  • Are you into any sports? A number of team sports train in traditional "after work" hours which should have you finishing up just before you start work and then it's either Saturday or Sunday afternoons for games which should give you a chance to get some kip before you play. by cardno85 (Tue 14th May 2019 10:37am)
  • Food is definitely Scottish, there's a lot of Corsican stuff on the wall, and they game a petanc (think that's the spelling) court out the back, but food and music is certainly Scottish. by cardno85 (Sun 14th Jul 2019 4:13pm)
  • Don't mind the slimy as much as the ones that say "gel" so you hit the top with a bit more force and you get covered in watery alcohol. Out shopping with a top like I've just got out of the garage on a Saturday night. by cardno85 (Fri 9th Oct 2020 5:23pm)
  • Really sorry, upvoted before I checked it out and work has been a shitshow this week. Thank you for letting me know. Would offer gold but I don't have any. by cardno85 (Sat 16th Jan 2021 7:22pm)
  • Bins are a big one, but let's be honest, most people don't care about what goes in what bin. When I'm out walking the dog I see loads of black bin bags with general rubbish in blue bins. In some areas the bin men do a job of checking, but in the schemes they just take it and take the contaminated load to general waste. 3 weekly uplift is fine if you have public buy-in but when a large portion of the council area population just see a bin as a bin and the bin men are not in a position to challenge it, they aren't paid enough, the issue will never be resolved. They are putting the cart before the horse here by setting up a sensible rota of bin collections before the majority of the public are willing to do it [disclaimer: taking about house collections, not flats, flat collection is just a mess] by cardno85 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 6:31pm)
  • Good old Q-Mark where you could get cheap football tops from last season and really terrible PC games (there was plenty more, but those stuck out in my mind) by cardno85 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 4:37pm)
  • I tried to take the dog up Hurlet hill a few weeks back and it was pretty dire. Rubbish everywhere, had to climb over dumped furniture to get to the relevant start point, then encountered a forestry sign in which someone had painted "I'd turn back if I were you"... And we did by cardno85 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 4:41pm)
  • I actually emailed my councillor about this. The logic is that so much waste in green bins could be recycled falls on it's face when we see how little plastic can actually be recycled here. Obviously they've just looked at the bin contents and thought "oh that's full of plastic" but fail to realise the sheer volume of packaging that is not recyclable in Glasgow. Did get a reply that she would pick up with the relevant teams, but being realistic I doubt my email will actually change recycling infrastructure in the city. by cardno85 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 4:53pm)
  • Should have grabbed a couple of bags and put them around the wheels, might have got picked up... But more likely just run over. by cardno85 (Fri 26th Mar 2021 12:49pm)
  • We used best paw forward back when we got our rescue and it was a good grounding, also did the dogs trust course. That being said she was a new rescue at that point and a lot of her personality hadn't come out at that point. As ongoing training we love the online stuff from absolute dogs (absolute-dogs.com), the trainer's are full on cringe but their method of training through games is lots of fun for Bailey and us. by cardno85 (Fri 26th Mar 2021 12:46pm)
  • As a few folks have said, Partick market is on tomorrow at Mansfield park. That being said, be prepared to queue, every time I go past the line miles long, not sure how fast it moves though. by cardno85 (Fri 9th Apr 2021 9:59am)
  • I found a good few options on the all trails app for walking with the dog. Worth a shot as it's free. by cardno85 (Mon 12th Apr 2021 11:20am)
  • I think in many cases you are quite right, but let's not forget that newer (you can do PCP on used and nearly new cars, I have a 2015 Polo) will likely have better mileage and not be as likely to break down. That's my main draw for PCP, get a reasonably new car with low monthly payments, then swap it for the same. I'm not that into cars, just want something for the weekly shop and the commute to Edinburgh when that starts again. So comfortable, cheap, and reliable means PCP ticks the boxes. As I say, I'm not really into cars, so if I'm actually making a terrible mistake I'm very happy to be corrected! by cardno85 (Mon 12th Apr 2021 5:54pm)
  • Were they battered salt and chili chips? If not, they were unlikely to be the best...jist sayin. by cardno85 (Mon 12th Apr 2021 5:57pm)
  • Aw, that's the stuff, we had a Chinese here in the South side that did them for a while, got me hooked, then just removed them from the menu. Keep trying to find somewhere else that does them in my delivery range. by cardno85 (Mon 12th Apr 2021 6:10pm)
  • Hard to say mate, everyone's taste is different. I like proper shitey Glasgow Chinese takeaways for my Saturday take out. I like the ruby on PRW and that's normally my go to. If I was going for authentic, amazing Chinese food I'd probably dine in as a treat. by cardno85 (Mon 12th Apr 2021 8:26pm)
  • Well this thread makes me feel a lot less guilty for keeping my dog on lead all the time. There are times as a dog owner you think it's not fair on them nor being able to run about. But I know that, despite training, treats, and a fluffy toy in my pocket, if she's decided not to come back, she's not coming back. So off lead time is limited to fenced dog areas, run free fields (I think there another company dodside or something like that) and the garden. On lead the rest of the time. by cardno85 (Sun 18th Apr 2021 9:33am)
  • West of Scotland cricket club, across from Partick train station. Pretty much anything outside the oval is a beer garden, and drinks are pretty cheap. Plus you can watch a bit of cricket of that floats your boat. by cardno85 (Sun 18th Apr 2021 9:37am)

  • Thanks both, good to know! I normally keep an eye on it online when it's coming up, but just in case I forget! by cardno85 (Tue 20th Apr 2021 12:41pm)
  • I totally thought sunny Govan was that mad nighttime radio station that had various "square go" phone ins and played non stop happy hardcore. Turns out it's not that and, on tuning in, is actually really good. Better donate! by cardno85 (Fri 7th May 2021 12:35pm)
  • While it might not be the best idea of you are looking for the current issue and you need it straight away, I asked my local newsagent about rugby world magazine and he ordered it in for me every month. In fact he started getting more than one as it was selling. by cardno85 (Sun 23rd May 2021 1:19pm)
  • It was definitely kicking about but I think there were concerns around how broad it was and whether existing legislation should be tightened and enforced instead. I would prefer if it was more around the inconvenience to pedestrians, cyclists, buggies and wheelchairs and not just "fine anyone on the kerb". A lot of the roads in Glasgow suburbs have wide pavements and narrow roads, if people don't park on the pavement the road is unusable, and parking on the pavement leaves plenty of room for people to get past so to enforce a broad rule would be difficult there. by cardno85 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 5:54pm)
  • Most car parks I go to have a 2-3 hour limit... by cardno85 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 6:01pm)
  • This is great!! Love looking at where I live that just edges the boundary out in an odd direction as of Renfrewshire just said "nah, you can keep it Glasgow" surrounded on 3 sides by council border... by cardno85 (Thu 10th Jun 2021 4:44pm)
  • Second this in terms of cost. Although buses will be impacted by traffic in ways that trains won't. I used to try and get the 6.15/20am bus which got me to outside Edinburgh by around 8. But there are earlier buses depending how flexible your employers are. Same applies on the way back, you really want to be heading out of Edinburgh no later than 4 keeping in mind you still need to get back from Buchannan St if you want to be home at a reasonable time. by cardno85 (Sun 4th Jul 2021 5:12pm)
  • It's all about taking the birthday week off! First thing I do when the new holiday calendar opens up each year! by cardno85 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 12:38pm)
  • It's so much more! 3 test starters and 2 on the bench is pretty much unheard of, given there were 3 Scottish players in the touring squad the last 2 tours and now 3 starters. If memory serves me correctly the last time a Scottish players started a test was Tom Smith way back in 2001. So it's a big jump. by cardno85 (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 12:48pm)
  • It's like the one thing even 3 year olds know that you stop at a red light. I once jumped a red in town by accident (very rarely drive in town and only ended up there because I took the wrong road in the first place) and I was para for days that the polis were going to come and arrest me! by cardno85 (Thu 29th Jul 2021 3:12pm)

  • Having had a number of free papers in the past in the evening I wonder if policy has changed. Used to be the newsagent cut out the barcodes to go back to the publisher/printer for refund and were responsible for getting rid of the main paper. by cardno85 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 6:40am)
  • We have done quite well with radishes and courgettes, the issue we have is with an abundance of slugs and snails which seem to decimate any young leaves really early on. Not keen on using the blue pellets because I don't want them to get in the dogs paws so I'm somewhat limited to raised pots. But if anyone has good animal friendly slug management tools let me know! by cardno85 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 2:10pm)
  • Just curious, how do you like your carrots in mince? I like either rounds or half rounds so you notice them there, but some folk go for a dice (which I would do for Bolognese), any preference? Also, good on you sticking up a recipe, it's not how I do it, but mince is all about personal taste. by cardno85 (Fri 6th Aug 2021 2:37pm)
  • Tell me about it, I was up until just short of midnight having pre-holiday beers and almost spewed on the train to Aberdeen on Wednesday! Although my theory is that I am just so poor on lack of sleep any more, I mean I can sit and day drink quite happily to a considerable amount more than I had on Tuesday night, and then be ok the next day, but if I have even an average amount of beer after midnight I need a day in bed! by cardno85 (Fri 20th Aug 2021 6:53pm)
  • That would be my tack on this one, explain that you are not comfortable being back in the office and, where possible, the reasons why, but put it to them why they see it as essential for you to be in the office full time. Obviously we don't know what the OP does, but assuming they have been working from home all this time (again, assuming without issue) why do the business *need* them all back into the office? by cardno85 (Fri 20th Aug 2021 7:02pm)
  • So it's give or take 13PLN, will get you one craft/regional beer, almost 2 standard beers in a normal pub or 3 medium beers in the pijalnia places. by cardno85 (Thu 9th Sep 2021 12:35pm)
  • I didn't hear anything in Penilee, maybe my telly was too loud. Were you listening for it or was it just obvious sitting about the house? by cardno85 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 11:08am)

