing their practice than most laser clinics and they are therefore more accountable Where ever you go, do your research thoroughly as it is your eyesight involved by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sun 1st Aug 2021 12:33pm)
  • You let the letting agent/estate agent as it is them you have the deal with. Do you know how much notice you need to give? Make sure you don’t do it too late. Last time I did this I just emailed the letting agent and they were happy with that by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 6:42pm)

  • I can’t think of any resources at the moment (I too am just off a long shift) but I have seen old pictures of Shawlands (I live there too). It was shops like the greengrocers, bakers, butchers, hardware and pubs too of course. It is Scotland after all. Will get back to you if I can think if actual resources by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 4th Aug 2021 10:44pm)
  • Ok brain has kicked in. Your best bet is to look at old pictures to see what was there. There are a number of historical societies who would have archives but lots on line I’ve just found this interesting leaflet (link below hopefully) and it give some info specific to Shawlands. I didn’t know the corona bar was purpose built and has been going since the late 19th century! But there are some photos and you can see some stuff, like Linen was a the Saving Bank before https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=30235&p=0 by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 4th Aug 2021 10:57pm)
  • What do you mean by agency work? Nursing or similar? Regardless of what field I would seriously consider going to the shift. If there is any connection between the agency/someone who uses it and a potential employer and they hear you seemed unreliable in turning up it could look bad for future employment. Likewise you don’t know what the future holds and may need/want to go back to the agency at some point, even if you’re certain at the moment you never will. Finally, unless you’ve actually had the job offer in writing and you and they have signed you up, keep all your options open and goodwill on your side. You never know when you need a reference Basically: absolutely go to your shift. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 10th Aug 2021 6:57pm)
  • Don’t burn anymore bridges. Start turning it around and show them you are reliable incase you need a reference. If you finish at 4am get a few hours sleep before tomorrow’s interview. You might hear more about the job and prefer it to what you’ve been offered already. • Glasgow has good transport links so rather than a distance from Glasgow uni, you might want to give a time scale of how long you want your commute to be on what transport. Walking, fair enough, go with distance Cycling, possibly still go with distance. Be aware Glasgow is hilly so will take a bit of getting used to Car - again go with time but where are you parking as it is often easier with public transport as few parking spots Public transport - Glasgow has pretty good and extensive bus and train services within the city. Also the subway is frequent (nicknamed the clockwork orange). These methods would probably extend the distance you could live. Also, why near Glasgow uni. Are you students or working there? What are your ages? Jobs? Let us know and could probably improve the advice by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 13th Aug 2021 5:20pm)
  • If you want/ need free dental care look at Glasgow medical school. They appreciate patients. The appointments can take longer but you can often get them quickly. I used them in an emergency years ago More recently I had to use aberdeen dental school in an emergency. My wisdom tooth cracked and was scratching my cheek badly so couldn’t eat or drink without bad pain and bleeding. I hate dentists. Told the student dentist and she explained they get training in dental anxiety specifically and she was great. High level of supervision and excellent service. I had to go back the next day to get it removed as it was going to be very awkward and not simple enough that she could do it, but the student the next day was likewise great and highly supervised. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 18th Aug 2021 1:55pm)
  • As I said, it’s been years since I used Glasgow’s dental school. I just know Aberdeen’s school can be used as a regular dentist as long as you are aware appointments will take longer and will obviously be done by students. Worth checking with Glasgow dental school. I would think they still need to learn routine checks so would be surprised if they do nothing. Regardless I hope you find somewhere that works for you soon by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 18th Aug 2021 6:56pm)

  • Check your title deed and call the factors too. Where is the hatch to access it? I live in a tenement on the Southside and ours is communally owned but no one actually uses it (difficult to access as it’s a hatch in a tall ceiling and poor flooring so not exactly good for storage). But our roof is also communal and therefore any repairs are split between all of us. Don’t go ahead and convert without finding out who owns it and buying it. You’ll end up being liable for any damage, possibly need to put it back as found and be legally at risk by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 12:43pm)
  • If you drive consider living further out from Glasgow and driving in, but only if you can get a staff car park pass. Where will you be working? Depending on that, look at travelling by train so you can look further like East Kilbride (I’ve loved my entire life along that train line at various points along it and it’s very handy). Ask some of your uni friends who are working in Glasgow where they live and how they are finding the commute. Also if you’re still in contact with any nurse mentors ask them where they think would be worth looking at for the commute. Don’t set your heart on a particular area too much if you don’t currently have somewhere to stay. As others have said, sit refreshing the different websites and apps and call as soon as you see something Good luck by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 9:58pm)
  • If you’re at the royal, even if you did drive it probably would be a nightmare anyway When I was a medical student I had placements in GRI still lived at home with my parents. I then moved to Shawlands when I was working. The 38 and 57 go past GRI on castle street. They have buses that get there before 7am. Pretty sure they even have them on a Sunday too, which can be an issue with some services. Look along those routes for areas that might work. Have a look at what other buses go past it and if there are areas that are within your budget along them. I used to get on the bus, set my alarm for a bit shorter than the trip should take and then fall asleep (I’m really not a morning person). Also did it on way home after busy days. There aren’t close train stations but it’s about a 20-30 mins walk to GRI from queen street and Glasgow central. It’s annoying when it’s raining but it’s do-able and good exercise (if you have a bike ask about if it’s feasible to lock it up safely at work and that would speed up your time from station to hospital). If you’re looking for walking distance to GRI I think you’ll struggle to get anything as most stuff that don’t cost a fortune will be taken by students already If you know anyone working at the royal, ask them if they’ve seen any posters in staff rooms for flats/rooms as there are sometimes people working in hospitals advertising to let privately to fellow medical or nursing staff on the basis that we should be trustworthy! Hope this helps. Good luck Hope some of this helps by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 11:44pm)

