  • I can second this. It also helps if you offer terms. My landlord was happy enough but just asked for an extra £100 on the deposit and a new clause agreeing I would pay to have the place professionally cleaned when I left, which I was happy to agree to. by callsignhotdog (Mon 7th Jan 2019 4:20pm)
  • Yup, most of Yorkshire and Cornwall used to have the same problem. Government introduced a law in I think 1990-ish that basically said the Government would foot the bill if your house fell into an old mineshaft, so the banks and insurance companies unclenched their sphincters and started serving people in those areas again. by callsignhotdog (Tue 8th Jan 2019 9:44pm)

  • Cuningar Loop for a nice paved Riverside walk. Paths are wide enough to go around other dogs. Cathkin Braes for a really peaceful stroll through the woods, you might see other dogs but they'll be few and far between. That's where we take our hyper nervous shih tzu and she loves it there. by callsignhotdog (Sat 12th Jan 2019 12:22pm)
  • Eh don't blame Glasgow, I've lived here, Manchester and Southampton and seen roughly the same thing happen with the same reaction in every city. Glaswegians aren't the problem, humans are. by callsignhotdog (Mon 14th Jan 2019 2:18pm)

  • I have honestly never seen a Council so anal about parking. Not a single place left uncontrolled. Every other city I've lived, there's always a few overlooked places where the well-informed local can leave their car for free for a couple of hours, but not Glasgow, who keep pushing it further and further out and fill in every last little nook and cranny with yellow lines. by callsignhotdog (Wed 16th Jan 2019 1:46pm)
  • The Brass Monkey has a good selection, but I've not been in recently so I can't guarantee you they have it. I'd rate the odds pretty good though. Edit: If you want a chocolatey stout, try porters instead. Might just fit the bill for you. by callsignhotdog (Thu 17th Jan 2019 2:15pm)

  • If Barr don't release the classic recipe at a premium price to account for the sugar tax they're just leaving money on the table. I reckon they're just waiting a few years for the NuBru to become the norm, just so the classic release doesn't disrupt sales of BruTwo (Electric Brugaloo) by callsignhotdog (Wed 23rd Jan 2019 2:26pm)

  • Good save. My gf worked in a shop there (won't name which one) and literally had somebody wander in as they were closing up and ask for help because they'd been stabbed. Gf ended up having to first aid her until the ambulance and police showed up. by callsignhotdog (Fri 25th Jan 2019 10:39am)

  • I don't think they update their data, which is another advantage OP would have over this calculator (presumably). by callsignhotdog (Wed 6th Mar 2019 10:03am)
  • Oh absolutely, OP has a much better site, I just instantly remembered that example and working for a Tech startup I know a lot of it is cribbing off previous attempts at the idea so you can improve on them. by callsignhotdog (Wed 6th Mar 2019 10:01am)
  • In all fairness to OP, he's got an actual website and UI, and if he can get integrations with the big property sites he'd be sitting pretty. I just read the pitch and instantly remembered that BBC article and hey, 90% of the Tech industry is just cribbing old ideas and trying to do them better. Uber invented a fucking BUS and acted like it was innovation. by callsignhotdog (Wed 6th Mar 2019 10:00am)
  • The factor seems oddly opposed to fixing the lock situation. If I were of a suspicious bent of mind I'd think he was taking a payoff from the thieves to grant them easy access... by callsignhotdog (Sat 9th Mar 2019 7:26pm)
  • Is this the door for the Close or your flat? If it's the close you might want to give up on the close and get some heavier locks for your own door by callsignhotdog (Sat 9th Mar 2019 7:42pm)
  • Having lived in Manchester, Southampton and Glasgow I can safely conclude that it's a UK thing, with subtle regional variations on how far down and at what angle they put their hand. by callsignhotdog (Mon 18th Mar 2019 9:16am)
  • Ground floor/basement or first floor and above? Mortgage providers shouldn't be fussed, as long as you can get insurance. Insurers might be a different matter. Some insurers will base it on their own historic data, some will have a general exclusion for certain flood risk areas, some will have that exclusion but make an exception if you're above the ground floor, and some will only ask if your property has ever suffered flooding before. Best thing you can do is do a quote for cover on a comparison site. Answer all questions honestly and you'll get a list of insurers who are willing to cover the area. Then ring up the top three or so and ask them to confirm if they can cover it based on the specifics. There's also a Government scheme called FloodRe that basically works with insurers to reduce their risks and help owners get cover, that might be a good place to go for info - [https://www.floodre.co.uk/](https://www.floodre.co.uk/) As for the mining area stuff, most of the same advice applies. There's actually Government legislation that says they'll cover it in the event of subsidence due to mining activity so most insurers are happy enough with mining subsidence areas. Again, get quotes on a comparison site then call the top three or four to discuss the specifics. If they give a quote on the comparison site, you know they cover that postcode so the biggest hurdle is already cleared. by callsignhotdog (Tue 19th Mar 2019 11:54am)
  • If you're first floor you should be fine for flood insurance. Even if there's a flood you'll almost definitely be safe anyway (and if you're getting flooding past first floor you should forget about insurance and looking into buying a houseboat imo). by callsignhotdog (Tue 19th Mar 2019 1:41pm)

  • Glasgow is fantastic but if at all possible you'd want to hold off until the current crisis is sorted one way or another. Or, have a plan on what to do if you're told to leave after Brexit. Its probable that anyone already here is gonna get to stay, but Windrush taught us that the Home Office doesn't really worry about trivial things like "a legal right to be here" when it comes to arbitrarily deporting foreign born residents. by callsignhotdog (Sat 23rd Mar 2019 11:31am)
  • Pretty much yeah. I think the likelihood is that if we leave, EU residents will be allowed to stay, but it's so up in the air that anything could happen. I say make the move but have an emergency fund in place in case you suddenly have to move home on short notice. Remember the government has a Hostile Environment policy so if they decide you're no longer legal, you'll be unable to work, claim benefits or even rent a place to live. by callsignhotdog (Sat 23rd Mar 2019 11:53am)