  • Changs on PRW landed recently on Just Eat and it was pretty good a couple of weeks ago. Depends what you like though. Or Wok This Way's Turbo Fried Rice is amaaaazing! by cardno85 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 1:38pm)
  • I totally didn't think about the fact they weren't recorded delivery. The letter itself makes it all very serious if you don't respond so I would assume there would be some follow up but it might be too much hassle for them, given the backlog in cases already. When I got mine a couple of years back I went for it, but more out of a curiosity of how the system works. So on the other side of this, if you don't have anxiety issues, it's worth going along just to see how it all works. by cardno85 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 1:35pm)
  • Has anyone flown to other parts of the UK recently? I've got a trip to Birmingham for work tomorrow so wondering if domestic flights require arriving a lot earlier or can I just rock up an hour before like normal? Aware there are no locator form or test requirements for internal flights, but wondering if the other flights are holding things up for others. by cardno85 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:58am)
  • Cheers, I'll go an extra half hour early, worst comes to worst I can get some work done in departures. by cardno85 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 9:47am)
  • Probably just a coffee for me, although would be a more fun trip with a few points beforehand! Thanks for the info! by cardno85 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 9:59am)
  • Good to know, cheers. by cardno85 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 12:13pm)

  • I'll give it a go and report back, thank you! by cardno85 (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:44pm)
  • Just curious, do you have one particular site that you use or a few? I normally use haypp but delivery can take a while so sometimes go looking if I've run out. by cardno85 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 12:15pm)
  • Just curious if you found the document scanning thing to be on mega zoom? Tried it over the weekend and I couldn't scan my driving license because if I held it at a reasonable distance it wouldn't focus on the card, but leaving it on the floor while I stood on a stool had it in focus but too small to make out details. by cardno85 (Mon 4th Oct 2021 1:12pm)
  • Totally off-topic, but what's the milkman shifts like? Pure curiosity as my only experience of them is that my clean bottles go out in the evening and I have milk in the morning, almost like magic to me! by cardno85 (Tue 5th Oct 2021 11:06am)
  • Thanks for the insight! I always like driving at night when there's no-one about, feels much more relaxing than sitting on the M8 at rush hour! by cardno85 (Tue 5th Oct 2021 1:34pm)
  • I'm sure I saw that on some news report or other too, did a lazy search on BBC but couldn't find it though, must have been ages ago. by cardno85 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 11:31am)
  • Your point around too big or small is a really interesting one and I wonder if there would ever be a way to right size a council. Although that's a doubt because of the party politics involved. Obviously there's the argument that because a number of affluent areas fall outside of GCC tax remit, but people living there are likely to work and socialise in Glasgow, it creates a disconnect in money coming into the council and what it has to spend within the city boundaries in terms of business and leisure usage. On the other hand, I vaguely remember Strathy council being thought of as completely inefficient and too big to effectively manage. So what would work? Obviously the concern of bringing in a wider Glasgow Metropolitan Area council would be that those who have their own council now would feel they would be neglected by one major council that would likely focus on the City Centre. And the current issues with GCC and the bureaucracy and inefficiency don't paint a great picture of it managing even more of an area. And really, is there any motivation within the political circles to change anything, seems like it's an attitude of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and don't fix it if it's broke either" from all levels so will anything ever really be done? by cardno85 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 12:08pm)
  • Similar in the Thornwood (before it was done up), guy came in with some basic stuff to flog, and mentioned he was hitting up M&S at Crow Rd for steaks if anyone wanted any. Came back in with half price steaks for loads of people about an hour and a half later. by cardno85 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 3:22pm)
  • I started with the best of intentions doing them twice a week, but kept forgetting, then I couldn't be arsed. Should start again...sounds like the gym to be honest. by cardno85 (Fri 8th Oct 2021 2:49pm)
  • It's not entirely unreasonable, but given it's a job where everyone knows there's travel involved, would it not be prudent of the Scottish Government as a whole to buy/build/long term lease accommodation that is available to travelling MSPs or would that take too long to balance the books? by cardno85 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 10:28am)
  • Wholesale Domestic, Hillington Road Basically a big bathroom supermarket, they will sort you out a full suite but they do bits and pieces too. by cardno85 (Mon 11th Oct 2021 5:27pm)
  • This is good advice right here. It covers most metered on-street parking bays in Glasgow, and if your are taking longer than you expected you can extend the time within the app. Not sure if it's council run, but it's a great app. by cardno85 (Fri 15th Oct 2021 1:30pm)
  • Not just McDonalds, but other fast food places (looking at you Tim Hortons) seem to have issues with getting the complete order to us. Right pain when you are hungover in the morning and just want something quick for breakfast and half your stuff is missing. I know you can get a refund, but that doesn't exactly help much when you are starving. The shining light in all this though is it led me to ordering rolls and breakfast wraps off local cafes who get the orders right, and, through some sort of delivery magic, still have runny yolks when they arrive. Seriously, next hangover look for local cafes with a decent rating...miles better! by cardno85 (Mon 18th Oct 2021 4:36pm)
  • Agreed there, we didn't have a car for 4 years staying in Thornwood because we didn't need one (and, honestly, where would we have parked it!), bus stop was serviced by 3 buses which all went through the west end and to the city so there wasn't much of an issue with wait times, walking distance to the subway/train (or a very short bus ride), supermarkets, cafes, pubs, wee shops all within walking distance. Moved to a house and life would be much more difficult without a car. There's a train that goes into the city centre or Paisley quickly, but there are the issues with weekend trains being hourly and they don't stop as close to supermarkets for the weekly shop. by cardno85 (Thu 21st Oct 2021 10:58am)
  • What?? I normally skip intros so can't say I noticed, what is the difference and, somewhat more importantly, why did they change it? by cardno85 (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 9:48am)

  • Just to jump in on that first point, I made the mistake after lockdown of going straight back into the gym at the weights I was using previously and ended up with muscles so sore the next couple of days that I couldn't go back and it sapped my motivation. Better to go light, go often, and work your way up than going to hard, hurting yourself and not going back. by cardno85 (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 11:02am)
  • Ahhh, I thought they changed the intro music for the whole series on Netflix and was getting pretty confused why. by cardno85 (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 12:17pm)
  • Would have been funny seeing them all doing to slosh to something else though, right mind boggler. I do wonder if it's down to rights there, I remember them saying on the Scrubs Podcast that streaming versions have different songs because the rights included broadcast and home media but not streaming. It's another one which is a nightmare because the original soundtrack worked well with the stories. by cardno85 (Fri 22nd Oct 2021 1:44pm)
  • Just noticed the bin strikes coincide with my green bin collection and no way will it hold 6 weeks of rubbish, anyone know if the tips will be open during the strike or should I double bag and pop in the shed? Just to be clear, not anti strike in any way, but keen to do what I can to not have bin bags torn open all over the street by foxes and seagulls. by cardno85 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 8:41am)
  • No juicy info I'm afraid, just getting round to checking the proposed strike dates from the media (1st to 7th I think) against my collections and saw it was a green bin collection that Sunday (brown too, but that will last 2 weeks longer when it's not summer). by cardno85 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 9:56am)
  • No idea, they didn't run a catch up after COVID suspensions so I assumed not. Would be nice if they do though. by cardno85 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 11:14am)
  • I totally get what you are saying here, my wee brother bought a great wee flat around Govan (think it's technically Craigton, next to the big Asda) and it's a nice quiet street, really handy for public transport and getting around the city. He loves it, even if it's a change from staying in the West End. It might not be super fancy, but as a starting point that will likely be a bit cheaper and potentially less competition it could work out in some of the areas around the hospital. Important to check out the close and have a walk around in the evening to get a feel for what it would be like living there. by cardno85 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 2:07pm)
  • I'm with Campbell & Galloway next to Ibrox, but haven't had to book an appointment for a while\*touch wood\*. Nice bunch of folk there though :) by cardno85 (Wed 27th Oct 2021 2:34pm)