  • Tldr; balbirs, Danny singh’s, Koolba From the description I would suggest a chasni (it’s my favourite too). It’s been years since I lived in the west end so don’t know most takeaways anymore, but I’ve looked on deliveroo and just eat to see what’s in the west end and there are a few that I know are good. Balbir’s (I would recommend having a meal in the restaurant too as you can get the banquet where they ask about allergies and able your general preferences such as meat, fish, veggie only, creamy, not-creamy, etc), Danny Singh’s (there’s one I use on the south side and it’s the same people) and Koolba (been to the restaurant in town). Chicken tikka masala doesn’t actually have a strict definition. You just tend to get similar recipes in the same area. So lots of the ones in Glasgow take always will be similar, whereas other cities will be different by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 7th Oct 2021 3:49pm)
  • Depends on your boiler. Older boilers will give you a limited amount of hot water in a tank. But newer combiboilers will give it continuously. It is apartment specific, not for the whole building. When you run out of hot water you just need to wait for more to heat up. Usually plenty for doing dishes, just wash your hair when you first get in the shower or you risk cold water for rinsing if you like long showers If you’re renting, ask about the boiler when you’re looking by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 21st Oct 2021 3:36am)
  • I wouldn’t necessarily rule out places like Shawlands. You might get something for £700-800 for a 30 min bus ride instead of a 15min bus ride which isn’t that much (When I last moved to work I used around 30 mins on a bus as my boundary. You might be ok with a bit longer or need much shorter) I am biased as I really like Shawlands but it has a lot going for it. Look along bus route that end at the hospital. I know the 34a goes through Shawlands and finishes at the QEH, and I think the 8 is one of the ones through Partick. Get the First Bus App and use that to judge routes from flats you might consider to work out how long it will take to get to work. Remember to set the time to the correct period for your travels and you’ll get a feel for it Call and arrange viewings. If you find somewhere that you like you can always ask if they’d accept a later entry date. Some will take it as they’d prefer a definite entry than waiting and hoping. Others will say no, and if you really like it and has already felt like you were going to pay more then you can decide if you’re happy to pay extra If it is at the queen elizabeth hospital then parking is a nightmare for staff without a permit and just working there doesn’t mean you get one (I’ve worked in many hospitals and I’ve heard from friends who work at that hospital that it is till problematic) so even when you get a car, public transport may be a better option at times anyway Hope this helps. • The issue might be getting to some of the distilleries. The Clydeside distillery in Glasgow is closed during COP26. Most distilleries are in the countryside. However you can find day trips which include visits. Have a look at the website below under distillery tours to see a few https://www.viator.com/en-GB/Glasgow-tours/Distillery-Tours/d740-g6-c32022 West brewery on Glasgow green is a nice place to sit and have a drink, and something to eat. Unfortunately it’s not doing tours just now The shilling brewing co in the city centres also good. Has a wide variety of beers (think they have about 16 taps), including it’s own from their brewery. They also do good stone baked pizza. However I agree that adding it as standard on smaller tables is not ok. I’ve not had much experience of it and I have asked twice to have it removed (was paying by card and prefer to give tip as cash so they got it anyway, but was not impressed and did put a bit of a damper on it as the last thing that happened on a night out for dinner) by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 10:53am)

  • Not sure about average rents at the moment as not looking but can advise about a few things to remember when working out budgets. You’ll need a deposit and that was one months rent last time I was looking to rent. Council tax might not be included in bills so check how much that will cost Work out a budget for food and what you’ll be able eat for that. Even with all of this, it’s good to have a bit of an emergency fund too if you are in the position to do so. It can be tempting to not get renters insurance to save money, but if something happens it can be very pricey without it leaving you in a very difficult position. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 11th Nov 2021 9:59pm)
  • Look for somewhere furnished then you don’t need to think about doing that and they also often come with things in the kitchen like pots, knives, cutlery too. View the place as well before accepting and read the contract through thoroughly For where you’ll live, consider transport links, especially to where you work Look on Citizen’s Advice website for advice and help. Without covid I would have said go talk to them in person too. Maybe they are doing zoom or in person meetings if you want to discuss stuff with someone about anything that comes up after you’ve looked through the website. They can help you with advice on finances, ways to increase income/budget effectively, about your rights as a renter, utilising a bank account effectively. If you can stand to stay longer, I’d have at least one extra months rent saved as well for a further back up. Have plans for if things don’t go as planned. I’m a worrier and found that I do a lot of “what if….” thinking. What helps me is to answer the what ifs. So, what if my landlord is a tool? Know my renters rights (find out from citizens advice for reliable info). What is I suddenly don’t have my job (it’s ok, I have …….. saved which I can live off for ….. while I look for a new job). That kind of thing. It is especially important to have plans if you have a toxic family as you won’t be able to go to them for help without consequences. I’m not trying to scare you. I want you in the best position possible when you leave for it to work and to not go back and to be happy. Can’t think of anything else at the moment. Good luck by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 11th Nov 2021 11:27pm)

  • If it’s a front tooth you’ll be able to get “tooth coloured” filling for the tooth on the nhs (if it’s a back tooth you can only get metallic finish on nhs). If it’s a front tooth getting filled then I’d try to get the best match as possible because even slight differences can be noticeable. • My great-uncle in Canada used to race pigeons. He had several champions. He’d drive them miles away, even hundreds of miles, and they get timed in how long it takes to get back home. He told me that at one point he had one pigeon who would get restless if he wasn’t taken for a flight every day (he had to be taken, didn’t fly off by himself), but he seemed to teach the others this too. Ever since that he’s had to take most of them at least a few miles away every day for a short flight. Even gets a friend to take the more fussy ones for a trip if my uncle is away on holiday by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 22nd Nov 2021 11:08am)

As in I get it one morning and realise they must have sent it the same day I saw them and that I’ll see them again in a few days! Serious just hand it over if you want to give me a card that much. • It is unlikely that it would cause an issue. They have exploded in a plane before because the lower pressure causes the bubbles in the filling to expand. But they’ve been on plenty of planes without exploding. The reason the RAF have specified no tunnocks teacakes is because it could go over vital equipment. You just may end up having a messy bag if it doesn’t happen. More likely to happen if bag is put into hold rather than in the cabin with you by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 30th Nov 2021 1:03pm)
  • I would either do what some people here have suggested and alter/sabotage it so might latch can’t work, or just get onto the factor to get it changed. You could always just damage it beyond repair so it has to be replaced, although that might be considered criminal damage (don’t get caught). • There’s a shop in st enochs centre that has cute baby grows with a tunnock tea cake. Very cute. If buying clothes don’t necessarily by newborn as they get loads and having some bigger sizes ready as babies grown are useful. You can never have too many baby grows as they will need multiple a day and washing is an endless cycle. If it’s her first baby, ask if there is anything she needs specifically. Places like the bigger boots will have lots baby products. A white noise toy is found to be helpful. Ewan the dream sheep is highly recommended and several of my friends think it’s great. Sophie the giraffe is a good teething toy. Smyths toy store over at The Fort has a good baby section. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 7:45pm)