  • I didn't have much sympathy then I saw they'd sold his debt to an American firm. Selling debts is shady as hell, when you take a loan out you're careful to pick who it's with. Then the terms change. by callsignhotdog (Mon 1st Apr 2019 11:32pm)
  • Might help to list some of your requirements - Budget, number of bedrooms, key features, acceptable distance from the Uni, etc? by callsignhotdog (Mon 8th Apr 2019 8:19pm)
  • Try the Finnieston area, plenty of student flats, it's walking distance to UoG and the city centre, not too pricey cause it's not RIGHT next to the Uni. by callsignhotdog (Mon 8th Apr 2019 9:11pm)
  • Check your insurance (home/contents), a lot of them include optional extras that cover locksmiths (Might be called something like "Home Emergency cover" or similar). Give the insurer a call and ask if you've got any cover for this situation. by callsignhotdog (Tue 9th Apr 2019 4:28pm)
  • There's definitely places out of the city that are worth having a car for (I mean, the Highlands are a stone's throw away by US standards) but as a guy who used to work in car insurance I would absolutely recommend against importing. Finding insurance for a US import is gonna be time-consuming and expensive. I've driven across the pond a few times, trust me, you get used to driving from the passenger seat pretty fast. The hard part is changing back after you've been doing it for a while. by callsignhotdog (Tue 9th Apr 2019 9:07pm)

  • It's fine. Like you said, there's good and bad areas in every city and on overall balance I'd rate Glasgow as better than most. I've been living her three years after moving from Manchester and I've never had a single problem or felt the least bit concerned walking about at night. Leave the " sh\*thole/chavy/dodgy/rough" attitude behind you and you'll find an overall welcoming city. by callsignhotdog (Mon 15th Apr 2019 1:35pm)

  • Standard tactics to discredit worker movements really. Perfectly reasonable people: "Hey we'd like to make enough money to maintain a decent standard of living for ourselves and our families, without breaking our bodies and dying of work-related diseases at 42" Bosses: "Gasp! The gist is "We're pro-EU, we'll push for a second referendum, we won't forget you like the Tories and Labour have, if you think you have to vote SNP because you've got no better choice, vote for us." Of course whether you believe any of that is up to you. by callsignhotdog (Fri 3rd May 2019 12:22pm)

  • It's definitely on the rise. Call me political but the rate of homelessness has gone up every year of Tory government and it started pretty much right after the Coalition took power. It's not hard to draw a connection between Government policy and homelessness. by callsignhotdog (Wed 8th May 2019 1:17pm)
  • Can't blame you, a lot of media presents a narrative that homeless people are all either faking it for "easy" money, or they deserve it because they're on drugs. The reality is very different but we go through our lives getting that nonsense pounded into our heads from all angles. by callsignhotdog (Wed 8th May 2019 1:15pm)

  • I imagine McGill's would be very interested in the takeover, and I imagine the Council would be in favour of a Scottish company taking over just for the optics of the thing, but you're right in that the competitions watchdog would have thoughts on that subject. Then again, competition in public transport is nonsense, you can't pick your travel by provider or price, you pick whichever bus takes you from Point A to Point B in the shortest time possible and pay whatever the operator of that bus route asks. by callsignhotdog (Fri 31st May 2019 10:49am)
  • I grew up in Manchester. Stagecoach or First pretty much came down to which area you lived in because they rarely ran services down the same streets. All the "competition" did for passengers is force you to buy two tickets when your trip involved using competing operators. by callsignhotdog (Fri 31st May 2019 10:57am)
  • People in Greenock (where they're headquartered) have told me that and I've even been told that they burned down their main local competitor's depot. Of course there is absolutely no evidence of this and I'm certain the owners and management of McGills would cooperate fully with any investigation, should such evidence appear. by callsignhotdog (Sat 1st Jun 2019 1:12am)

Since the hat you wear isn't a sign of your "class" anymore, taking your hat off similarly doesn't mean much anymore. Times change, customs change, it's a fascinating process. by callsignhotdog (Fri 7th Jun 2019 10:25am)
  • There's a few call centres around that are always hiring part time. Bonus points, you'll usually spend 4-5 weeks in training and getting paid for it before you have to take a customer call. Don't tell them you're only there for summer, just get the job and hand in your notice when you're ready. by callsignhotdog (Tue 11th Jun 2019 11:56am)
  • Depends if you get hired directly or by an agency I think. Off the top of my head, Esure and Direct Line, both on Cadogan Street, are pretty much always hiring. by callsignhotdog (Tue 11th Jun 2019 2:17pm)
  • I don't begrudge anyone for doing that. It's disposable work for not a lot of money. I knew a guy who worked in one for a year, then they refused him a holiday for a religious festival so he quit, then came back and reapplied. Sum total of it was he got a month off, then 5 weeks off the phones for training, and because the starting pay had gone up he actually got a raise too :D by callsignhotdog (Tue 11th Jun 2019 2:24pm)

  • Don't drive myself but I did pose pretty much this exact question to a driver once. What he told me was the costs are so high that doing it part time isn't really viable. Because even to uber you need to be fully licensed as a private hire driver you basically need to put in full time hours during peak times (i.e. evenings and weekends) to make enough profit to make it worth your while. Driving less or at lower demand times, you might just break even if you're lucky. It put me right off the idea. At this point if I was going to try and turn driving into a side hustle I'd look at delivery services, stuff that doesn't involve busing passengers around. by callsignhotdog (Mon 1st Jul 2019 12:32pm)

  • TLDR; Marches were rerouted after last year's spitting incident. The new route still went past a Catholic church. Council and Police imposed a rule of no playing within 100 metres of a church, several bands ignored this and one made a point of stopping in front of the church and kept playing despite being told to stop by police. Two young men allegedly assaulted and spat on a woman. It does look like we gave an inch and they took a fucking mile. A very reasonable request to reroute and not play outside Catholic churches was apparently too much to ask. Of course the trouble is that every restriction imposed just bolsters their claims of persecution and adds recruits. It's lose-lose really. by callsignhotdog (Tue 9th Jul 2019 7:09pm)

  • It sounds like a joke but live traffic management systems have been tested and are probably the future for large urban areas. Something like a satnav app but everyone has to use it, it simultaneously knows where everyone is and where they're going and can use algorithms to adjust routes. Send 70% of traffic down the main routes and divert the rest down less used routes, balancing traffic. Done well it could theoretically make a huge difference to rush hour congestion. That being said, the policy isn't to make driving easier, it's to encourage people out of their cars, so I expect that rush hour traffic is a feature rather than a bug at this point. by callsignhotdog (Wed 24th Jul 2019 3:44pm)
  • Yeah I've seen that one, it's like a wave, the stopping time of each vehicle stacks up and the traffic ends up compressing and expanding like an accordion. • If you're just after cheap furniture, Shelter or British Heart Foundation have branches all over the city. I don't know if you have Charity Shops in Canada but basically these charities take donations of old furniture, spruce them up and sell them for knock down prices. You can usually find a useful bargain if you're not picky of style (a lot of "grandma's house" style stuff to be found here). If you're looking for cool vintage stuff, the West End will probably be your friend. Bunker and The Real Deal are both in Finnieston and only one unit apart. It's still worth walking around and just making a note of who's hiring. House of Cashmere on Gordon Street is ALWAYS hiring but I suspect that's because they only offer minimum wage but demand experience. Someone else mentioned call centres and there are a ton of them around town. Esure, Direct Line and Teleperformance are all pretty much next door to each other on Cadogan Street. I will begrudgingly admit from experience that Esure isn't the WORST place to work, by call centre standards. Kura are also constantly hiring and seem to take on anyone who can show up with their shirt on the right way up. by callsignhotdog (Wed 28th Aug 2019 10:56am)