  • I am curious how the organisation of this works, like if I ring 999 will I get someone with a police helmet turn up at the door, or are outside forces just there for presence and crowd roles so PS can continue day to day operations? by cardno85 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 9:05am)
  • Not sure what the script is once a strike starts if it's for a set period, if an offer comes in through the week (thinking once bins start impacting surrounding areas of COP) can they just stand down the strike? by cardno85 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 2:44pm)
  • Read somewhere that GPs are often inundated the day after St Patrick's Day because people have been going hard on the Guinness and end up with black poos because of the iron, might be rubbish though. by cardno85 (Mon 1st Nov 2021 2:43pm)
  • Given they are two small dogs (are they in carriers or just on lead?) you could probably get away with whatever your local private cab company is if you book in advance and make them aware you have animals with you. That being said, I've found waits for local taxis lately to be really long, even when pre-booked, so if I were you I'd shell out for a black cab which should be the most reliable at the moment. by cardno85 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 2:03pm)
  • Southside have been doing that if you pre-book on the app, they basically send the call out about 5 minutes before the time you booked for which hardly helps when wait times are 20-30 minutes. I thought the whole process was meant to be that the drivers accept it when you book it for the time in advance? by cardno85 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 2:08pm)
  • Because I've got a big-ish dog I always use black cabs when taking the dog places I'm not driving myself. Just the nature of the cars means they will have a larger proportion that will take a dog as it can just sit or lie on the floor. For where I live I've found they arrive a lot quicker too. They have higher fares of course, but happy to pay that for peace of mind that a car will come as expected and won't have a hassle with the dog. by cardno85 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 2:34pm)
  • Sorry, should have put that in. You can get the app which is just called "Glasgow Taxis" (yellow square with a black G in it), I like that because I can have my card saved in there and some journeys they'll do a fixed price from the app without the meter so can be cheaper. You can add "passenger with animal" in there too. Alternatively, you can give them a ring on 0141 429 7070. by cardno85 (Tue 2nd Nov 2021 3:25pm)
  • How all went well with the jags for the wee ones! Lovely of you to check back in! by cardno85 (Sat 6th Nov 2021 11:25pm)
  • I was doing a litter pick in a local park and a councillor was there explaining that there are studies in various countries that show that fewer bins leads to less rubbish. Now I don't doubt those studies exist, but I think it's been just blindly accepted by the council that getting rid of bins will solve the rubbish problem. Now I haven't read the studies, it was a casual chat in a park, but I am imagining that they have got it backwards, that work was done to educate people in disposing of rubbish responsibly (taking recyclables home, not bringing as much rubbish in the first place, etc.) meaning less rubbish in the bins and therefore less need for bins. But would be keen if anyone on this sub happens to have heard of any of these studies? by cardno85 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:06am)
  • Worth noting that with it being on Amazon Prime, some pubs might not have that as part of their package. O'Neills, Waxy's, Walkabout, etc. will likely have it, or if you have a place you normally like to watch sport, check out their facebook page as they'll probably mention if they have the game on there. by cardno85 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 11:11am)
  • That is my thinking, the countries the councillor used as an example were South Africa and Norway who reduced the amount of public bins and residential bin collections. Now, I might be very wrong here, but I can't imagine councils in those countries saw a load of bins overflowing and thought "yeah, let's just get rid of them and the problem goes away", I am thinking it started with, as you mention, a cultural and educational shift which meant the bins weren't being used as much so it became logical to remove them. Just from my own experience living in Kraków they have so many more bins than we have in Glasgow, pretty much every traffic junction with a crossing, all bus/tram stops, and they are regular along pavements. As I would often use their inbuilt ashtrays at the time, I saw inside most were close to empty. Now I'm not sure if that's down to them being emptied more often (funnily enough you don't pay much attention to refuse collection times when bins aren't overflowing) but I would have said there would have been a good case there to remove some bins. When, in Glasgow, you only have a few big bins that are overflowing, I can't see the logic in removing them. by cardno85 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 3:01pm)

  • This is probably really unhelpful, but if you get out to Inveraray there's a kilt maker there past the church. Can't remember the name though. That being said, I am planning on getting my next kilt from Houston. I really don't think a company having an online presence in 2021 is a sign of them being corporate sellouts. But each to their own. by cardno85 (Sun 5th Dec 2021 11:25am)
  • Where are you based? A fair number of them offer passport services so we can probably point you to one that isn't a trek if we know where you are. But, just to throw it out there, the post office on Dumbarton Road across from the subway/train station always had passport services when I had been in. Oh, and just as I was checking, turns out you can go to the branch finder ([https://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder)) and select the services you are looking for then pop in your postcode to find your nearest place :) by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 12:45pm)
  • I have never thought of doing this before, but that would seem better for the drivers too since a few have complained to me about the charge. You found the reception from drivers to be positive when taking that option? by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:10pm)
  • Has McGills got an awful lot better in the last few years? About 3-4 years ago the McGills buses running through Partick made First look good! by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:15pm)
  • Casting my mind back to 2003-4 the Garage stopped taking English notes, officially due to a spate of forgeries. Although I did see reports at the time that it was just because they were sick of Scottish notes not being accepted down south. Still got English notes out of their own cash machine though!! by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:23pm)
  • Since you appear to work mending roads, do you think there is a better option to what's in place at the moment? I read about these recycled plastic roads, but not sure if that's advertising bumph or if it's actually viable. And then with the weather here there must be a better system, every winter we end up in the same mess. That being said of course, replacing all the roads in Glasgow would be a logistical nightmare so even if there is something better would it even be possible to implement? by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:46pm)
  • I'm only Penilee but it's that distance that's a really short taxi journey or a really long walk (with a case at least). Looking at the map, do you reckon they would drop off at the BP next to the airport as Lonend seems like a bit of a trek? by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:59pm)
  • I do remember my Grandpa (who was an engineer) complaining about the patch work on roads saying that really there should be a larger section cut out and fully resurfaced to avoid the patches failing. So I get what you are saying about them not being done properly. Also on timings, it does seem that you report a pothole, and nothing is done until it's massive. But both of these still run on the reactive model. Around logistics, I am just thinking about the fact that likely everyone will complain about roads being closed for work (but at the same time complain about the state of the roads). I think instead of logistics it would be a case of getting community buy in that it's going to be a hassle for a period but we will end up with better roads in the long run. by cardno85 (Tue 7th Dec 2021 2:52pm)
  • I always get my steak pie from Grampian Meats on Dumbarton Rd in Partick. It doesn't look that fancy from the outside, but they are a really good butcher. by cardno85 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 11:55am)

  • Similar happened to us, but luckily we only went £3k over the home report value which we could, just, manage. To be fair to our mortgage advisor he did try and explain this concept to us but we didn't really understand. It wasn't until our offer was accepted that it was made clearer and we will know for next time. It would be useful if, for first time or "not for a good while" buyers, they just had a big bold statement that says "**You can only possibly get a mortgage for the HR value and nothing more**". by cardno85 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 10:02am)
  • Sounds amazing, where from? by cardno85 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 10:26am)
  • When my Ma last bought a house they didn't have home reports, so probably not the best for advice. So very sorry for this comment. by cardno85 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 11:26am)
  • That is mad, I've always found black cabs to be on the better side service-wise. I suppose every driver is an individual though so it's just your luck. Always feel iffy complaining about a taxi driver though, given most of my pick-ups or drop offs will be at my home it's a worry that they might be round to follow up. by cardno85 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 11:31am)
  • I got one for picking up the litter that blows onto the front grass, but it's actually really useful for a bit of extra reach so I use it a lot more than I thought I would. Definitely get one! by cardno85 (Thu 9th Dec 2021 11:39am)
  • What's the thoughts on the potential council tax rises? I'm a bit torn as, on one hand, the council keep saying that it's lack of funding that's behind the poor service, so removing that excuse *should* mean better service. But, on the other, more realistic, hand, is there really any hope that things will get better and will we just end up paying more for the same? by cardno85 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 12:20pm)
  • Obviously the current system based on decades old property values are not really fit for purpose. What are the other options on the table? Not asking this to be facetious, I've only seen something similar to income tax so was wondering what all the potential options are. by cardno85 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 1:09pm)
  • Not sure why you got a downvote on this, I think that's the most realistic option. And when we complain about paying more and things not getting better they will say it's because of a backlog of funding issues. by cardno85 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 1:07pm)
  • Thanks for the info, I did hear that rebanding was due recently but didn't happen, I decided to do some learning based on this and these are my thoughts, happy to open some chat one this because my knowledge if obviously VERY basic. Really I would take revaluation and rebanding as something that should be done on a regular basis, I realise this will be called out as a huge admin burden, but I can get a relatively up to date valuation of my property by just checking my mortgage account. Or take sales figures from one house per street (or small area) and use that and work out some bandings. Doesn't actually seem that hard (but I could be oversimplifying). In terms of the effort/results this is likely the easiest of the options. My favourite is probably the Proportional Property Tax. Just seems like such a simple system for home owners, get rid of all the stamp duty and stuff and stick a % on the value of the property regularly. I reckon it will be shot down by people with rental properties and housing associations given renters won't need to pay (which I think is a good thing IMO). Property value tax seems popular from an economists POV (after a cursory Wikipedia lookup), but I think the burden of implementing would be enough to have the council bin it. I amn't an economist by any means, but this seems to be a good system where increasing your property value doesn't cost you more, and it's in place in a lot of countries known for good public welfare. Local income tax seems like something really simple, but it would require the council to work with HMRC to implement and it's open to the same issues as income tax in that the wealthy will find ways to make their tax "efficient" meaning that the richest in town will likely end up paying hardly any of this. by cardno85 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 5:57pm)
  • Looking at that map, Glasgow with the lightest blue surrounded by darker shades. Yeah, they aren't the worst in the UK, but they on the low side and surrounded on all sides by better recycling services. You can see in the article that upwards of 70% of the country can recycle tubs and trays so Glasgow is behind the curve. Not sure about everyone else, but if they were to accept tubs and trays (plastic number 5) my complaints about 3 weekly green collections would go away, because these are often rigid items they take up a lot of space in the bin. by cardno85 (Mon 13th Dec 2021 2:20pm)
  • I'm assuming it's Pavilion rules, my folks used to go there every year for a concert (for the sake of familial reputation I won't say which) and it was always the case that you couldn't take your drinks in. It's the same in one of the auditoriums in the Royal Concert Hall. I know you can take drink in for the Theatre Royal and the Armadillo, not sure about the Kings though. by cardno85 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 10:38am)
  • I am not going to downvote you, because my mum would agree with you, but I really don't like a clootie dumpling in a fry-up. For that purpose the fruit pudding is the better choice. • Initally the price of mesh Wi-Fi put me off, didn't realise how much the price had come down. How do these work in terms of power? Do I need an electrician to wire them in or do they plug in? I also have real shortage of outlets in the house but with the concrete walls it would be a lot of expense and difficulty rewiring. by cardno85 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 3:20pm)
  • Thanks for the response, not sure if I trust my tapping in skills as being as aesthetically pleasing as my wife would like to carry this out, but it does seem a simple option. by cardno85 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 3:29pm)
  • Is that a mesh system too? When I toyed with buying a better router, I wasn't sure how much of an improvement I'd see given the house layout and concrete walls. So thinking a mesh system might be the best option, so will have a look into it. by cardno85 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 3:40pm)

  • I think wiring might have been the issue with the powerline adaptors in my house. We looked at getting the house rewired when we moved in, but the cost and disruption had us decide against it. It's an old council house with pretty much concrete walls and floors throughout so it would just be a massive job. It does mean we are short on sockets and so rely on a lot of adaptors which I know Powerline kit doesn't like. by cardno85 (Thu 16th Dec 2021 9:35am)