  • For things like ancestry.com cross reference everything. It has lots of good info, but people can add their own info so there are mistakes they have made about who certain people are. I personally haven’t used it. I am passing info on from my mum who has gone heavy with the family tree. As there was a tradition of naming a first son after their paternal grandfather in Scotland, you get multiple generations through families with the same name recurring (for examples there are multiple James Davidsons and Mary Davidsons in one arm of my family. The record chain she found was 7 in a row). It means that some people make a mistake and attribute one person as being someone in the family but when you start cross checking from multiple sources, it doesn’t really add up as you find someone having a child at age 10 or 56 years old. She said it is a really good resource to add to the arsenal of resources, but not to rely only on one source by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:21am)
  • My mum used to work at a factory in the east end. She was from Ayrshire and went to Glasgow uni. It was her first job after graduating and was in charge of the admin for the factory floor. The men and women working in the floor viewed her as their charge, their responsibility to look after from any nutters or violence in the area. She sorted a lot of stuff for them, so it was a two way street. She said she only ever heard stories but would regularly get walked/escorted to bus stops and they’d wait with her. She’d get a few choice words from the women if she left on her own. The ice cream wars didn’t involve everyone in the area. But it is like it is now, lots of young men with limited opportunities get sucked in and once your in, it is very difficult to get out by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 2:07pm)

Also, the PIMS-TS, hyper inflammatory condition that can affect kids/teenagers who get covid (rare but very serious) is really nasty, if she gets vaccinated there is probably alert risk of her passing it on to others Unfortunately, despite saying the above, I have no advice on how to get her vaccinated. • I’ve just heard an advert in the radio and it confirmed that at the moment the appointment system is only applying to teenagers who are in a high risk group (I.e. have underlying health condition), unpaid carers, or live with someone in a high-risk group. If she falls into one of them then could get an appointment. Otherwise it is a walk-in centre and wait, which is just stupid. • Yeah it’s not appropriate when it gets into others homes to stink the place out. However they might not realise that it is happening since they go to the back door. I had a neighbour who did this in our tenement and you could smell the cigarettes all the way up the close. One day one of the neighbours got talking to him while he was out there and let him know that it could be smelt higher up and any chance he could smoke further out into the garden. • Lateral flows aren’t 100% accurate. The reason we’ve to do them is to try and pick up most asymptomatic covid infection (hopefully) and get those people to isolate to stop them spreading it. It’s a relatively cheap, fast, do at home test, so is good for this type of mass screening. If you have symptoms you HAVE TO GET a PCR test. Go get it. Covid is not just the three listed symptoms of cough or fever or loss of taste/smell. You can get others. People working in hospitals have a longer list of symptoms that trigger a PCR test because they are working with those already vulnerable. PCR is a lot more sensitive so is used to target symptomatic people by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 7:33pm)
  • I’d be surprised if ceilidhs will go ahead in the next 3 weeks. With social distancing to be 1m in hospitality venues, you can’t do that while ceilidh dancing unless you can get enough people from three households to make up a set and keep with that same set the entire night (no orcadian strip the willow ☚ī¸). If you find somewhere and it’s within guidelines, it’ll probably be quite tame. If it’s not within guidelines, it’s not safe. Sorry. It’s not what you want to hear. I’m really not a meditation type person, but sitting quietly for 15mins a day listening and doing it really helps when your head is all over the place but it takes some practice so also do it when you’re having a good day too Also, make sure you get a bit of exercise. Has been proven to be really helpful for mental health (I’m a nerd and look for evidence based stuff). • Would she be looking for a house or a flat? Does she drive or need good transport links very close by? What kind of interests does she have? And is she looking to buy or rent? I’ve lived in various places on the south side my entire life so I’m biased but I think a lot of it is good, and with good transport links with buses and trains. I live currently in Shawlands and grew up a bit further out. I love Shawlands as you have most things locally that you need without travelling far, but transport links mean you can get away easily to other areas. • I don’t think it’ll be any slower that normal as the labs currently can’t afford to go slower on the tests due to volume (not as in cash afford, but in there would be too much of a backlog if they didn’t process over a four day weekend). That said, some people are getting results back within 24hrs and others taking about three days out with the public holidays. And numbers are increasing, and therefore more people are getting tested due to being contacts so may take a while. Sorry by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sat 1st Jan 2022 9:24pm)

  • I used to go to Gorbals Glasgow Club gym (I now have to split my time between here and Aberdeen and haven’t been for about six months). Booking an induction is a good idea. There is a lot of equipment and it was quite daunting. The people working there were very friendly and show you how to use the equipment. They were easy to talk to and spent more time on the things I said I thought I’d use more. And when I wasn’t sure later (as in different day) how to use a bit of equipment again, I just asked and they were happy to show me it again. A few months later when I wanted to try something I hadn’t used before, but they’d shown me at induction, they were happy to go over that stuff again too I’ve not used the other gyms but I would think they all have a similar vibe and staff would be approachable. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 7th Jan 2022 9:08pm)
  • It’s not a massive deal but there are always things to go to. There are less things about this year due to covid. Burns suppers, for someone who didn’t go to school in Scotland (we had Burns poetry inflicted, sorry, I mean taught to us for years) or have a vague understanding of burns, there not the best thing to go to unless your with a group. There’s usually a three course meal with burn’s poetry readings. There’s usually toasts which, if done well, should be very funny. I’m not a major burns enthusiast, but I do think Burns Suppers are good fun if a big group of people go. Add a ceilidh and it’s a fantastic night (ceilidhs are nowhere near covid safe). There is a Best of Scottish Comedy at The Stand in the west end for burns night which would be good. The national trust is doing an online thing, Burns Big Night Inn if you want to have a look. If you want a bit of a different thing for Robert burns, there’s a play that Oran mor does intermittently called The Ghosting of Rabbie Burns. • I didn’t go to that college but I understand it’s is big. That means it is perfect as you will just be one of many apprehensive people in the first days and weeks. Many people can hide it well but most will have some anxieties about going somewhere new. The people doing you course/classes automatically have at least that one topic in common interest. At college/uni there are lots of clubs and societies. Go along to some that you think sound interesting. If you tried them and not for you, no prob. If you enjoy, great. With the college being big and in Glasgow it’s not going to be an issue being gender-neutral. There will likely be other people who similarly feel gender neutral. Glasgow tends to also be a generally friendly place. Just chat to other students. The good thing when you start is that most people start at the same time so you can ask if they’re from Glasgow or came for college, if they’re from Glasgow tell them your not and ask their advice on places to go (something that they’re interested in will get people chatting). You can use not being familiar with the place to start conversations. Either the person knows Glasgow and will tell you about it, or they won’t and will be in the same situation as you. If anyone seems a bit of a dick, then easy enough to not try to be friends, there are loads of other people. For the commute use the time for something pleasant, time to listen to podcasts/audiobooks, download a video on to phone before (obviously only if your battery will still last the day), read a book. Personally I can’t read on a bus or train, and especially could never study in my commute so used it for the time to listen to music or podcasts. It’s a time to chill, even maybe meditate. Or, as I got very good at falling asleep in the bus, sleep. Put headphones in and set your alarm for a good 10 mins before your due to arrive at you stop. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 20th Jan 2022 2:59am)