I used to work for esure and about half our call centre staff were Kura. They got worse pay and benefits than us, but as you say, better than nothing and it's not a scam. It's also sometimes possible to leverage your experience for a job directly with the client company. • Depends on the yield of the bomb, if it air-bursts or hits the ground, and which way the wind is pointing. Most modern nukes aren't as high a yield as during the Cold War, it's all about precision now rather than a dick-waving contest of who's got the most Megatons. Most likely scenario, Faslane is a crater, everything around it including Greenock and Port Glasgow are rubble, windows shatter in Glasgow and the cancer rate in Scotland doubles for the next 50 years. If it hits the ground though, fallout everywhere. If the wind is right the plume could hit Norway. by callsignhotdog (Thu 3rd Oct 2019 11:00am)
  • Is Glasgow itself worth a nuke? Well I guess you've got a couple of working shipyards that could be turned to war production. I think it depends if we're being nuked by someone with enough to spare. If they've only got a handful, Faslane is a prime target but Glasgow probably not. If it's America they've probably got the capacity to make sure every square inch of soil is covered by blasts. by callsignhotdog (Thu 3rd Oct 2019 11:28am)
  • You know, I'm generally in favour of disarmament, de-escalation and removing the nuke base from a population centre (seems to me like we've got much more isolated places we could service subs if we really have to have them) but now I'm wondering if it's worth the expense of moving them if Glasgow's going to get a visit from the Oppenheimer Fairy either way? by callsignhotdog (Thu 3rd Oct 2019 12:00pm)
  • Legally they don't even have to take English notes. They're not Government currency, really, they're promissory notes printed by an individual bank. It used to be every bank printed their own notes, and you'd have to take your notes to a branch of that bank to get them changed back to gold. Over time that got consolidated so now there's just the Bank of England in England and Clydesdale and BoS in Scotland. We all just agree that the notes are worth what they say, rather than going to the trouble of having them changed back into gold. I understand that Scottish notes are counterfeited more often because people aren't as familiar with them so it's easier to pass off forgeries in England. More often than not that's why an English shop refuses a Scottish note, like how a lot of shops don't take £50 notes from any country. You see them so rarely and they're so often forgeries that it's not worth the risk of taking them. It's very rare you'll find someone who just doesn't understand what Scottish notes are (although they do exist, my girlfriend got barred from an offies in London once because of that). by callsignhotdog (Fri 4th Oct 2019 2:13pm)

  • Need a bit more information to offer you any specific advice. Where are you coming from? Where are you going to be living in Glasgow? Where will you be commuting to on a daily basis? In terms of general advice - Glasgow's a lot like most UK cities, if you're from the UK you won't find services and such too different from what you're used to. The main ways of getting around are buses and trains. If you're travelling between the West End and Glasgow Central, you can use the Subway which comes regularly and has plenty of stops, but only one ring so if you don't live/work on that ring it's no use to you. There's also a fairly extensive network of cycle paths and a public bike hire scheme similar to most large cities. Glasgow is fairly compact so you'll usually find a way to commute anywhere within a reasonable time. How to manage yourself? People are friendly and generally helpful. Golden rule is Don't Be a Nobhead. If you treat people respectfully you'll receive the same treatment. There are also a couple of quirks of Scottish law that are distinct from the rest of the UK - The one that catches most visitors out is that you can't buy alcohol in shops after 10pm. This doesn't apply to bars and pubs but if you enjoy a drink at home, make sure you've got enough in to last you the night. Welcome to Glasgow! Hope it treats you as well as it's treated me! by callsignhotdog (Tue 15th Oct 2019 11:05am)

  • Bit of a catch-22 there. Another Tory government would do gangbusters for support for Independence, but then they wouldn't be suicidal enough to allow another indyref. If Labour get in they're gonna need SNP support and will probably give an Indyref in exchange. Of course too many votes for Labour and not enough for SNP and there won't be a mandate for another Indyref, so I guess Rock meet Hard Place. I figure Labour is going to need SNP support to form a Governemnt anyway so to me a SNP win is almost as good as a Labour one. The increased vote share for the Greens sends a clear message to the main parties that if they want your vote, they're gonna need to start taking the climate seriously. • Let's say you're a wealthy Chinese parent. English is a good language to have for international career prospects so it's good to send your kids to a British University. Of course you want it to be a good one, you immediately think Oxbridge. But hang on, international studenting isn't cheap, and yeah you're loaded but let's see what other options there are? We have a quick nosey at the university tables, scroll through the usual suspects... Glasgow eh? You look it up. It's an ancient institution, hundreds of years old in fact. Has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching, a bunch of people who got units of measurement named after them were affiliated with the university. Glasgow's pretty cheap to live in too, that's also important. And hey, they've already got a thriving Chinese community so you feel like your kid will fit in better. And you hear Scotland's a lot more welcoming to foreigners than some parts of England... Wrap that all up and it's starting to sound pretty appealing ain't it? by callsignhotdog (Thu 27th Feb 2020 8:50pm)

  • Ahh the old "I'm personally okay so there's not a problem" argument. There's about 60,000 students at UoG alone, and that's just one of the city's uni's. There aren't that many available flats in the city, and many of them don't even allow students to rent them. These Halls are often the only thing you can get in time for classes starting. It's a captive audience and these landlords take advantage by charging ludicrous rents for a shoebox room with a shared toilet. by callsignhotdog (Thu 2nd Apr 2020 4:15pm)

Problem with trains is there's probably not enough luggage space in the carriage for that many, and even if you find it it'll be out of your sight and accessible to anyone. I ended up taking a coach. For one thing, it's pretty cheap. You can pay a small extra fee for up to 6 bags in the luggage hold (nice and secure). Only downside is it'll be a long trip, 8-10 hours I think, but it's the easiest way to move two people and that many suitcases without renting a vehicle yourself. by callsignhotdog (Wed 20th May 2020 1:46pm)