  • No need for a club, get some dirt, put seeds in it, forget to look after said seeds and be amazed that somehow there are wee green bits after a while. • If you have lots of time on your hands, and it turns up, you can take a 77 to the airport which I believe is cheaper than the airport bus. My wife took it once back from the airport though and it took her about an hour to get back to Thornwood. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 10:43am)
  • Always love a dig at Bathgate, but the idea of a large, modern, Central Belt airport is one I really like the sound of. There's already train lines and a motorway for access, going roughly 20 miles out of Edinburgh/Glasgow is hardly a major distance so stays handy for both cities. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 10:40am)
  • Those white cabs are an absolute joke, as I understand it they have a boundary fee to leave Renfrewshire which is what makes them so expensive, but I'd say 99% of people arriving at the airport aren't going to Paisley so the whole setup is terrible. I almost feel like there should be a part in all tourist guide books to book a private/black cab and where to find it. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 11:00am)
  • My wife and I went to Crazy Wok after having a flight cancelled during the beast from the East. See after a day of waiting around an airport, only to be told we aren't going anywhere and then traipsing up Dumbarton Rd through the snow, there was nothing better than some hot chrysanthemum tea and a steaming bowl of noodles and fatty pork to make us feel a little better. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Dec 2021 11:30am)

  • In all previous years the Christmas tree people had offered to collect it back up in January which was nice and handy, but this year they seem not to be doing it. My plan is to take it out and spend a day with the saw and load it into the brown bin. I wouldn't want to rely on the council uplift but if I am feeling particularly lazy I might black bag it and take it out to one of the parks that you can drop them off in (while obviously retaining the black bag for reuse). by cardno85 (Mon 3rd Jan 2022 5:00pm)
  • I was told by a guy in a pub (so I took it with a pinch of salt) that the reason for that is down to ScotRail not actually being responsible for Partick station but rather SPT, which is also why there were no train ticket machines there for a long time. Essentially it was a big fancy subway station that happened to have a train platform. by cardno85 (Sun 9th Jan 2022 6:47am)
  • I had assumed the Chivas building was being flattened due to the company branding on the barriers outside as I drove past, but I agree that would be a good location as the school can work with the college to offer more for students in terms of progression and course range. by cardno85 (Sun 9th Jan 2022 6:58am)
  • Best bet is probably going down by Victoria Park then either through Scotstoun or Jordanhill to get to GWR/Anniesland X from the West, but likely those wee roads will be pretty busy too. Crow Rd is just a nightmare in general, seems there is just way too much traffic for it to handle. by cardno85 (Wed 12th Jan 2022 10:03am)
  • I get the pain there, but I can't see it being agreed to. Routing everyone via Thornwood roundabout will just move congestion elsewhere, not to mention that anyone that is using it for access to the whole Broomhill section of Crow Rd and the surrounding houses will face quite a detour (I am pretty sure you can't do a half U right turn at the Abbey Drive lights). by cardno85 (Wed 12th Jan 2022 4:31pm)
  • In that case I agree, in fact looking at street view, there is a half lane added for turning, so if they could cut the middle embankment (are they called that in the middle?) a wee bit and make that an bigger turning lane with space for more cars. The expressway coming in at that point is a complete pain as well, traffic is heavy, you leave a gap to let one person in from the filter and it's like you have just held a shopping centre door open and everyone floods in and everyone behind you is raging. But if you don't leave a gap, everyone in the filter is raging. It's a really poor design in my opinion where you have two major routes joining so close to traffic lights. That being said, I can't complain much as I am never going beyond those lights (either off at the slip to Partick, or turning into the road by Victoria Park to visit the folks round that way) so it's a small issue for me, but for people regularly going from the south side to Anniesland it must be an absolute nightmare. by cardno85 (Wed 12th Jan 2022 5:49pm)

  • This will sound like a total lie, but the council tax department were really helpful with me when I needed a proof of address a few years back. I was online only and I needed a hard copy POA, gave them a phone and they posted out a paper copy 1st class and it arrived the next day. Could be worth a call to get your name added to the council tax bill and ask them to send a copy out if you need hard copies. by cardno85 (Thu 13th Jan 2022 9:47am)

  • Just hopping in on this one to add, it's also not something that many people are taught from a young age. It was never something covered in school, and a lot of families still see money as a bit of a taboo conversation topic. Here was me having never earned any money, never even having a bank account, then off to Uni and a load of credit card and massive overdraft offers coming left, right and centre. Only just getting back on track now in my 30s after about a decade of hiding my head in the sand and pushing debts from one place to the other. It really should be a skill that's taught in schools, I mean economics is right there in the HE title, so why not add it in as part of the mandatory HE modules earlier at school. Might even encourage more people to take it further if it shifts the old skive of cooking and sewing (perhaps HE has changed a lot since I was at school though). by cardno85 (Wed 19th Jan 2022 1:59pm)
  • I must have been just in luck as mine is due to be shipped on the first. • I'm actually amazed how many folks on here are happy with insurance companies saying it'll be fine. Any time I've had to deal with insurers (touch wood it hasn't been for a while) it's been a nightmare and they have been looking for any excuse not to pay out. by cardno85 (Thu 20th Jan 2022 1:49pm)

  • I got an Alba book about independence and a Labour leaflet explaining what they would do if they won power in Westminster. Really wish these were treated as actual council elections not just Holyrood/Westminster practice runs. by cardno85 (Wed 4th May 2022 9:17am)
  • I'm feeling the same, but will force myself to go. Your second point sums it all up so well and gets me thinking, does the actual elected council make a difference, or is it the actual structure of the unelected portion that is the source of the pain? Not a dig at the employees of the council, but if the right structures and improvement plans aren't in place nothing will really change. I kind of feel we are stuck in an odd stalemate where both councillors and managers are so stuck in the "that's the way it's always been" position, and afraid to upset the applecart in case it all goes wrong and they are on all the front pages that we are almost destined never to see any actual improvement. Really we need a party that would campaign on major council reorganisation and restructure, and then do it. But it's unlikely they will get voted in. Shite state of affairs. by cardno85 (Wed 4th May 2022 9:43am)
  • I have no-one round the door, and very few leaflets through (just what seemed like a Holyrood manifesto from Alba and a Westminster one for Labour). 3 out of 4 of my current councillors are actually not that bad, they are active in the community and do respond, even if not much comes off the back of that response. I do think there needs to be some change in the overall council though, so will vote Green number 1 as that's someone young that might inject a bit of dynamism in there, then 2-4 will be the current councillors that I have dealt with before. Not sure how much further down that 4 I will go. by cardno85 (Wed 4th May 2022 10:03am)
  • Does anyone have any experience in getting a table sanded and revarnished? I am thinking of doing it myself, but thinking about the cost vs quality, like I can do it and only pay for sandpaper and varnish, but it might not look great, while I have no idea how much actual furniture restorers might cost (from a cursory google there aren't set prices, I guess because size and shapes of furniture can be all sorts). by cardno85 (Wed 25th May 2022 11:20am)
  • Thanks for the advice, I am thinking it's solid wood given the underside, which is unfinished looks like the same wood as the finished top, but I can't be sure. Parents bought it 30 odd years ago while staying in Dubai so there isn't really a website to check. Without sounding too much like an idiot, is there an easy way to tell if it's solid wood or not? by cardno85 (Thu 26th May 2022 9:08am)
  • That's actually less than I expected, was that just sanding or sanding & refinishing? Given the risks highlighted by the commenter above I might have a look around refinishing companies. by cardno85 (Thu 26th May 2022 9:11am)

  • I am probably guilty of this, so apologies for past (and potential future) transgressions. Although, I think a lot of people like me fall into the same bucket, rarely drive into town so don't know which lane to be in (and google maps is too slow!), find it massively stressful driving through town because of this, so rarely drive into town perpetuating the cycle. Also adding my apologies for never being in the right lane driving through Paisley either! by cardno85 (Mon 30th May 2022 12:25pm)

  • My wife was away over the weekend there and it was really quiet when she was flying out and returning. Makes me wonder if this is truly a staffing issue or a scheduling one, if they are finding massive queues and delays at certain times (guessing when multiple package flights are taking off within minutes of each other) then is there not a way to adjust flight times so flights are more evenly spaced out? by cardno85 (Wed 8th Jun 2022 11:28am)

I've just had to arrange a taxi there because the earliest train I can get into town on a Sunday arrives at half 9 so too late to get to Partick. If you are planning to use trains to get there make sure you check the earliest trains. by cardno85 (Sat 18th Jun 2022 4:33pm)
  • Believe it or not, I'm in Glasgow and still can't get to the west end by train/subway on time!! But that's another thread I'm sure. Thanks for the offer though! by cardno85 (Sat 18th Jun 2022 7:25pm)
  • It's funny because during driving lessons this is exactly how hill starts were taught to me, few years in and you get used to your car and it all goes out the window until you get a different car and start stalling at the worst possible moments. Remembered them to use the handbrake and haven't gone back! That and I would love a wee notification sticker that says I'm getting used to a new car and not just being a fanny. by cardno85 (Sun 19th Jun 2022 8:03am)

  • I got moaned at by some mature lady in brewhemia in Edinburgh the other week for queuing at the bar, she's all full of herself like "you aren't meant to queue at a bar", but as I pointed out, there is one serving area the size of a DVD for the whole place, and her table was blocking any side entry. I suppose my point is, sometimes you have to queue, but doing it at a bar with plenty of serving space is mental. by cardno85 (Sun 19th Jun 2022 5:34pm)