Suspect it is a very Scottish/British recipe sauce that has been given a the name of a real dish. The recipes I’ve tried on line aren’t sweet and sour but are very tasty. • When we moved in, we met a few people while moving stuff up to the flat and they were leaving or getting home. A few were just hellos, two we had a bit of chat with. I’m a chatter which helps but I did let them take the lead if they wanted a conversation. As time went on it continued with hellos while passing in the close, a few conversations. You inevitably take parcels in for others and they take ones for you so can get chatting when handing over. I now know almost all my neighbours but that’s to do with lockdown (put my number through everyone’s doors and a note suggesting a WhatsApp group as I was going to be at home and would happily do some shopping for anyone in isolation as I’d having nothing else to do). Most people joined the group. It’s still going. Mainly the occasional bit of gossip, but handy for close maintenance/problems like plumbing and dealing with the factors (it’s great when you can gang up on the and tell them that they’ve told people different things!). Also good for “emergency situations” like “help! My hairdryer just died and I’m going out know half and hour. Can I borrow one from someone?” Just play it by ear. As long as between you, you can afford the rent, regardless of it’s one of you or both, then you should be fine The only issue could be how long you are here. Some places want a minimum length of rental (eg 6m or a year). So if you’re here for less than that, your options could be more restricted. It’s a comfy place for the cat to be and most importantly it is safe. Also see how much they’re feeding him as if he’s getting a lot there and with you maybe he should see the vet. Maybe a few texts back and forth (eg is my cat at yours? Yes I’ll send him out if your back/no out on the prowl apparently) However, it is your cat and if you want to set boundaries, and where you want those boundaries and what you’re comfortable with is the important bit by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 12th Apr 2022 1:30pm)