  • To be fair, it's not like we're changing them every 6 months, this is stuff 150-200 years old or more. This isn't about pretending history didn't happen, it's acknowledging history happened. Leaving the names as they are is pretending that the bad parts of our history never happened. At the very least we need to put up some plaques acknowledging the context of what these men did. We should explain why these men who did these things are still being honoured with a street named after them. Or, change the names and put up plaques explaining what they used to be called, and why we changed them. by callsignhotdog (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 10:59am)
  • Removing somebody's name from a street doesn't mean "We're gonna pretend this never happened" - It's saying "This happened, and we don't think that's worthy of the honour of a street name anymore". Having a street, or a square, or a building named after you is something we do to honour somebody, and yeah sometimes our values change and stuff we used to honour just doesn't fly anymore. This works both ways, too - In the 50s Alan Turing was convicted of homosexuality and chemically castrated, now we put him on the £50 note. Ideally I'd like to see the names changed, to stop honouring those people, and the original names and the histories clearly recorded. Either a plaque under the new street name, or in a museum (that's what those are for after all). I'd also settle for keeping the names but adding plaques explaining the historical context, although it seems to me like if we did that, we're just admitting "Yeah this guy was a slaver but we're letting him keep his honours anyway". The only thing that WOULD be erasure of history would be leaving the names as they are and not adding anything to explain the context. by callsignhotdog (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 10:55am)
  • See you use the Nazi example, but crucially, Germany didn't keep stuff named after senior Nazis after the war. They changed the names because they didn't want to honour those men or their actions. The history is remembered in memorials, and taught in schools, so it won't be forgotten. by callsignhotdog (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 2:45pm)
  • The well funded museum (and clear markings directly beneath the new street signs) is exactly what I'm arguing for. I definitely don't want to see the names changed and nothing done to memorialise the reason why. Imo that would be worse than not changing them because at least if the names stay, people can freely point out the history of those names. by callsignhotdog (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 2:52pm)

  • I mean, it sounds like they were fair fights. Is that why the statue is in Glasgow? A monument to Square Goes? by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Jun 2020 11:36am)
  • > none of us are campaigning to have that removed. So far at least. Statues haven't been getting a lot of attention until just recently, I expect the Council will be reviewing which ones they have up. Here's the trouble with the history argument. Unless the Statue has a plaque that says "This guy was a right knob who thought women were too stupid to be educated" or "This guy got rich off slavery, but he built an opera house so we put a statue up for him", the statue isn't doing anything for history. Most of the time they either have no plaque, or the plaque actually talks about what a great person they were. Museums are for remembering the past, statues exist to honour people. If you leave a statue up, or name a street after a person, you're saying "We are proud of this person and what they did". If you pretend like they weren't a mysoginist or a racist, then you're censoring history. If you acknowledge that they were a mysoginist or a racist or a slaver, and leave the statue up, you're saying "We think this Mysoginist/Racist/Slaver deserves a statue". by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Jun 2020 1:01pm)
  • I'd be all for that, but we've had a century to start educating people and we haven't started yet. If we had then people might not have felt quite the same need to protest today. Stick them in a museum I say, somewhere out of the way but preserved for future posterity. by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Jun 2020 3:21pm)
  • > And as I’ve said before there are many companies through the years built on forms of slavery like Adidas, Mercedes-Benz and Hugo Boss to name a few profited from the Holocaust using Jews for free labour so should we all boycott them also? At least the owners of those companies faced consequences after the war. Most of these guys with statues died extremely rich and well respected (hence why they got statues put up of them) and never faced any consequences for their actions. Nobody protesting is saying "We must tear down everything they ever built with their dirty money!", they're just saying we shouldn't be giving some of them the honour of a statue in a prominent location. by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Jun 2020 4:15pm)
  • Your argument makes sense, if you accept the premise that the only people demanding these statues be removed are mobs of teenage Twitter users. It's very easy to make an argument when you dismiss the opposition like that. The fact is that people of colour in this country have spent **years** campaigning to remove these statues or at LEAST acknowledge the actual history behind them. In almost all cases they've been ignored. Glasgow city council has now announced they are undertaking a review of the various statues and street names in the city, with an eye towards how it reflects our colonial history. A democratically elected organisation, conducting a thorough review of the situation, and then acting on it. That's what we need, that's what people have been asking for, and that's what is now happening. So far the only "mob" removal of a statue was the one in Bristol, which people had tried to democratically have removed for years only to be vetoed by the organisation of local business owners who put it up in the first place. It's now been recovered and will be placed in the city museum. I won't even get into the Rowling stuff because you're clearly just trying to deflect the argument in a direction that suits you. by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Jun 2020 5:48pm)

  • I moved from Manchester to Glasgow about 4 years ago, never looked back. Glasgow and Manchester are really similar cities, sometimes I forget which one I'm in. The whole area has very similar vibes, might be because they have such similar histories. West End is the posh bit, East End is a bit more down to earth. Merchant City is like the Northern Quarter. Suburbs around the city are as varied as Manchester's are, you're guaranteed to find a place to live that suits you if you're prepared to look for it. Personally I lived in Finnieston in the West End for the first couple of years with a couple of roommates (it's a student area so lots of flatshares going), it's in walking distance of the city centre and the west end so it's a good place to explore Glasgow from. After that I ended up moving out to Rutherglen with my girlfriend cause we could get a house for less than a Finnieston flat and it's got good commuting links to Glasgow. by callsignhotdog (Wed 8th Jul 2020 10:24am)
  • Yeah fair point. Actually parts of the west end might be more NQ, Byres Road etc by callsignhotdog (Wed 8th Jul 2020 2:04pm)
  • There's certainly a need for rental or a rental-like system. I think most people who want shot of private landlords aren't expecting a world where everybody buys and just want it socialised, i.e. have the Government own properties that they rent out at cost. The current system works absolutely fine if everybody is acting in good faith, but this is where bad landlords are hurting not only tenants but other landlords, because there's so much abuse in the system that just rooting out the bad actors becomes less and less viable, and gradually the only solution becomes to throw out the whole system. Personally my landlord is excellent, as was my last one, but the three before that were all rotten, and I'd honestly be happier if the whole system were managed by the Government. At least then if my landlords are crap I can vote them out of office. by callsignhotdog (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:18pm)
  • Really I'd settle for any extra regulation, because the balance of power between landlord and tenant is so one-sided. Or if Social Housing was properly available, I'd know I'd never be homeless but I could, if I wanted, spend the extra to rent privately and have more choice over what kind of place I got. by callsignhotdog (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:52pm)
  • For you aye, but for every one of you there's another landlord who's figured out they can make more by giving their tenants the boot and relisting on Airbnb instead, and those tenants have no recourse, they just have to clear out. by callsignhotdog (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:20pm)