Hopefully someone will know the name of this and can save you getting someone out. If your fuse box has relatively new looking circuit breakers they should be ok, I've got old Bakelite black things in mine and I've been told they need changed but it's not mega urgent. • I was genuinely surprised to read that, since it was done up it really seems like just a waiting shell with bugger all there. They have some coffee carts now, but when it first reopened there was literally nothing. • Kitchen diner is great, but having stayed in flats with an open plan kitchen/lounge and another straight after with a more old fashioned separate kitchen, the latter was really preferable to us because it meant you could close off the kitchen. You aren't sitting in your lounge of an evening staring at dishes or getting stale smells of food (especially frying) wafting about. So I suppose it's just horses for courses, if either had a dishwasher then I'd probably have been more keen on the open plan system. by cardno85 (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 11:09am)
  • It's a bit of pot luck to be honest with lots of moving parts so very hard to say. As I understand it, Gett used to be the only app that had old fashioned pre-booking, but I tried that on Sunday there and they just released it on the app 10 minutes prior to the booking time which took ages and I got a black cab from their own app quicker, so I'm not sure if I was just unlucky or they have changed how the app works. For a something like that, you probably want to use multiple apps and go with the first one that accepts. Even then it's not a guarantee, so make sure you are ordering the taxi at least half an hour before you actually need to leave. by cardno85 (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 10:16am)

  • In some ways I agree with this sentiment, but at the moment the alternatives are equally dire. I was thinking while I was standing in a massive queue at Gordon St the other night, trains shut, busses shite, hardly any taxis at the rank and apps with nothing available...it's a pretty shite situation coming home from town in the evening these days. • This makes me seriously wonder how long ago the gas stove in my house was bought. Came with the property when we bought it and does the job, but the gas doesn't cut out automatically. Keep meaning to get a new cooker/oven, but keep putting it off. Can't even use the oven because the seals are off so really need to get round to replacing. by cardno85 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 11:07am)
  • I have the CO detectors in the kitchen and living room anyway, so not hugely worried. I actually looked into doing the seals, but it looks like it too a right good bash so the seals are ok, just the door is dented which lets heat escape. I do most of my oven cooking in the combi microwave anyway so I'm not really in any rush. Will probably wait until the painters have come to do the kitchen and then top it off with a fresh new cooker. by cardno85 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 11:23am)
  • Oh I've got them too, not to worry. I was a week or so late just due to delivery times but don't tell the government in case I get a bollocking. It was interesting when I went to do my home insurance renewal this year that interlinked alarms was one of the questions now. I clicked through because I had them, but would be interesting to see what happens if you say you don't have them. by cardno85 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 11:37am)

  • Since commenting in the gas cooker thread, turns out my current cooker (and the work surface storage to accommodate it) is 49.5cm and everything I can find online is 50cm. I'm thinking of taking off one of the edging strips of plastic and giving it a quick sand to get that extra 0.5cm, any ideas for resealing after that? Or, anyone know a source of 49.5cm gas cookers? by cardno85 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 6:51pm)
  • I actually think Edinburgh Trams might have scuppered this for us, but I did see a suggestion by someone a few months back of trolley buses. They only need the overhead infrastructure which means there is a lower cost/time for installation of that, plus (and I'm no trolley bus expert) there is a possibility of having them have an onboard battery which allows them to go "off-cable" and still service smaller streets. Full electric system, without the issues around range, that could be implemented city wide without digging up roads (although a fair few need digging up, but that's another thread!) seems like a great idea. by cardno85 (Tue 28th Jun 2022 10:29am)

  • Do you happen to know how this works in practice, I just ask because I had a nosey at the website off the back of comments here and it looks really rather nice. Given the name and location, I wouldn't be surprised if tourists would be keen on it, and the website suggests a nice central hotel, so is there like a hostel section and a hotel section? Not suggesting the idea of sharing space with homeless people would be intolerable, just curious how it works when the website seems to be in complete contrast to what you hear on here. by cardno85 (Fri 1st Jul 2022 9:22am)

  • While the bedbug thought is a nightmare, I would second the idea of buying a brand new mattress for a house that you have bought. You will probably spend more time on that than any other furniture combined, so take your time, test a few out and pick one you are sure you will be really comfortable on. If there's one item to splurge on in a first house, mattress has to be right up there. by cardno85 (Wed 13th Jul 2022 9:47am)
  • Don't forget you aren't allowed to ever leave your house without your dog. So no-one that works either. Essentially you need to be a fit, rich, childfree retiree with a huge house and no other pets. No idea why they struggle to rehome. In saying that, I found that SSPCA were a bit more accommodating than dogs trust and that's where we got our dog from. Worth noting that SSPCA have stopped letting folk into the kennels to look at dogs as they found the dogs were a lot calmer during COVID without people passing through. by cardno85 (Tue 19th Jul 2022 9:03am)

  • Mine are somewhat the same, although they do allow phoning at any time of the day, and they will book you in for a phone appointment same day or the next. Which I am fine with, but the doctor asked me to book in a F2F appointment and that's when the confusion really started, they can only book you in up to 2 weeks in advance, with new slots coming in about once a week, around Wednesday lunchtime. Our receptionists are actually quite nice and so tell me when to phone back, but it's a confusing system. They also used to have online booking which has not been turned back on since COVID, and I just think that's a much easier way to do it all round. It means you aren't doing a back and forth over the phone to check if you are available at the time offered and you are surely saving the reception staff work by doing it yourself. Suppose there's an element of people abusing the system and booking themselves appointments when it could just as easy be done over the phone, but they could do an initial phone triage and then provide a one time password for online booking which could prevent that. by cardno85 (Thu 28th Jul 2022 8:59am)
  • I was jumping in to suggest this too, it's not what I'd call posh, but it has a really nice "social hub of the town" vibe with historic rooms, great food and lots of outside space if the weather is nice-ish (can't hope for too much in Inveraray!). It's also mega dog friendly if your parents have a dog they don't want to leave behind. Wife and I are going just after the school holidays finish and can't wait! by cardno85 (Thu 28th Jul 2022 9:04am)
  • I took the same approach, I am particularly lucky to have been on a fixed 24m tariff until next year, but know that the price rise will hit hard at that point, so I upped my direct debit to build a cushion for when the fixed price runs out. I'm not sure if it is a wise idea, MSE seems to recommend claiming back credit from suppliers but not sure if that applies to my current situation. by cardno85 (Thu 4th Aug 2022 1:06pm)
  • I just had a quick search on there to be fair and the page about direct debit payments to energy suppliers seemed to focus on unlocking credit that's there. So might have been on the wrong section. Arguably, instead of upping my direct debit, I could put the money to better use in some sort of investment fund or high interest savings, but in my idealistic mind I like to think that the extra money sitting with Octopus might stop them hounding someone that's struggling to pay. by cardno85 (Thu 4th Aug 2022 1:21pm)
  • Given the nature of trains arriving in Waverly from all over the UK (aware that there are national journeys from Glasgow, but a lot go via Edinburgh so it seems like a hub) it's so incredibly disorganised and you always seem to be bumping into people (doesn't help that the central barriers to promote a one way system are ignored by everyone) and it's a relief to get out of. That being said, the new Queen St I would argue is just as bad in terms of general unpleasantness. But it could be improved by just announcing platforms more than 4-5 minutes before the train leaves. They have created a situation where everyone mulls around the ticket gates because you have to rush through to catch your train meaning it's massively busy. Give out the platform 10-15 minutes before the train departs and most people would meander up to the platform and there would be more space to wait (not that you can do much else since there's bugger all there). by cardno85 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 11:12am)
  • I like Paisley too, the farmer's market is good, and there are some good places to eat and drink (I'm a big fan of the Ugly Duck). But it needs to turn the corner on potential, as people have been talking about Paisley regenerating for decades, and do something to get people living in and about the town. Lots of the good places that open up can only stay open if there are people to go to them. I do wonder if there will be a bit of a boost when the museum opens back up? by cardno85 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 11:22am)
  • That's true, but then I always feel like a train station (or any transport hub really) should have certain basics in there for people that are catching a connection like a Newsagent and somewhere selling hot food so people who are unfamiliar with the city have somewhere to get some basics before the next journey. It might be that Queen St just doesn't have many connecting trains and so it's not a concern for them. It looks lovely and bright and clean after the renovation, but I just feel it's a bit devoid of anything. by cardno85 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 1:27pm)

  • I was actually thinking about this the other day because there's loads in my area, but more from the view that I'm getting old. I mean I begged my folks for these when I was wee but they were prohibitively expensive, and would have loved it. But now I'm sitting there thinking how massively unsafe it is and it's a disaster waiting to happen. So yeah, hate them, but I think it's just because I'm old. by cardno85 (Fri 12th Aug 2022 7:43pm)

  • I was super slow yesterday as I started having back spasms about 2k in so walked a lot more than normal, worst 10k time ever at 1hr 28, it was a nice route though. My only thought was that they will close off roads to cars for these, but the cycle path didn't look closed at all. Didn't bother us much at the back since we weren't near anyone else, but I would imagine it was a nightmare in the more clustered sections. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 9:56am)
  • It's never happened to me before, but normally I have been doing some weights while training which I hadn't before this one, so assiming that's the issue. I ran the Men's 10k in 1hr12 earlier this year and was hoping to be under 1hr10 going into the Great Scottish run in October, but it's a good read on where I am in terms of the year. Mad that they didn't put up loads of warning signs on the cycle track or even close it for a period, there are some really blind corners so surprised there weren't any collisions. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 1:16pm)
  • As I understand it there is a strike at the end of this week, Friday to Monday by the looks of it so you are probably for the best catching the lorry as it's there. Just my luck it's a very rare brown, green, purple combo week so that's disappointing. Last time with the strike I got someone to privately empty it (SEPA registered, after the strike ended, but was looking at 9 weeks before my green bin would have been emptied, please don't shout at me), but I'm hoping I can avoid it this time if there's a midweek run after the strike. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 4:00pm)
  • This probably isn't really relevant to Glasgow, but you are a smart bunch, see all this stuff about the raw sewage getting pumped into the sea in England, is there an actual reason (other than it being cheaper I assume) they are doing that instead of treating the sewage as I assume they are meant to? by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 4:58pm)
  • This is the right answer, while I agree with the above posters that a lot can be done with cloth towels, always have blue roll on hand for stuff that would either soak through all of my cloth stock, or when dealing with things the dog occasionally drags in on her paws from the garden. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 5:16pm)
  • That actually makes sense, I was wracking my brain thinking why it would be beneficial to the water companies to do it because news reports talk about it being "pumped" into the sea as if it was an active decision to do so. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 6:48pm)
  • I suppose there's the thing that since long dry spells followed by heavy rain are getting more common, what are they doing to future proof this (hypothetically). Do you know if there are any water companies doing well that could be leading by example or further reading on this? To be honest I threw this out as a bit of a random query but now I'm quite interested. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd Aug 2022 7:51pm)