  • If there’s a good reason to get it, your gp can do it for free. The appointments at Superdrug are just for the nurse to draw blood but you need to have bought the test from somewhere before and you get the appointment when you do that. Medichecks.com and some other places are where you buy it and then book the appointment in Glasgow preferred clinic when buying it. You could call up Nuffield or Ross hall yourself and ask if they’ll do it. Probably will There’s some places online that will send you a finger prick test kit to send away for testing. The issue is the interpretation of the results, and if they are off, who do you go to. It’s also going to cost you likely more than £50 for the basics. Way way more of more specialised stuff. Hope this has been of help. • I’d say the above is useful. For the laundry thing, I find most rented accommodation has a washing machine. Not necessarily a dryer or a combined washing machine/ dryer. It’s not a problem. You get a foldable clothes horse to hang your stuff on and air dry it (there’s several names for the thing I mean but I put the term clothes horse in Amazon and they come up if you want n idea). If you get a foldable one you can store easily when not in use. I’ve been doing my laundry without a dryer for more than a decade and it’s not an issue. Saves energy too. If your place doesn’t have a washing machine then there are some laundromats around you can use, just less convenient than at home. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 15th Jun 2022 5:52am)
  • I agree with you. It’s her decision to come while infected and risk others, but you have your say over your own home and behaviour. Tell her it’s her decision if she wants to come to Glasgow but you can’t let her stay as you aren’t comfortable with the risk to family I’d personally be uncomfortable going to the concert with her knowing she has covid. And with her in health care I’m sort of surprised she’s happy to go to such crowded areas. There aren’t any current restrictions and people don’t NEED to isolate. If she’s working in health care, it’s likely she’s not allowed to work at the moment. Takes you right to the front door of airport On the way back I arrived about 10.30 at night. There was a number to call at the bus stop as they weren’t running as often. • You could just take it to your own bank. They might have a machine behind the scenes and do it. Or go get some of those plastic money bags from the bank and spend 10-30 mins every day filling one or more up. I find it strangely relaxing doing that. Or message me and I’ll do it!😛 Or just use one of those machines at the supermarket and accept that it will take a cut. I know coin star take about 11%. Some find it worth it. • Sorry to hear how much your struggling. Definitely go see your gp. They can direct you the right way. If they suggest some kind of medication (they might or might not), do consider it. Can take the edge off and help with recovery. Referrals to secondary care through nhs take a while so you might have a wait but it does happen, or there might be a primary care service that might be better for you. There is a Glasgow charity life link which you should look at. They do counselling service up to four appointments if your not under care of a psychiatrist. It might not sound like much but it’s a start. There are lots of private counsellors out there. And there are different types of counselling. This takes you to a link for a service on the southside. I have not used them so can’t recommend or not, but the reason I’m putting the link is that it shows you the variety of counselling and therapy available. Have a look through and see if there is some type that might be more what you’re looking for. Or if no idea, then person-centred counselling is probably what you need. Literally someone to talk to confidentially in a safe place and who is trained. If you have occupational health at work, it might be worth approaching them too as they can often advise. If you work for the nhs (you might be, biggest employer in the uk). then they will definitely be able to refer you I hope this helps and gets you the guidance and assistance you need. • Do go the nhs process. As someone else has said, if you want management on the nhs they won’t accept a private diagnosis. A lot of the private companies will give diagnoses at really high rates and don’t use standardised methods or give details for how it was diagnosed or other details if asked by nhs services later, so the nhs, I think, has a blanket policy to only do in house assessments. I will warn you that this will take a long time. Psychiatry services have been stretched for a long time, and in the last 6-12 months there has been a major spike in referrals for possible adhd in adults (partly stems from a lot of stuff on TikTok) so the sections that do adhd assessments are really stretched. There are things you could do while waiting or considering even asking for a referral. add.org and adhduk.co.uk have questionnaires you can do which could indicate to you if adhd is likely. There is also Addiss.co.uk is also worth a look. They will also have information on management. Adhd is a life long condition and symptoms have to have been present in childhood. If it’s issues that have only been present in adulthood then an adhd referral may not be helpful, but other there may be another form of help is better. • Not a foreigner but looked into it a while back as I’d been passing by wellington while a walking tour was happening and heard the tour guide say that it was in a top 10 of the most bizarre monuments on earth by Lonely Planet. I go down thought black holes sometime and look into these things to verify and learn more (I’m pretty useful at pub quizzes as a result, just don’t ask me music, sports or dates). I ready several articles that talked about how it was a symbol that represented the attitudes of Scotland and Glasgow. Particularly the Scottish/Glaswegian sense of humour. And that it represents the Scot’s continuous background level of rebellion against anything they see as authority going a bit too far (our outright taking the piss). In the 80s people started putting a cone on his head (generally while drunk of course) and it was costing the council £1000s to remove it every year. The then put the statue in the plinth it is on now to deter people from doing it. Just made it worse. Continuously had a cone. Council then said “screw it. Just leave it there”. The most I’ve personally ever seen on top of his head is 7 cones at a time plus 2 on the horse at the same time (pub quiz knowledge; wellington’s horse was called Copenhagen). It always puts a smile on my face, even when i was going through a really rough patch a while back, so if the council ever decides it needs to stop, I’ll be among the many continuing to cause mischief to keep it there, even if I’m in my 80s when it’s needed. Or it’s simply it looks different and funny by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 4:52pm)
  • Make sure you e tried the three available antihistamines cetirizine, loratidine and fexofenadine to see if any are better than the others. Where possible don’t go for a brand. Generic is exactly the same active ingredient for a fraction of the price (same goes for other drugs. Don’t spend £2-3 on paracetamol when you can get it for 50p). • Had ours made. Have the fortune of having a mother in law who is good at sewing. We bought the fabric (that was still really expensive) and she made them. I went for a very neutral colour so that I could redecorate later and not have to change the curtains. That was 15 years ago, have redecorated twice since then and the have the same curtains! Do you know anyone who can see them? by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 25th Jul 2022 8:23pm)
  • I’d recommend saving up and investing in good material if you do go down this route. And go for a neutral colour. Then you can use them for decades. If you do make your own you could do a “practice” curtain first. I believe people who design and make their own clothes will sometimes make the dress out of muslin, or an equally cheap fabric, to see if it will work. It allows them to adjust patterns ,etc without wasting expensive fabric. Or they make the mock-up (think that’s the name given to the piece) to see if it will fit/suit them. Although doing a curtain like that would add a bit to the overall cost, the practice would be valuable and it’s a good way to make your learner mistakes without ruining the expensive fabric, so saving money and rage in the process. • It is shit when this happens. I don’t agree with only same day appointments being available, but I can see why it gets done. You can put a complaint into the practice manager about it. Unless they know there are problems. They can’t do anything about it. I’d write an email laying out the issues and why it doesn’t work for you (specifically the appointment system, don’t use your specific problem because their response might be, oh well you would need to have seen a doctor anyway for that’s prescription anyway. Put it about the time it took to get someone to talk to, etc). They should reply and address the problems. If it’s not a helpful response then reply with your points. Remain polite but clear. You never know, you might get a change. Some people like having a practice that works this way and that they can be seen the same day. Personally it doesn’t work for me. My practice started heading towards it. I start work at 8.30 and can’t get away until 10am at least to make a call for 5 mins let along the 30mins I needed to get through. So unless I was I’ll enough to actually be off work it was useless. Calling about something that could wait a couple of days or even just booking a follow up appointment for a few weeks for more difficult that getting seen on the day! I did actually write to the practice manager and laid out the issues with it in general and got a reply that they’d had similar feed back. I had included that when I got though one day at 10.30 and was told that people need to call at 8.30 I had let the receptionist know I had been calling since 8.30 but hadn’t been able to get through! Now it is you need to call at 8.30 for same day or a day or two appointments which is still a nightmare, but you can also call later and make an appointment for a few weeks later for non-urgent stuff. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 28th Jul 2022 12:16am)
  • For during the day, Brooklyn Cafe in Shawlands has a good vegan menu. I’m not vegan and always have a look at it and regularly order stuff off it. Bramble near it has a number of vegan options which are nice. Both Brooklyn cafe and bramble close about 4.30 pm Ranjit’s kitchen is a vegetarian curry restaurant also on the southside. They have plenty of vegan options. Paesano always has one vegan pizza on their daily specials and can order any pizza without cheese. Likelywise Pizza Punk gets a good right up for vegan pizzas. I really like both those places, and have had one of the vegan pizzas at paesano and didn’t miss the cheese (both places have really good pizza bases and I think that’s what makes the difference) by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 29th Jul 2022 3:29am)
  • It does seem to be a thing that most tenements have mice. That being said, I have never seen one in my flat in the last 15 years and have only see two in the garden. I know from my neighbours that over the years a few mice have been seen. We do keep the close and garden clean and uncluttered. The bin store is at the back of the garden and we keep it clean too. So nothing to attract them more than anywhere else. During lockdown my close got a whatsapp group going, which is why I know about the mice. A mattress had been put out the back for collection just before lockdown and hadn’t been picked up so we think that was a place they had nested. Managed to get it taken away. Ended up most of us got those plug-in sonic mouse deterrents after the mouse was seen. My sister (who lives in London) also told me to stick steel wool in any little gaps in skirting boards, etc as they can get through tiny places. Haven’t needed to do this as can’t find gaps. Honestly any apartment type building will likely have mice in it somewhere, it’s just not obvious. Most people I know that have lived in tenements haven’t had big problems with them by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 29th Jul 2022 3:42am)
  • There’s some places starting to make decent vegan pizza. With the ones at paesano and pizza punk, they just lack the cheese rather than them trying to replace it with a poor substitute, but the bases they use and other ingredients (as long as you do go for other toppings!) make it taste great. I don’t think there is a good enough vegan substitute cheese yet for pizzas, but vegan cheese has come along way in the last few years so fingers crossed someone works it out for the full experience! Been having a think about your diet changes you’ve had to make and where to go out for a meal. I don’t have other specifics to recommend, but sounds like you could start trying out Indian, Chinese and Japanese places and dishes. Chinese/Japanese/Thai/Vietnamese cooking doesn’t use much, if any, dairy and just go for vegetarian or chicken options. Although Indian food often contains dairy, there are plenty of vegetarian options and restaurants are realising that vegan Ian is becoming more popular so Indian restaurants tend to have plenty already that are vegan. The only thing with Indian restaurants and something that sounds vegan but hasn’t been labelled as either, is just check whether ghee is used making it. I haven’t been back to the Dhabba or Dhakin in Glasgow since lockdown, but they were always good before it and have lots of options by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sat 30th Jul 2022 12:53am)