  • City hall has the powers to operate a bus service, in fact last year when First said they were going to be leaving the business, GCC was all set to make a bid on the franchise itself. Unfortunately the bastards changed their minds and stayed put. Fracnhises aren't forever though and eventually it's gonna come up for renewal. Make sure the Council knows you don't want them renewed, that you want a publicly owned alternative. In the meantime, get a bike if that's at all viable for you. Mine is literally faster than the bus during rush hour. I usually blow past the 21 around Shawfield Greyhounds and laugh the rest of the way home. by callsignhotdog (Fri 7th Aug 2020 10:45am)

Practice goes late into the night, keeping you up, then starts up early the next day so you don't even get to lie in, and God help you if you go out and ask them to keep it down. • It might still be shite but at least if GCC runs it we can vote out the people responsible. Have you ever tried making a complaint to First? They've got a monopoly on certain routes so for most people it's not like they can take their business elsewhere. by callsignhotdog (Mon 24th Aug 2020 1:19pm)
  • I said "On Certain routes". Where I live, I'm only served by First buses. I know plenty of other places that are the same. People don't make their travel decisions based on which company is best, they base it on "Which bus gets me where I want to go fastest" and while you might have a couple of different buses you could take, they're almost always the same company because bus companies carve out territories for themselves and stick to them. by callsignhotdog (Mon 24th Aug 2020 1:38pm)

  • Statues don't exist to teach history, that's what museums are for. Statues in public places are to honour people, to celebrate individuals or events that we think embody our society's values. If you moved the statues to a museum, and had an exhibit explaining what they did, why they had statues and why those statues were moved, that would be teaching history. As it is, there isn't even a plaque to explain it, so it's just celebrating them. by callsignhotdog (Thu 1st Oct 2020 5:43pm)

  • They were down for a good while, they only spiked up again when we started to reopen. One thing we can take heart in is that while the infection rate is higher, there death rate hasn't spiked. I'm not convinced Starmer's Labour would be that government, but I'm open to being pleasantly surprised. • Considering 7 years of inflation these figures would actually count as an overall council tax reduction, if everyone's wages were rising in line with inflation as they should. Seeing how little Council Tax contributed to the overall budget, it makes me wonder... would it not be possible to eliminate Council Tax? There'd have to be some rebalancing of the budget, no doubt, but before seeing these numbers I would have never even considered it, but this might be possible. by callsignhotdog (Wed 24th Feb 2021 10:25am)

  • Didn't say it would necessarily be a good idea, and the funding would need to be replaced by other revenue streams, be they business rates or central government funding. I'm not saying "Yeah we should definitely do it" but I always figured council tax would amount to something like 50%+ of the budget, 10% might just be possible to replace with other funding sources. It might well turn out to be unworkable, or that the costs would outweight the benefits, or just that the money could be used to greater benefits if used elsewhere than by giving residents a tax break, but I'd like to see a feasibility report on it at least. by callsignhotdog (Wed 24th Feb 2021 12:08pm)

It's literally the same shit they used to say about gay people, but now that explicit homophobia doesn't really fly with the mainstream anymore, they've switched targets. Measures like bathroom enforcement effectively just police gender roles, anyone trying to use a bathroom while not conforming sufficiently to gender stereotypes (which I've seen from Transphobes can be as minor as a woman being "too tall") results in being challenged to prove the shape of your genitals. Transphobia is a way to harm LGBTQ people as a whole, while enjoying much wider mainstream support. by callsignhotdog (Wed 21st Apr 2021 2:57pm)

The majority of people still haven't received even their first dose, the new variant is appearing to be somewhat resistant to current vaccines, and the more it's allowed to spread the more chance of a new variant appearing. We are absolutely not out of the woods yet and if we fuck it up now we'll lose all that progress and it'll all have been for nothing. • Kinda off topic but my Dad used to tell me this story from when he was in the Merchant Navy, it was the early 80s and his ship stopped in Greenock and they went in the first pub they found. After a few pints they tried to enter the pub across the street, only to be told they couldn't come in because they'd just been in the Celtic pub and this was the Rangers pub (may have been the other way around, this ws 40 years ago and my dad was pissed at the time). Apparently they weren't unkind about it, more of a "If you come in here we'll have to pick your teeth out of the furniture and nobody wants that" warning, so they just went back to the first pub and stayed there all night. by callsignhotdog (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 10:02am)

  • He never said it was like Syria or people fighting in the street. Just that he was refused entry to a pub because of the pub he'd just come from. He actually spoke very highly of Greenock, after they finished at the pub he got a deep fried pie that he hasn't stopped raving about since. by callsignhotdog (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 1:20pm)

  • I grew up in Manchester and it's basically identical climate to that. Lots of rain coming in off the Atlantic but not particularly cold, these days it doesn't even dip below 0 very often during winter. Summer averages around the 20c mark, high 20s during a heatwave. Honestly the rain is the most bothersome part of Glasgow's climate, if you can handle that it's very forgiving otherwise. by callsignhotdog (Mon 30th Aug 2021 1:34pm)

  • Most of my cycle route they've just marked the pavement as dual use for cyclists which honestly I appreciate, but I just wish they'd actually treat it like a cycle route and move the street furniture a bit. There's one spot where the pavement narrows and you have to negotiate a bus shelter and a signpost with barely enough room for your handlebars. by callsignhotdog (Wed 1st Sep 2021 7:18am)
  • What floor of the building are you on? Middle floors are generally easier to keep warm since you've got the flats below putting out heat and the flats above providing insulation. Those tenements have thick stone walls so they do actually hold heat pretty good, your pain points are gonna be the windows since double glazing is rare. Close your shutters if you have them, that should eliminate some of the draft and heat loss. If you want to still be getting some natural light, get some big sheets of clear plastic and gaffer tape them over the window bays, that will create a layer of insulating air between the flat and the window. Boom, bootleg double glazing. Another thing to consider is the door to the close, they're rarely weatherproof and tend to be drafty. Try and plug the drafts with a draft excluder. Finally, start triaging where you want to heat. Keep doors between rooms closed and focus on heating the rooms you spend the most time in, when you spend time in them. I'm gonna assume here that your heating is electric like most tenements. Electric heaters on a timer, have your bedroom heated up for an hour before your bed time and an hour before you wake up. For the bathroom, keep a regular schedule for when you want to shower (morning or evening as you prefer) and have a heater on timer for an hour before that. That way you're only heating one room throughout the day. These are all hard lessons learned in a badly insulated flat as a broke-ass student. May they serve you well. by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Sep 2021 11:18am)