  • There was a doc on Netflix I think about these "paedo hunters" and it just makes me uncomfortable. I mean it's terrible that the police don't have the resource to do this and put dangerous people away so in some sense I can get where they are coming from, but it's just such a worry that they will either mess up and end up battering a complete innocent, or ruin a police investigation because they aren't following a proper chain of custody. by cardno85 (Fri 26th Aug 2022 4:22pm)
  • I heard in Poland there's a liability to it, so if you don't clear the snow/ice in front of your shop or house and someone was to slip and hurt themselves that's on you. No idea if it's true, but shop fronts and pavements outside houses are cleared. In fact, during the beast from the east you could see in Partick that the polish shops we cleared in front like little pockets of pavement in the snow. by cardno85 (Sun 4th Sep 2022 10:04am)
  • And, as I didn't put it in my initial reply, I think it's a great idea. Sweeping or clearing a wee patch of pavement in front of your property isn't a massive hardship for most and if everyone does it, it makes a huge difference. I just wonder how we get people to buy into it? I mean not everyone that ignored it will have someone slip on their section, crack their head open and sue, so most people will probably risk it. by cardno85 (Sun 4th Sep 2022 11:06am)
  • Funny there was a guy from a letting agency talking to the BBC about how it's ridiculous and that they wouldn't ask a shop or pub to freeze their prices and they are unfairly singling out the private rental market. Just seemed like such a poor example to use as firstly, a pint doesn't cost you 30-50% of your monthly take home pay and the prices in shops and pubs haven't shown the same massive increases over the past 5 or 6 years that we have seen in the private rental market. by cardno85 (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:03pm)
  • This might be cheating a bit as it's not so much a place in the city, but I love how you can be living in the city with all the amenities that provides, but in about half an hour you can be out by Loch Lomond, or within an hour you are by the Arrochar Alps, it's just amazing that we can be a totally different world so quickly and easily from the city. For an actual place though, Kelvin Walkway is great. by cardno85 (Thu 8th Sep 2022 8:47am)
  • I found it a challenge to get Napa Cabbage in regular supermarkets and ended up just going to the chinese supermarket, they also have daikon to ribbon through which I like. Agree with all the above though, it's surprisingly easy to make, and making your own, as well as adding your own flavours, means you can slow the ferment and get it in the fridge as soon as it hits the texture you want. Volume is good too, with one cabbage, one daikon, and two carrots I made 2 litres worth (4x 500ml jars) and planning on making more this weekend as I'm on my last wee bit. by cardno85 (Fri 9th Sep 2022 9:21am)

  • It really is short sighted, Arnold Clark gets a bad write up, but I couldn't be happier with the service I got there (aware it will likely depend on the particular salesperson). I basically knew what I wanted and how much I wanted to spend, told the guy that. He got me what I wanted, put on a bunch of discounts (which are likely BS, but makes you feel good) and I left paying a lot less than I expected per month. Since then I've recommended him to multiple people, and will be going back to him when I need a new car. If he had done what happened to OP I'd have been on here letting everyone know too! by cardno85 (Thu 15th Sep 2022 11:13am)
  • Beds are a right pain, because they often have the same beds with different brand and model names/numbers that are exclusive to bed shops, so you can't really go in to the shops to try them out and then jump online and find it cheaper elsewhere. That being said, given the amount of time you spend on a matress over the course of its lifetime, so I can somewhat accept mattress shops ripping me off instead of taking a chance on a bed I haven't tried. Aware a lot of the online companies have generous return policies, but the hassle of re-rolling that mattress into the box puts me off! by cardno85 (Thu 15th Sep 2022 2:45pm)
  • I did! Although, I asked if I could change the "premium" mats they threw in for some basic rubber ones for when we are taking the dog out on potentially muddy walks and that was a no-go. by cardno85 (Fri 16th Sep 2022 12:44pm)
  • While roll and sausage (and pie) has come up below, I actually think the answer here is the roll itself. You really don't get the same rolls anywhere else on a regular basis, and they are often termed "Glasgow Rolls" when they have ordered them in from Mortons or wherever. It's not mad fancy, but even when I was staying in Inveraray, only and hour and a half outside of Glasgow I used to await the Friday delivery of Glasgow rolls as you couldn't get them any other day! by cardno85 (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 5:24pm)
  • That's odd, because just one station on from Gilmour Street (Hillington West) the very first option (top left) is Glasgow Cen/QST. Given there are more options from Paisley I wonder if the UI is built in such a way that it changes depending on demand, although I would have imagined that the majority of tickets from Paisley would be to Glasgow given it's the closest city. Although maybe most people that travel between Paisley and Glasgow use the app or a season pass and so the ticket machine UI is thrown by the folk buying tickets at the machines going elsewhere. by cardno85 (Thu 6th Oct 2022 4:51pm)
  • Food from the Ugly Duck in paisley is tasty. I also like going to the keg for a few pints if I'm waiting for the train, good wee pub and the food in there smells amazing but I've not eaten there. by cardno85 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 9:00am)
  • That is really the danger there, my folks were very comfortable for most of my youth, but it led to them being very spendy and so now the income isn't there, they have experienced a real drop in lifestyle. It's really important to keep a reality check whenever you are buying something big like a house or a car, keep in mind what you actually need and not just what you fancy. Doesn't really help when you go to a mortgage advisor and they say "well, on your salary you could potentially be approved for a mortgage for £18m (I've gone for an exaggerated example)" which makes you think you can afford more than you think you can and end up really hurting with a mortgage you can't really afford. Really try and pull things back to how much you will actually end up paying a month and decide whether that's affordable. We went for something at the lower end of our budget that ticked the boxes (garden for a dog, spare room, close to a train station) and really thankful now given the impanding interest situation. by cardno85 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 5:46pm)
  • So it's not that we are being offered a mortgage at that, but when you first meet with a mortgage advisor they will take into account earnings and any savings and do some calculations to show what you *could* borrow if you wanted. We went to the advisor first specifically for that so, when looking at houses, we knew what sort of range of prices we could realistically afford. by cardno85 (Tue 11th Oct 2022 10:08am)
  • I've not bought anywhere else, so how does Scotland differ to other places, what could we be learning? Completely agree with what you are saying though, if my Grandpa hadn't died I wouldn't have been able to buy a house and that's the end of it. It makes it all a bit strange that in a way I'm "lucky" to have been able to get that money, but I would rather he was still with us. If people don't have some sort of "unexpected" money, it's really hard to get that first step. I know a lot of people say to move out of the city to cheaper areas, it's not all people wanting to be near fancy coffee shops, but having family and friends nearby is really important for people in case they run into issues, so it's not always realistic for someone to up sticks and move across the city to somewhere they don't know, with no support network just because that's all they can afford. by cardno85 (Tue 11th Oct 2022 10:14am)
  • Best thing to do is give them a ring beforehand, even if they have plenty of stock, it lets them get it ready and makes for a smoother transaction. If I'm taking the dog to my folks and intending to have a drink a black cab is the easiest option. Sometimes they can also take a while though depending where you are (although that might also be because I said I'm taking an animal and maybe not all allow that). by cardno85 (Fri 21st Oct 2022 1:21pm)
  • What would their USP be though? The issue in Glasgow, as I understand it, is that there aren't enough taxi drivers out there as a lot packed it in over COVID to either do something else or retire and there isn't enough to entice them back or bring in new people. Don't get me wrong, I think for a long time Glasgow was spoiled with a very saturated market of taxis which kept prices low and coverage really good. But I feel those days are just gone and taxis will end up being a luxury for many - which isn't great when we have woeful public transport for much of the population. by cardno85 (Fri 21st Oct 2022 1:27pm)

Now it's about making sure people can access it without a car to allow the actual car sections to flow well. I appreciate there is Partick Train Station and Hillhead Underground, but there are so many places in Glasgow that are a 15-20 minute drive to the area, but incredibly difficult via public transport. • I don't think it's that backward to be honest, if I am a wee personified time before 3, looking towards it, the minutes following 3 are at the back of it (depending which way 3 is facing I suppose, but let's say the front and back are relative to me) so 3.10-3.15 (what most people seem to mean by the phrase) is just behind 3, or "at the back of". by cardno85 (Thu 10th Nov 2022 9:07am)
  • I actually put my bedsheets out yesterday as it was nice. Didn't get them all totally dry, but gives them a nice fresh smell and they dried overnight on the airer without a problem. \[edit\] - Appreciate not everyone will have access to an outdoor drying area, but if you do have a shared one, likely not many people will be using it at this time of year so you might be able to get a couple of hours on a dry day which will make a difference before you hang it up inside. by cardno85 (Mon 14th Nov 2022 3:47pm)