They can direct you/refer you to addiction services. There are a number of charities out there too. The Priory have an addiction unit but is a private service so is expensive, unless you have insurance. But would still recommend your gp first. • Go into town and over to the GOMA (gallery of modern art). It’s not massive so a wander round in the morning is possible. Also outside it is the statue of Wellington which always has at least one traffic cone on his head and the image has become one of the symbols often used to represent glasgow. There a walking tour by walkingtoursin.com that starts at 10.30 in the city centre. Might be worth a look This one sounds weird but there are tours of Glasgow central station and one of them starts in the morning. It takes you behind the scenes and covers a lot of the history of the station and Glasgow. With your interest in architecture it is definitely worth a look. I’ve been on this tour and enjoyed it (was pre covid so a while back). https://www.glasgowcentraltours.co.uk Go for a walk down Buchanan street. Is worth a look for the architecture. • They must get in by the red door to the right. From google maps satellite view and the floor plan, it is a bit of a weird shape that end of the building. On the floor plan you can see that the back door comes of the kitchen to go out into a small hall then the back garden. That small hall is probably communal and connects to the other flats next door, but will also have stairs up to those above. Corner ground floor flats in tenements often have a weird layout when the building end isn’t at right angles, making it difficult to have a communal hallway to access all floors. So architects often made corner ground in those flats their own little one with its own door, and then used a separate entrance for the floors above. Sometimes it was round the corner, others, like this, involved the next door over. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 25th Aug 2022 2:04pm)

  • There are a few all in one type clinics for specific things (eg breast clinic). Most aren’t and a first appointment will be info gathering and examination, maybe bloods. It will then be planning t investigations if needed and suggesting treatment. Without knowing what it’s for (please don’t tell us if you don’t want) I can’t give more specifics, but that’s the basics of most specialist clinics. Sometimes clinics will have physios or similar health professionals there too. Cardiology clinic might have someone doing echos (heart scans) for that clinic at the same time as that would likely affect planning immediately. Does your appointment say anything about how long the appointment will be? If it does state that, then it’s usually more than seeing the doctor for assessment. • City centre and west end are the most expensive areas to rent. But Glasgow and the surrounding areas have good transport links. I went to Glasgow uni (west end) for 5 years without a car, and I lived in the southside. Would have been even easier if I’d gone to Caledonian uni. So if you look beyond west end and city centre you’ll find somewhere cheaper. Yes there are increases in cost of living and it’s likely to get worse. However my understanding is that the base cost of living in Scandinavian countries has been higher than Britain for a long time, so that might impact what you consider comparable. These are stupid comparison but it’s what I have available (partner has been working a few days a month in Oslo recently). In Oslo, A pint of beer is about 33-50% more expensive. Just some animal” by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 24th Oct 2022 10:10am)

  • For the rubbish: Contact the landlord again and inform him since it is his tenants that are causing the issues with rubbish attracting vermin, he has “give him a specific timeframe” before you contact public health. Make the contact via writing and keep copies, ideally by email. If no change, then go to public health. If he’s still an arse then you can hint at over occupancy and whether it is legal for that many to be there. Since you’d mentioned official lines before, it might give them the kick up the arse to keep the rent coming. Go to the family again (maybe with a box of chocolates or something to show non-hostility) with google translate open and try to find out what language they speak and explain the rubbish and noise issue. If they fob you off not helping with the effort to translate, then you know they are just being dicks and therefore a direction to go. If there is some genuine attempt then you can get some back and forth and hopefully some change. If you do get more communication going the could find out a bit more about their situation and if getting council housing or refugee charity support or some other help source would help Good luck by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 25th Oct 2022 2:21pm)

  • As someone has mentioned, in a flat building, each individual flat should have a water shut off (aka cock stop valve). Ask the current tennent where it is (also the fuse box if you don’t know), And if they don’t know and you can’t find yours, ask other people in the building. It’s often that they are in the same place in each flat. If it’s an old building (ie a Glasgow tenement) then they often aren’t the same in each flat as they would have been retro-fitted (used to be one valve for the whole building). Current tenet is a good source for these kind of things by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 27th Oct 2022 10:59pm)
  • When I was in aberdeen and cracked a wisdom tooth and couldn’t get back to Glasgow for a while, I called 111 and they sent me to the dental school up there. I got an excellent service and would happily see them again. They are supervised all the way. It takes longer that a standard appointment. It was free I hate the dentist and have get very anxious in the chair. I told the student that, she was lovely and was good at distracting me and keeping me calm. • I don’t think you’d have an issue. Personally I’d get the train back rather than the bus. I feel the train station has better light and more visible. If I could I’d maybe try to sit near a group of other women. I don’t know why but I’d feel safer. Hopefully they back me up if I got harassed and felt intimidated, which is not likely to happen in the first place. More likely you’d get chatting with them anyway. Just a general safety tip for walking alone is no headphones and body language. Walk confidently even if you don’t feel it. Walk tall, back straight, shoulder down and head up. • I know in paediatrics GPs don’t prescribe ADHD meds, it’s the paediatricians (GP produces the actual written/printed prescription for the pharmacy on the instruction of the paediatrician so that when it comes time for repeat, that can be done by the GP, and changes are guided by the Paediatrician). I suspect it’s the same in the adult sector. My only suggestion is to take your paperwork to the GP with the report diagnosing ADHD (I’m assuming ADHD Direct produces one) and any other reports about effectiveness of medication including what medication and dose. Although I suspect that you won’t have anything referencing the effect of the medication. You’ll need to tell the gp the effect of the medication and improvement in quality of life. Explain you can’t afford to continue it privately and fear the effect stopping it will have on your life, job, etc. this is so they can put it all in a referral so the secondary care can have the info. It’s likely to take a while to be seen but giving them all the info can help. And if the report shows how they diagnosed you and using what tools, then they may (and I am going to emphasise the word “may”) be able to speed up the process of full assessment isn’t needed. It’s only a possibility but worth doing. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 15th Nov 2022 7:51pm)
  • When they were investigating Angelica Kluks murder, there was a parallel investigation at the same time that was kept low-key, even from some of the people investigating Angelika’s murder (they didn’t want to jeopardise the Kluk murder causing confusion, but when they got Tobin they went public with the secondary investigation). After a short time of investigating Tobin they figured there was no way this was his first killing. This secondary investigation looked at missing people in areas Tobin lived in at the time. They also looked at if he could be Bible John, and concluded that no, he wasn’t. He didn’t live in Glasgow, or even near to it, for the majority of the murders and there isn’t any evidence that he travelled back to Glasgow during that time. Then there is some DNA evidence that excluded him too. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 16th Nov 2022 5:30pm)