  • I was referring to people rather than policy. As you say, everything is open and restrictions are more or less the same in both places, so if Glasgow isn't as lively as it used to be that suggests people are choosing to stay home. by callsignhotdog (Thu 30th Sep 2021 11:28am)

  • Have you seen what they're asking for? They just want to actually get paid overtime rates for overtime, that's such a basic-ass thing that I can't believe they didn't already have. If anyone's to blame for the strike dragging on, it's Scotrail for digging its heels in to deny its staff something so basic. by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 3:29pm)
  • The googling I did said it was abolished and put under GCC in 1975, then transferred to SL in 96. Either way the question is the same, why have it under South Lanarkshire Council and not GCC? by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 5:40pm)
  • Can't argue with that xD by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 6:14pm)
  • Right, but why did they specifically transfer Rutherglen away from GCC? by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 6:14pm)
  • That does make a certain sense actually by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 6:13pm)
  • Thank you! This is exactly the kind of detail I was looking for. For what it's worth I used to live under GCC and I can see why people wanted to move away from them, I was just curious about the specific reasoning. by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 7:19pm)
  • In a vacuum, that makes perfect sense. In an ideal world, everyone would be equal actors, entering into contracts on equal terms. The reality though, is that working is not really optional. UC isn't enough to live on, and will be taken from you if you refuse a job anyway. So you have to work. And since Scotrail is an effective monopoly within Scotland, if you're a train operator by trade, you have very few choices but to take the contract Scotrail offers you, no matter how unfair the terms might be. Yes there ARE other options, but not enough for everybody in the Scottish rail industry. Somebody is going to have to take that offer, whether they like it or not. The fact is that the balance of power between employee and employer is very skewed. We have to work, we can be fired without cause for the first two years, at any time. If the employer wants to change your contract, they can simply fire you and rehire you on the new contract, or you can just be jobless. The only counterbalance to this, is collective bargaining, to say "Listen boss, the lads and I have been talking and we all agree that 8 hours is an honest day's work, so if you want us to stay longer you're going to have to start paying us more. And if you refuse, we'll just down tools and you see how long all your managers and consultants can keep this service operating without us." by callsignhotdog (Tue 5th Oct 2021 9:44pm)

  • These building owners are getting right on my tits now. They refuse to invest in fixing their building but cry "woe-is-me" for how much they're spending on scaffolding to hold up their tumbledown ruin. I know they're just playing chicken with GCC, trying to get them to pay for refurbing the building but leave them owning it. Past time the government stepped in, took ownership away from them, and invested the money to make the building something useful to the community, before it's too late to save. Whatever else happens, the owners must NOT be allowed to profit from their bullshit anymore. If they demolish it, they can't be allowed to retain the land and build something more profitable on it. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 10:28am)
  • The owners are playing chicken with the Council. They refuse to repair it, insisting they need grants from the Council to do it. When the Council refuses and tells them to fix their shit, they do 1 of 2 things: 1. Make it uglier (scaffolding, massive adverts, etc) 2. Threaten to demolish it. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 10:41am)
  • They don't want to demolish it though, they want to profit off it and make the Council pay for repairs that are THEIR responsibility as OWNERS of the property. They want us to respect their rights to their private property, but they refuse to take any responsibility for it. Just want to be handed public money to repair their property so they can turn it into yet more luxury flats that nobody needs. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 11:35am)
  • Do CPOs account for the current condition of the building when determining value? Cause you could probably pick it up for a steal on that basis and then the old owners are still paying for the repairs by way of lost value. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 11:45am)
  • >then banish them from the city, Athenian-style I'll start gathering stones, you go find us a really big urn by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 2:46pm)
  • Give 'em £1 for the total state of the place, it probably costs more to refurbish than the value of the building at this point, so the market value is effectively zero. That way the buggers don't get to profit even slightly from their attempted extortion of the public purse. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 2:46pm)
  • Fortunately, there already exists a legal mechanism for [exactly this scenario](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_purchase_order) \- Preservation of historic buildings is one of the main reasons Compulsory Purchase Orders exist. They're certainly not some straightforward thing you can just do on a whim, but if GCC really wanted to sort this out, they could do it. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 3:37pm)
  • I said they should, don't really expect they will. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 4:50pm)
  • Yeah, we all know what SHOULD be done but they've failed to do it for over a decade at this point. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 4:49pm)
  • I'd be fine with the public footing the bill, provided it gets turned into something of use to the community. Hey how about some social housing in the city centre so people can actually live there? The most important thing for me though, is that whatever happens to the building, the current owners don't profit 1 goddamn penny off of their scrounging. Unless they pay to fix their building they can go hand. Let 'em pay to demolish it then CPO the land and build something useful there instead of whatever luxury flats the current owners want. by callsignhotdog (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 5:33pm)

  • With modern tech you could even have them go off-grid. Run power lines along all the main arterial routes, which power the buses and charge their batteries as they go. When they need to go off-route to service residential areas, they can leave the cable network and drive on battery power. Clean, reliable and flexible transportation without having to string power guides absolutley everywhere you want a bus to go. I've seen Germany are trialling something similar for lorries too, have one lane of the motorway electrified with overhead cables, lorries have constant power along the autobahn and then switch to batteries for the final mile or so to the depot. by callsignhotdog (Fri 12th Nov 2021 12:14pm)

  • To make that level of investment you first need to have the money available. It's all good saying a million quid now will pay back 5 mill in economic growth, but you have to actually have the million quid going in the first place. by callsignhotdog (Mon 6th Dec 2021 11:49pm)
  • I'm gonna bang on this every time it comes up - Trolleybuses. Easier to install than a bunch of rails everywhere, and if you want to put some small batteries in them they can even go off-grid for short distances. Full trams I know have better capacity so that should still be on the cards but in the short term, we can get trolleybuses going much faster. by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 1:24pm)
  • Problem with full electric buses is the cost and resources of batteries big enough to give them enough range. Ideally we want transport connected directly to the main grid, which means either trains, trams or trolleybuses by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 1:34pm)
  • Yeah there's definitely benefits to both. I think an unappreciated benefit of trams from a climate change standpoint is specifically the fact that they disrupt car traffic and make it less convenient to drive, which forces more people onto public transport. It's annoying but effective. There's definitely space for trolleys and trams, and having both gives important flexibility, but if we're in a hurry to get something set up, I say get the trolleys in first, and you can add rails later to turn trolleyways into trams wherever capacity demands. by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 2:14pm)
  • Batteries are heavy, so carrying them around uses up energy, so you need a bigger battery to carry enough charge to move the weight of the battery... you see where this is going. Their efficiency also degrades over time, so they need to be replaced more often, and fluctuates with the temperature. Up front costs are probably comparible / even favour the electric buses in a smaller fleet, but if you invest in the overhead cables, you save money on every bus you add to the network. by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 2:12pm)
  • Oh yeah the manufacture of batteries has a huge impact. Its necessary for many purposes but we should be trying to use mains alternatives wherever we can by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 2:43pm)