  • This might not help depending on dietary requirements, but my go to is buy a massive amount of mince, make mince and potatoes, portion up 3 full tupperwares of mince and freeze from that. Then it's just a case of defrost one, add herbs and a tin of tomatoes for a bolognese, defrost the other, add cajun spices, tomatoes, peppers (and kidney beans if you are strange) for chilli or enchiladas. Then my favourite is pull out a mince portion, add tomatoes, curry powder and peas for a keema. Essentially 4 completely different flavours/experiences from a decent 2 for 1 mince deal. by cardno85 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 2:25pm)
  • I am sure someone on this sub once mentioned that the break up of the various councils was some sort of Tory thing so they could get control of councils, so splitting East Renfrewshire out from Glasgow because it's an affluent area would make it more likely to be a Tory council. I am probably butchering the explanation as it was a while ago, but that's kind of how I remember someone saying. But I agree with you, there are far too many councils, and it's something that definitely impacts Glasgow since a number of residents of other councils will have Glasgow as their place of work and leisure which leads to a discrepancy in where council tax is paid as opposed to needed (although that doesn't excuse GCC from being inept). So I would have like a Glasgow Metro council which would tie up the areas round about with stronger community council voices to ensure areas who currently have a separate council still have a say in their areas. No idea what to do with Ayrshire or Edinburgh because I don't live there and don't know what issues they have with their councils, so specifically dealing with Glasgow in my comment. by cardno85 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 2:47pm)

Even at the supermarket it's trolley tokens since I can keep them attached to my keys so as not to forget. • Best thing to do is buy the cheap stuff from Lidl or Aldi then, when you bung it in the pot, add in some cloves, cinnamon stick, slices of orange, and some honey and it will be at least as good as the Christmas market stuff. If you want to go even easier, go into a Polish shop and they will sell spice mixes for mulled wine which you can just sprinkle in while heating it up. by cardno85 (Tue 29th Nov 2022 9:33am)
  • Probably just because I'm getting old, but most of my stuff, when I rarely go clothes shopping comes from M&S. They have a decent selection, prices are alright if you find things in the sale, and the quality is generally pretty good. • For the dog, it might be the case that the owners are out and don't realise how much of a noise the dog is creating, hard to tell if any neighbours have said anything. Might be worth a note/chat, but SSPCA are always an option if you don't fancy that. For the door, most handles will come off from the inside with just a screwdriver, if you can get it off then you can take the whole handle/mechanism to B&Q (or equivalent) and ask someone there for a replacement then search on youtube for installation of whatever they give you. If you can't get it off with a screwdriver, might be a certain security handle and you would need to involve the factor if you can't find the model number (if you can find the model, then revert back to YouTube). by cardno85 (Wed 30th Nov 2022 1:43pm)

  • Yeah, the events, even when they go ahead, are really quite underwhelming. I think a lot of them look like they were dreamed up by social media managers as they all seem to be about creating something that looks good in pictures which little to no effort put into actual enjoyment. Went round Glasglow once and there was bugger all to actually do. by cardno85 (Mon 5th Dec 2022 2:07pm)
  • It is quite sad, especially as a lot of the public lap it up because the events are always well attended (often too much so). It does make me wonder if it's likely to be the way forward though, sad as it is. Without knowing the finances, and looking in from the outside, it looks like it's not overly expensive to set up and run but they can sell tickets off the back of influencers that are more than happy to take some free tickets and post pictures to get their social media following to buy the tickets. If Itison are making money on these ventures then I doubt it will be long before a lot of others jump on the bandwagon. by cardno85 (Tue 6th Dec 2022 9:09am)
  • This is the right answer. I've slipped in all sorts of shoes if I'm not concentrating. Penguin walking as Crabbita says is good, just think small steps and keeping your centre of gravity, well, centred. Or I remember a Canadian chap once giving me a technique which moves you a bit faster but on a similar principle, essentially you can take bigger steps while staying centred but instead of pushing on a step just roll from heel to toe and use that momentum to keep you going. by cardno85 (Tue 6th Dec 2022 9:26am)
  • My current choice for airport runs is renfrewshire cabs since they are close to the airport, although I believe they have the same system of booking in advance whereby they just release the job 10-15 minutes before you booked for, so if you are far away from the airport it may take longer to come. by cardno85 (Tue 6th Dec 2022 9:31am)

Taxis is a decent shout, last time I was there I saw millions of taxis parked at the sides of the road so assume it wouldn't be a huge wait to get one back. Although just thinking I might do a reccy and see how long you can park at Lidl there and potentially park there for the appointment and pop in for lunch on the way back out. by cardno85 (Wed 7th Dec 2022 4:57pm)

  • Mountain Warehouse is a good shout. I get my shoes and boots for walking the dog there on account of their hiking boots being waterproof and comfy without breaking the bank. Mind if you get their full on leather hiking boots they require a bit of care but they are super comfy, warm and dry. Mine are on their third winter, used daily, have been up hills (and half a mountain) as well as muddy fields and parks and my feet are still kept dry. by cardno85 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 8:27am)
  • Just in case I'm being used as an example, I labelled my post boring because parking is not a particularly exciting topic so felt it was accurate, and people have been helpful which is what I expected. Away from that, I completely get your point, but I think you are Velo are actually on the same page here, what we want is to encourage engagement and conversation with both old and new users. So you are right that we can't be turning into a wee clique, but a lot of the inane/repetitive posts can stifle actual engagement. So, yes we don't want people being arseholes for the sake of it, but the sub will die just as quickly if it's flooded with the same stuff all the time. So I suppose my point is that you are right that there needs to be a push to prevent people being abusive, but that doesn't mean there can't be an active push for good content in the first place in the sense of a bit of a welcome and what to expect. Hit it from both angles if you will. Also keeping in mind that, I assume, the mods are doing this voluntarily and may have jobs, families, etc that will, rightfully, take priority over the sub. by cardno85 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 8:47am)

  • You aren't far wrong, weather can be very changeable at that time of year, so if you have a sweater and a waterproof you should be fine. Although you might want a few more layers if you aren't acclimated to the cold. It could be very frosty or somewhat pleasant, but unlikely to be anything above 15C or even near that. Can't really talk about it being suitable for the office given we don't know your office dress code. Probably pick that up with a local colleague. by cardno85 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 4:43pm)
  • Essentially I just live in hoodies that I get for Christmas/Birthday that mostly come from Amazon. Jackets I normally go for M&S and I got a Levis one that was reduced in their shop once, but there will be plenty of shops to get jackets. I don't have much of a winter wardrobe as I don't feel the cold that much and also am not out that often. You might actually get a better deal buying in your own country since it might not be as popular given there's less need (could go the other way though, with it being expensive because people going to cold places are likely to be more well-off) but you will know the local market better than me. Just keep in mind for a jacket to go a size or two up to account for layers. Also, waterproof with a hood will be your friend, umbrellas and Glasgow don't mix too well! by cardno85 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 5:22pm)
  • Can't help with the hire of that, but from watching council workers in Poland doing it a few years back, it might be easier to go low tech. Wheelbarrow full of grit and a flat edged shovel, then you scoop up a shovel load and use you hand (probably want to be in some old gloves) to brush it off there. They got through streets in no time with that. by cardno85 (Tue 13th Dec 2022 10:34am)
  • So that's why I've always seen radiators by the windows in other countries. I always thought it was an odd thing as I assumed you would be losing heat having the heater by the window but I suppose keeping the place dry fights part of that battle. • When I first lived in Poland I noticed pretty much every property had radiators under the windows. Thought it was odd, as above, that they would put heaters somewhere that would lose loads of heat, but never said anything because, well, they know winter better than me! So interesting to realise it stops humidity, which I suppose has a knock on effect of better warming. by cardno85 (Wed 14th Dec 2022 9:23am)

  • Similar model I used in Krakow, paid 54zl (about a tenner) a month for the whole network of trams and buses around the city, just checked there and in since 2014 it's gone up to 80zl (about £16). Amazing value and the actual service is amazing, only ever had to wait for a bus at rush hour, even then it might be delayed by 10 minutes at a push. Have been following their council on facebook and the infrastructure improvements have been amazing, they are building whole new networks of bus and tram exclusive roads/tracks to connect business/industrial areas with the city centre and suburbs so it's likely even better now. Just for those saying that prices are relative, 54zl while I was living there was the equivalent of 2 delivery pizzas, or 6 beers in a bar, so pretty reasonable all in. by cardno85 (Tue 20th Dec 2022 9:59am)
  • Never thought of it that way, but you are completely right. You might get some during a short term trial who take a jump to a different career or interest because they have the freedom to do so in that short period, but for most of them it's just going to be free money for a while they can either save or spend, which will likely prove the doubters of such a system right (who say that poor folk will just spend it on crap and rich folk will just add it to their savings and it will make no actual difference to their life). I just hope people who want to implement such a trial have your mindset and make sure it's a long term trial, there's no reason they can't extrapolate data 3-4 years into that trial to see what a difference it's making, but having a hard stop will not encourage lasting change in people. by cardno85 (Tue 20th Dec 2022 10:08am)
  • Having split fares doesn't help this as you need to know where you are going and how much that costs before you get on. If it was a flat fare you just get on, and then you could have a wee screen to tell you the stops are next (or even add a bit of stop info like "nxt stop is this st, alight here for this thing") and it takes all of that away from the driver/passenger interaction. There is no excuse in 2022 that there can't be accurate tracking of buses in a large city. I saw tracked buses in other cities almost 20 years ago. by cardno85 (Tue 20th Dec 2022 10:51am)

  • It's pretty much the reason I try not to drive in town, less for the beeps, but more my internal monologue telling me I'm going to be in the wrong lane and piss everyone off. My issue is that it seems the "right lane" to be in doesn't become apparent until far too late, so you have no chance to change and Google doesn't seem to know which is which either. So I'm toddling along quite happy, appearing to be in the right lane at the first couple of lights, then suddenly I approach the next and I'm on a left or right turn without changing lanes. I normally just go with whatever way I'm told to go and try to find a way round, but it's really stressful. Paisley's the same, driving around quite happy and the next thing you know you are set to go off course. by cardno85 (Thu 22nd Dec 2022 10:11am)