  • Now might be a really bad time to ask this question as it is currently -5C and had been below 0C all day! And not even any snow to make snowmen or have a fight! So people will be particularly annoyed with the weather. I grew up in Glasgow and for a large part of my adult life. Mainly not too cold, but enough that you do need a decent jacket. Yes it rains a lot compared to other Scottish places, but you get used to being permanently damp when you’ve been outside, and either remember an umbrella or say “fuck it” and keep your head down while walking (at least I do as I have glasses). I will warn you on one thing; the moment the temperature gets more than 10C or there is a bit of sun, you’ll see lots of guys with their shirts off as who knows if it will be the one day of summer that we get. • Absolutely call the police. This sounds terrifying. I’m so sorry you had to go through this. If you see him again while out, call 999 there and then. And get to somewhere with lots of people. If there’s a shop go in there. Ask someone that works there for help, explain what’s happening and they should be able to take you in back and out of the way. If no shops but you see a group of girls, or another group that you would feel comfortable with, go and ask if you can stay with them. Again explain the situation and that you feel that being in a group will keep him away. Certainly if anyone came up to me and said something vaguely like this, even if it was just me on my own, then that person is not going anywhere without me. I’m not separating from you until after you’ve finished with the police, are in a taxi or with a friend. Just being with one other person is usually enough to scare off someone. • This is a very long shot, but have you approached the university? I know they can help get assessments for dyslexia and dyscalcula. Not sure about ADHD assessment. honestly I doubt they do them but it’s worth talking to student welfare or someone else at the uni before paying for an assessment. You should get an answer to it quickly. Also, if you go privately for an assessment, check with your GP practice first if they will accept a private diagnosis to then allow them to prescribe any medication on the NHS. I’ve heard a few people who’s GPS haven’t accepted the diagnosis done privately and private prescriptions can be expensive. I don’t know what the issue was. It maybe just the practice being annoying, but maybe that they felt the testing wasn’t to robust/standardised enough to reliably diagnose ADHD. Check with your practice if they have any restrictions so that you know ahead of time if you need to go somewhere that does assessments in a certain way by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 8th Jun 2023 5:47pm)

  • Suspect you’ll be walking in the same direction as several hundred people also leaving the gig. That means that trying to get a bus or taxi will be a nightmare, walking will be faster and the streets busy. You should be fine. Although you could get the underground from cessnock to bridge street. You might prefer that if you’re not too sure of the route you’re taking, and it obviously is an area with lots of people, lighting and CCTV. Just be wary of your wallet if it is really busy. It’s likely that the underground will be busy and the trains full, but another one comes round quick. The underground is used to big crowds since there’s one at ibrox (used to work that over that way and it gets rammed on match days). Stop in at am late night chippie and you’ll probably leave having made friends with everyone who was in there (or witnessed a fight. It’ll be one or the other. Possibly both). In the unlikely event that the streets get quiet, the buses will probably have stopped by then. You might be able to hail a black cab. Just be sensible. • This is from a good 20 years ago when I was at uni. We’d been at the pub (not an overly heavy night as lectures in morning, but still quite pissed) and got the one of the last underground’s from urea road into town to go out various ways home. There were about 10 of us. Being a bit noisy but just towards each other laughing and talking. We got on what appeared to be an empty carriage and carried on. After a few mins we spotted a little old lady down the other end of the carriage looking a bit scared of us (she looked about 80+, small, and had had a nice quiet carriage until so loud mouthed drunk students came bustling in. Not surprised she was a bit intimidated). One of my mates went over to her, sat down and asked if she wanted a chip from his late night visit to the chippy. She started laughing and took some. When we saw her laugh the rest of us joined them and we all chatted. She got off smiling a few stops later I know that if she’d refused and still seemed scared my mate would have reassured her (he has the gift of the gab in a way that would have worked, even when tipsy) and rejoined us getting us. Just makes me smile when I think of it. • I can’t give you specific about leverndale experience but can maybe help with what psychotherapy is. Counselling vs psychotherapy is that counselling is a talking therapy generally aimed at specific problems, while psychotherapy is a a talking therapy that is less specific problem orientated. Often it is chatting about your past with another trained person. Talking things through helps you explore your concerns, thoughts and feelings about various things in you and reflect of matters possibly in a different way than you have before. Whereas counselling usually only takes a few visits, psychotherapy is usually done over a longer period of time. It seems daunting at first if you don’t know anything about it, but the first few sessions will be the psychotherapist getting to know you a bit and working out the best ways they can help you. It can help to talk to someone you don’t know well, and in a situation that is safe and you know the information is confidential. I know it is easier said than done, but please don’t worry about it. At the end of the day it is just talking. And it is really common for people going for the first time to be anxious and shut down, not knowing what to say. But that’s what the psychotherapist is used to and is trained for. I can’t give you specifics of what you’ll do together, you and any therapist you work with, as a lot of it will be tailored to you and your needs. I hope this has helped settle some of your anxiety and I hope you find some help from them for you mental well-being by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sun 30th Jul 2023 5:46pm)