  • On the point of tram lines regenerating areas, I grew up in Manchester which when I was a kid had reduced its tram network down to a measly handful of lines. Over the last 10-15 years or so they started expanding the network again, putting lines back in and the economic benefits of the areas being newly served by the trams was obvious by callsignhotdog (Wed 15th Dec 2021 2:46pm)

  • Look right before crossing a road. A round bit of bread is called a roll, not a bun or muffin. Your outfit choice is fine for pubs and the more casual sort of bar. Some of the snootier nightclubs might have a dress code. Fortunately the area around the uni is crawling with that kind of place. Lot of students live in the vicinity of Byers Road which is close to the uni and close to all the bars and takeaway places. I personally lived in Finnieston for a couple of years which is walking distance to the uni and to the city centre, and I found it a nice place to live all round. Final point - Canadian and Scottish culture are similar enough that you won't experience that much culture shock. Golden rule is not to be a twat and everyone will like you fine. Also "Cunt" is not considered a serious curse here and is dropped quite casually. Depending on the tone and inflection it may even be used as a term of endearment. "This Cunt" is bad, while "Good Cunt" is among the highest praise you can receive from a Scotsman. by callsignhotdog (Mon 14th Mar 2022 8:20am)
  • I don't think it'd even look so bad if it was cleaned and maintained and had a fresh coat of paint. The problem with all these... let's call them "architecturally unique" council buildings is that no local council these days has the kind of money to maintain such a building properly. So they fall into disrepair, become an eyesore, and eventually some construction firm with ties to the Council gets a fat cheque to tear it down and build a cookie cutter glass and steel block that will have the exact same problem in 30 years time. by callsignhotdog (Mon 14th Mar 2022 4:09pm)

  • Tickets are released in blocks, they first release a block of cheap advanced tickets, once those sell out they release a block of more expensive tickets, and so on. So, the longer you wait (or the faster those cheap tickets sell out) the more you'll have to pay. However it's also not unheard of for the website to track your visits, identify when you're a return visitor and present higher prices because they assume if you've returned to the site you need to make the trip. Doesn't happen everywhere but it does happen. You can prevent any of that by using incognito mode on your browser when you buy your tickets. If all else fails, talk to your bosses. I assume that you're a remote worker who needs to come into the office once a week (since otherwise the company should be paying your travel), if you tell them that the cost of the commute has increased 300% and you can no longer afford the trip, they might be able to offer you travel expenses or find a way for you to not have to come in once a week. by callsignhotdog (Thu 31st Mar 2022 8:42am)
  • That's 49 hours a week so at £30k that comes out to £11.77 an hour, not great on its own. The accomodation might push it over since you're saving on your rent, but you definitely want that in your contract otherwise they can just withdraw it at any time. I'd also be concerned about having my employer control my accomodation, makes it harder to leave if they're shite. I'd also be leary of only getting 1 full day off a week, that's really going to pile up over time and increase the chance of burnout. If you really need the money then take it but I'd not stop looking for better. by callsignhotdog (Thu 31st Mar 2022 9:16am)

[Glassdoor has an analysis of average salaries in Glasgow for this job](https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Salaries/glasgow-electrical-engineer-salary-SRCH_IL.0,7_IM1145_KO8,27.htm) \- The average would be £38k a year. The lowest would be £27k but that assumes a standard 8 hours per day, 5 days per week job. You're being asked to work more than that. As I said, the accomodation may add to the overall value of the payout (rent can easily be 700/month depending on where you live, so if you're not having to pay that, it's a pretty good deal) but you **must** get that written into your contract. by callsignhotdog (Thu 31st Mar 2022 9:40am)

My company actually opened its Glasgow office specifically because of the number of unis, gives a wider pool of graduates to recruit. by callsignhotdog (Wed 13th Apr 2022 8:05pm)

Staying open means paying more for staff to be there while not making much money. The exception is generally supermarkets which tend to stay open later for people who do their essential shopping after work (or pop in for a couple of things after they finish work). by callsignhotdog (Thu 26th May 2022 10:44am)

  • More roads never ease traffic in the long term. There's a very well recorded phenomenon called Induced Demand. You build more roads, traffic reduces, so more people start driving until the new roads are just as congested as the old ones. Now you've got a bunch of expensive new roads to maintain, a bunch more cars spewing out emissions, you flattened a bunch of your city to build it all, and the traffic situation is no better. by callsignhotdog (Fri 4th Nov 2022 7:52am)
  • There are absolutely people who don't seek medical care because the system is so overloaded they can't easily access help, and if we recruited more doctors those people would probably seek help, so yes in that sense more doctors do induce extra demand. Except people NEED to see doctors, they don't NEED to drive. When the roads are full, people can be redirected to more efficient and environmental modes of transit. When people can't access the healthcare they need, they can die. That isn't something we should accept and it's in incredibly poor faith to compare something like that to people having to sit in some traffic or take a bus to work. by callsignhotdog (Fri 4th Nov 2022 11:01am)
  • Yes there is a cap to induced demand, there are only so many commuters so you could eventually build enough roads for everyone who might use them. But private cars are incredibly space inefficient. To build enough roads to outstrip all possible demand of the entire population, you'd have to basically bulldoze everything that wasn't a business and replace it with roads and car parks, which makes it impossible for anyone who can't drive to get anywhere. Alternatively, you take the tens of millions it'd cost to build that extra road infrastructure, you put that money into alternative forms of transport, which lets you move significantly more people around for the same money and space used. As a bonus, that takes cars off the road which means people who still need to drive experience less traffic. And you achieve all that without bulldozing through huge chunks of the city centre, displacing homes and businesses. You're right about one thing though, the public transport in Glasgow isn't good enough and it's not improving fast enough. That doesn't mean the solution is more motorways, the solution is investing in more public transport. by callsignhotdog (Fri 4th Nov 2022 12:32pm)

It's a nice affordable luxury, I used to get milk once a week with my big shop but it started tasting a bit suspect towards the end of the week. This way I get fresh milk twice a week and I can definitely taste the difference. • Have you seen the LEZ requirements? Virtually anything from the last 15 years will meet them. The main impact is, ironically, on older diesel buses. Its about air quality not vehicle numbers. If you want to reduce vehicle numbers you need a fuck load more public transport. Buses and trains and trams so regular that you don't even need to check the schedule, just walk to the nearest stop and know you're never waiting more than ten minutes for a ride. by callsignhotdog (Tue 17th Jan 2023 8:34pm)

  • Yeah I was aiming at the guy. LEZ isn't going to impact the numbers of people coming into town. As for demand, transit is a bit weird, people generally want to go places, so you can induce demand by increasing the capacity of a particular method. You build more roads, more people drive. Run more buses, more people use that. by callsignhotdog (Tue 17th Jan 2023 8:53pm)
  • How much nicer does Buchanan Street look with all those plants along it? It's practically a park. by callsignhotdog (Wed 18th Jan 2023 9:35am)
  • I'm all for stuff like this but if you're going to remove car infrastructure, you need to increase the alternatives. The demand for people wanting to get places generally remains static, so if you want to reduce one method you need to get more people into the other modes of transit. by callsignhotdog (Mon 30th Jan 2023 5:33pm)

  • I visited home in Manchester last weekend. It went through a similar transformation over the last 10-15 years, extending its limited central tram network out to the various suburbs and satellite towns. It's a really great system and a definite improvement on what there used to be. Would love to see it come to pass here (and would especially love to see a tram line through Rutherglen, the bus links to Glasgow are rotten cause of the traffic). by callsignhotdog (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 8:32pm)
  • Broadly any measures that reduce car use are good, but the public transport infrastructure to replace it just isn't there. Without that, it just becomes another tax that people can't really avoid. by callsignhotdog (Mon 27th Feb 2023 11:59am)
  • It's essentially a "Vice Tax" in the same way as the sugar tax or alcohol minimum unit pricing. Discourage a behaviour by making it more expensive. It's a popular tactic for governments as it shows you're taking action without really costing anything, bar a bit of up front investment to set up the payment system. After that, it's revenue generating which is a very easy sell for cash strapped authorities. Without that proper investment though, it's only half a job. I can only hope that this money might be funnelled into a metro system or expanding the subway or more bus lanes or, fuck, anything that makes it easier to get into Glasgow. by callsignhotdog (Mon 27th Feb 2023 3:02pm)
  • You're pitching a luxury service (Haircut with the fancy side service) but planning to do it in a very cheap way (pot noodles and microwave meals out of a 12v mini fridge). You're basically going for the worst of both worlds. People who want "an experience" will be put off by the cheapness of the offering, and people who want a simple haircut will be put off by the whole food gimmick. Pick one and run with it. Given the size of the space you have to work with, I'd recommend you go for the simple option. Decent quality haircuts done quick with a minimum of fuss. You don't have the space to compete with the pint-and-a-haircut boutiques. by callsignhotdog (Mon 27th Feb 2023 10:54pm)

  • The bus was overtaking the cyclist, the bus driver was the one in control of that situation. Why would it be better for the cyclist to merge out in front of the bus? That makes no sense whatsoever. There was plenty of space for the cyclist in that lane, why would he move further out and block anyone from overtaking him? The bus driver could have either neatly overtaken, or fallen back behind the cyclist if he really needed to be in that lane. There was no need to try and force his way into the lane like that. by callsignhotdog (Mon 15th May 2023 12:34pm)

  • Nah you're both equally on the hook, Council doesn't want to get involved in Flatmate disputes like this, all they care about is getting paid. Generally, the consequences of not paying make it so that gritting your teeth and paying the whole thing is usually the least bad option. If I were you, I'd see if you can get any discounts, pay whatever is being asked, keep a record of every payment, start looking for a new flatmate (cause honestly, can you really rely on a guy who'd stick you with that bill so he can go to a f\*\*king festival?) and once you're rid of the freeloader, take him to Small Claims for the amount he owes you in back Council Tax. If he won't pay up you can at least screw with his credit and generally make his life a hassle which ought to give you a little satisfaction. by callsignhotdog (Mon 21st Aug 2023 3:31pm)
  • Don't hold too high a hope of getting paid, but if he refuses you can get a judgement on him and that'll really ruin his day next time he tries to get a new phone contract or sign up for broadband or something. • You might sometimes get a bit of pressure from a particularly steep bit of motorway but I don't think there's any motorway where the slope is so steep you should be experiencing that level of pain just from the elevation change. Motorways tend to avoid that kind of slope by design. If it started since you were on a flight I'd get in to see a doctor, you might have picked up an inner ear infection or suffered some pressurisation damage that's making you particularly sensitive to the pressure change. by callsignhotdog (Tue 29th Aug 2023 10:11am)
  • Statistically, trans people are far more likely to kill themselves while on NHS waiting lists than they are to decide they no longer "feel trans" (and statistically most people who detransition do so because of outside pressures, like lack of healthcare or overt transphobia). GPs absolutely prescribe psychiatric medicines. Anti-depressants are ROUTINELY prescribed by GPs, often while the person is on a waiting list for therapy. They also routinely prescribe the exact same hormones that Trans people are forced to go to a specialist for. It's a massive waste of the NHS' time and money, purely because of this weird fallacy some people have that people are transitioning for fun or something. by callsignhotdog (Tue 29th Aug 2023 10:51am)

  • It's an English thing. In Scotland your water use is unlimited and paid as part of your Council Tax (you'll see it itemised on your Council Tax bill). In England it's based on usage. If you have a meter you'll be billed for what you use, but some older houses don't have a meter and instead get billed a flat rate based on the "Rated usage", basically an estimate of how much water a house that size should use. When it comes up you generally see people recommend getting a meter over the rated usage because most people will save money that way. by callsignhotdog (Thu 31st Aug 2023 1:00pm)

  • I drive into Glasgow once a week or so for work, even I would support a Congestion charge but for the love of all that's holy give me a better option. I started driving because the bus service was just so aggravating. The article mentions an actual Regional city council and I'd be on board with that. Give us a joined up public transport strategy. Expanded, publicly run bus service and start building a goddamn tram network already. I'm fine with discouraging driving, even as a driver I'm okay with that, but you have to make the public alternatives better, otherwise you're just punishing people for trying to get to work in whatever way they can rely on. by callsignhotdog (Sat 9th Sep 2023 11:08am)
  • When I'm driving home from England I hit the "Welcome to South Lanarkshire" sign almost an hour before I actually get home. It's very jarring. The trouble with splitting it up though is that the further south you go the less populated it is. and you quickly start to run out of major towns once you get south of Larkhall or so. by callsignhotdog (Sat 9th Sep 2023 11:27am)

Should buy you about 3-6 months of peace before they start sending you threatening letters that will heavily imply that you're under some sort of formal investigation and about to receive a visit.