  • Glasgow used to have a high murder rate (for Europe) and stabbing rate. Major work was done on many of the problems that caused this and the rates fell dramatically. It has its problems like everywhere else but is a friendly safe city overall. Being a black woman here shouldn’t be a problem. Like everywhere there are racist assholes about, but thankfully not many. Glasgow is relatively diverse, but since Glasgow and Strathclyde universities have good reputations, there are lots of overseas students that go to them, so the universities are more diverse above Glasgow as a whole. You also won’t have issues meeting people. You’ll have those who you share classes with, and universities have clubs (sometimes called societies depending on the club) for a vast array of interests, so you can meet people that way. And Scots are just friendly. We talk to everyone! The shirt colour thing is about football (soccer. Please call it football while your here). Two team in Glasgow have a massive rivalry. They are Celtic (green and white) and Rangers (blue with some red and white). There are always some idiot fans who are up for fighting each other. So generally don’t go out wearing either of their strips of match day and you’re good. • This will probably get lost but I still want to add it incase anyone finds it helpful. I’m a woman in my 40s and have had some mental health issues. I didn’t physically self harm but I get why some do it. When ever I see the tell tale healed scars of self harm, I tend to think of them as someone’s old battle scars. When they are clearly mature scars with no sign of nothing new, it shows that that battle was won in some way (I know it’s not as simple as that with mental health, but you know what I mean). By all means cover them up if that’s what makes you comfortable, but remember they are now a reflection of survival. Also, if anyone asks again, I’d personally make up a more ridiculous story every time. For example: - sky dive went wrong and I landed on a greenhouse - I’m part zebra - Freddy Kruger got to me in my sleep but I won - I battled a dragon Go wild by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Mon 14th Aug 2023 2:28pm)

Thespark.org.uk is also available, although I don’t know much about it Mind.org has been helpful for me in the past. And I know they do stuff for young people None of these are Glasgow specific (the Spark do have counselling available for people in Glasgow and Edinburgh), but all are online so easily accessible. Information is free. Some offer counselling for free. Others you need to pay for some of the services but generally lower cost than going to private psychiatrists or similar. Some have telephone hotlines for advice, including for crises. The helplines can be for your teen to use, or for you for support and advice Lifelink in Glasgow is a mental health charity. They do some stuff for 11-18year olds. I’ve used them as an adult in the past and found them helpful. Their website also has podcasts about relaxation techniques and grounding exercises which I found useful for anxiety. They take practice so the podcasts are useful to walk you through them, so you can learn to use the technique without them when it’s needed. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Thu 17th Aug 2023 10:39am)

  • Others have said it, but Bravissimo absolutely. They will help you find a bra in whatever style you’re looking for. They don’t really measure you. They have a look at how you’re current bra sits and it’s size and then work from there (they will get the tape measure out if you don’t have a clue what size you are and the size on your bra label has faded away). Because they know their products so we’ll, they can take that into account and will end up bringing different bras in different sizes and they all seem to work. If it’s not quite right they’ll then get the right one. And I’ve never felt uncomfortable with them. They are very professional and relaxed. I’ve honestly given up going other places. It’s just so much easier to walk into bravissimo and say “I need/want a t-shirt bra/wireless bra/bra for this dress for a wedding. Help” and they help. I’ve also had a wander looking to see what they’ve got, picked up what I though would fit and then asked for help because I’m sure I’ll have got the wrong size. I find that other places they’ll often measure you and given you a specific size and stick to that, only going slightly above or below, whereas bravissimo work off you and the product rather than concentrating on what’s printed on a label. In bravissimo I can be anywhere between an DD to an FF and that’s without any fluctuations in weight, so they know their products well by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Fri 20th Oct 2023 6:24pm)

Ultimately where you live (your postcode, zip code in USA) will determine which gps you can join. There will be a number that take people from your postcode. I wouldn’t rely too much on online reviews for GP practices when they are mixed. Probably would pay attention if they are all bad, or there is one thing that consistently comes up over and over. I’d get registered with a gp as soon as you can though. Many/most GPs would want to meet with you before prescribing meds, especially if they were prescribed abroad. Just a bit more info on meds in the uk; - if controlled drugs like opiates, absolutely get registered now because they will definitely breed to see you and may need to do some contacting or your doctors in usa or similar - if it’s for adhd meds, there is a national shortage at the moment (actually it is worldwide, but particularly problematic at the moment in the uk) - I know that in the USA that often specific brands of drugs are prescribed. In the uk, it’s often the generic that is prescribed but there is no difference so don’t worry about it. There are a few drugs that need to be brand specific (eg some anti-seizure meds) but these are well known about by doctors so shouldn’t be an issue either. - once you have seen the doctor and they’ve prescribed them. Make sure that they are put on repeat prescription. For most things this is fine unless the gp has a specific reason to want to see you again before the next prescription. Having it on repeat prescription means you don’t need a doctors appointment to get the next script (usually you call the practice and just ask for a new script for the drug, sometimes a dedicated line, some places can do it online). You can also get your local pharmacy to arrange to have the prescription delivered to them directly and they’ll get it ready for you to pick up. Many pharmacies will do a repeat prescription service, so when you get your meds, if it’s something you need at set times rather than as required, you just ask if they can order you the next one in however many weeks or months it will be. by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Tue 24th Oct 2023 8:02pm)
  • Abuse doesn’t need to include physically hitting you. What you’re experiencing absolutely is abuse. And it’s not just from drinking. She’s making the decisions to uninvite you to things, to not introduce to you friends and family for ages and similar things. You are being gaslighted repeatedly. Serious emotional and psychological abuse. Please look after yourself and leave. Do not go back. It will be hard since you love her, but this is destroying you. If she indicates she wants you back, she’ll love bomb you and promise to make changes, then it will all start again. Please walk away and stay away. If she starts to floods you with messages after leaving, don’t reply to every one. Just message her politely that you the two of you have parted ways, and you wish her the best but you want her to stop contacting you in this way. Just pre-emoting any manipulation on her part about wanting your help for alcohol or similar, again let her know that you regret you cannot be personally there for her, but you are struggling yourself at the moment, advise her to see her GP and Alcoholics Anonymous. Make these messages simple, and to the point. I’d recommend any contact like the above includes a text so you can keep a record of it, if she tries to pull something, so it shows you were clear about things. If she is bombing you with messages after breaking up, it could be you only contact her by text as getting into verbal conversations with her will be far easier to manipulate you and further gaslight you Keep a record of all the contact she makes and anything she does incase she goes stalker mode. It means you already have evidence for a restraining order if needed. Please get out. Get help. You are not imagining this. You are the first priority. I’ve had a look and this looks like a list of support for men who experience domestic abuse in Glasgow : https://abusedmeninscotland.org/local/glasgow/ Go see your GP as well and link in with mental health support. You are not imagining this. Please leave and don’t go back by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Wed 25th Oct 2023 12:07pm)

  • When the tip is included as a service charge and you pay by card, or for those places that have the machines where someone can add a tip themselves to card payments, do the staff actually get the money? Do they get the extra above and beyond their wages, and when do they get it (eg with normal pay packet, or end of the night)? by Inevitable_Thing_270 (Sat 25th Nov 2023 1:36pm)