  • So I have the same problem in the house and have had a few folk round to look at it, firstly I was pointed in the direction of [https://www.masticscotland.co.uk/](https://www.masticscotland.co.uk/) who popped round to check the external seals which were all fine, then I got out the window mender in paisley ( 07834 771518) who checked the windows themselves and stated they were fine, but it looks like the internal sealant is blown and they have told me to get a joiner in to reseal the internal seals. Bit of a faff, but no cost from either of those two for coming out to have a look and neither pushed me into paying for something that wasn't needed which is nice. That being said, finding a decent joiner that will come out to do some sealing work (aware it can be DIYed, but the state I made of the bath when I tried to do that once has led me to not wanting to try on my windows) is really difficult at the moment. Have not had a response from a number I have tried finding online. So I suppose, if you are handy, or have a joiner pal, you might want to go down the route of resealing the interiors first, see if that solves the problem before calling someone out. by cardno85 (Thu 12th Jan 2023 9:23am)
  • Keeping an eye on this since I would be keen to have options outside of Virgin when my contract period is up. One thing to keep in mind on speeds, is this is not always dependent on CF or your ISP, but rather what your in-home setup is. If you have multiple floors, thick walls, etc. the speeds you will get will vary, and most ISPs will only take hard-wired into their router speeds as evidence of service failures. So if you are mainly using WiFi around various rooms, it might be worth investing in some 3rd party mesh systems and see if that improves your current setup ahead of changing supplier. by cardno85 (Fri 13th Jan 2023 9:40am)
  • Wouldn't go as high as 8 or 9 out of 10, but there are some proper stand out moments! by cardno85 (Mon 16th Jan 2023 9:14am)
  • Wow, can't believe that. I was sure that the microbrewery built that, but I was quite young when it first opened so probably just didn't remember it being anything else. Food in there was really good when it first opened and supposedly the beers were not bad, probably ahead of the times having a microbrewery there as that would likely be mad popular in the area now. by cardno85 (Tue 24th Jan 2023 2:59pm)
  • I was in on Thursday and the food was really tasty, nothing mad fancy, but basic pub grub done quite well. It wasn't the cheapest, but I wasn't expecting that with it being smack dab in the middle of town. by cardno85 (Tue 24th Jan 2023 3:12pm)
  • Succoth caves you say?? Just had a quick google and results range from proper cool looking caves to walks with "small caves". Is there a good resource on these, and would you recommend it as a wee day trip with the dog? by cardno85 (Tue 24th Jan 2023 3:17pm)
  • Living up to your username there! Might not take the dog with us, but will check it out next time I'm up that way! by cardno85 (Thu 26th Jan 2023 5:47pm)
  • I also use the train a lot, so I'm not the person you replied to. But my view on people not using the train is just that being near a train station isn't a luxury for everyone and if you can't walk to a train station in 10 minutes or so it becomes a lot less of a convenience. Looking at where I am, I can get to a train station in less than 5 minutes walking so it's great, even if they are just every half hour, you can plan your journey nice and easily and go home if there's a cancellation. However if I was to move to , for example, parts of Ralston, it could be a 20-25 minute walk to a train station. If that was the case I'd rarely use it, with a walk of that length the opportunities for it to take longer go up (adding a minute or so if crossing busy roads) so you need to leave earlier and earlier, and so leaving half an hour or more before your train arrives in the weather we have just isn't an option people will go for. by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 9:27am)
  • I suppose my big question here is when they say yoghurt pots, do they mean plastic #5 (Polypropylene) since that's so commonly used in packaging for all sorts of things and generally is quite rigid and takes up a lot of green bin space. If we can get to a situation where people can just be told **all** plastic can go in this bin, it will make a big difference. At the moment people don't want to sift their plastic (I do, but it's a hassle) so either fling it all in the blue bin contaminating the collection or put it in general waste which means bins are overflowing. When the council told us that almost 70% of green bin waste was recyclable I actually wonder how much of that was plastic that *is* recyclable but Glasgow doesn't recylce (as well as any contaminated card or paper waste), I did ask my councillor if they had raw data behind it, but never heard back. I still think this could be a massive leap forward, just really hope it is a change that will actually bring a benefit and not just swapping stuff about without actually changing anything. by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 9:44am)
  • I still think something like SRC is still the right thing in terms of overall governance, but then have more local/community council power for local and community issues. We know that the needs of Glasgow City Centre will not be the same as those of Inveraray, due to population density, environment, etc. But they will need bins collecting, school curriculums, roads, and street lights. So a regional council sorting those things, and allocating funding for local issues to the relevant local council. And on your last point, I would go further and not allow parties. Last council election I had the SNP & Alba telling me about independence, Tory's talking about derailing indepence, greens talking about nationwide policy, and Labour talking about what they will do when they win in Westminster. None of that falls into the remit of Glasgow City Council so it has no impact on my voting intention, so surely that's just a waste of time and money. by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 2:29pm)
  • I have a purple bin that's collected kerbside, as do my parents who live in a different part of Glasgow. They don't have them for flats which seems a little unfair, but there are kerbside collections for glass across GCC areas. by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 2:35pm)
  • It is the case, but due to the supposed random selection, you can be cited during the period you are exempt, you just need to email them and tell them that. by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 3:03pm)
  • Interesting theory this, I have an unusual surname and I've been cited 3 times in the past 4 and a half years, wife (with the same surname obvs) has been cited twice in the same period. There's meat on this! by cardno85 (Fri 27th Jan 2023 3:00pm)

  • >Surprised the council has never just dumped a lorry load of waste and went through it to see how much recycled material is within it. I am sure when they dropped to 3 weekly there was a leaflet which said that roughly 70% of general waste was recyclable. However I have never been able to find the backing data on this despite asking my councillors if they can share this. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if that 70% number is true given the state of bins I see when out walking the dog (both looking at clean boxes hanging over the top of green bins and the amount of non-recyclables in blue bins). However I also like to keep in mind that cardboard/paper is very easily contaminated (especially when mixed with tins and plastic) and also we only recycle plastics 1 & 2 in Glasgow while a massive proportion of packaging and plastic products in shops are plastic number 5, so keen to know the breakdown of plastics that are found in general waste to know if they can actually be recycled with GCC's current resources or they are just saying "well that can be recycled *somewhere* so we'll count it". by cardno85 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 12:07pm)
  • I can't remember that specifically, but I'm a dozy cunt at times. But as much of a hassle it is, it's why I will always support the bin strikes (and others, don't get pedantic). It's an essential service for hygiene and the folk doing it need to be able to do it well and be supported in their job, these cutbacks are just going to end up hurting the folk doing it as well as the public. Absolutely shameful. by cardno85 (Thu 9th Feb 2023 8:48pm)
  • It's not just the council, but they are the ones with the power to make the change (albeit not the funding). What this needs is a really big effort from the ground up.We need enforcement officers with the actual power to fine or impose community orders on offenders. We need more cleansing workers to ensure bin collections are regular, bins aren't overflowing, and streets are swept. We need more street bins, make it easy not to litter and less people will do so. Finally there needs to be a real concerted effort at schools and in the community to educate people into a mindset where littering is not acceptable. But that's very easy to type, not so easy to do in practice. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Feb 2023 1:58pm)
  • As does the Lidl on Renfrew road in Paisley by cardno85 (Wed 22nd Feb 2023 11:09am)
  • That's odd, I've just gone onto the Scotrail app and it lets my buy a single stop ticket from Hillington West to Paisley (it's a trip I often take, and the ticket machine and kiosk are on the other platform so not great if you are in a rush) and that seems to work fine, which is a relief. Not saying you are wrong of course, but I wonder if they have specified certain stations and trips that they aren't allowing people to use the app for. Fully agree inconveniencing the many for the sake of the few is just so short sighted. In fact, if I wasn't able to buy a mobile ticket for that journey I'd just by from the conductor or ticket folk at Gilmour St which means if they aren't there I'd essentially be travelling free but only because of their short sightedness. by cardno85 (Fri 3rd Mar 2023 11:11am)
  • Or, if you are feeling really lazy, they do a bag of pre-cooked and marinated ones in the freezer section (rotisserie or hot & spicy) that cook in the over in 20 minutes. I've had them a couple of times and they are pretty tasty for a quick snack. by cardno85 (Mon 6th Mar 2023 2:59pm)

  • To add to this, traffic and parking during the festival is a bit of a nightmare so I'd avoid that and just take the train. They will be busy, but they only take 45 minutes and run every 15 so it's an easy enough wee trip. Plus it means you can have a pint in Edinburgh. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Mar 2023 11:57am)
  • Renfrewshire Live is also not bad in terms of local events and traffic, I don't read it often, but every so often I get a notification and think "oh, that sounds quite good". Then I don't go because I'm either too lazy or too forgetful. by cardno85 (Tue 21st Mar 2023 3:08pm)
  • To be fair, if you just ask the staff will likely let you have one, doubt they'll ask you to pay for it. Enough glasses are lost to theft and breakage, so, while you could steal one, I have found most bar staff are probably happy enough to give you a clean glass if you just ask. by cardno85 (Fri 24th Mar 2023 3:31pm)

I don't reckon the interest rates will jump up massively again, and likely will start to drop off, but just in case there's another spike would like to make sure my payments stay at a level we are comfortable and we can go into a longer fix if things have recovered in 2 years. by cardno85 (Tue 11th Apr 2023 11:37am)
  • It's completely understandable because the ISPs go to market touting their amazing Wi-Fi coverage from their own routers, and some block the use of 3rd party routers, so it just bites them in the arse when people assume their poor Wi-Fi is because of the ISP themselves and not just the hardware. by cardno85 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 1:54pm)
  • If you can get to Paisley then there's Houston Kiltmakers on the high street not a long walk from Gilmour St, I got my kilt made there and they were really helpful. • Remember thinking that seemed like a good idea, but, if memory serves me right, it was basically just STV with a Glasgow news segment and some rubbish chat show. So never watched it again. Ultimately if it had carried on it would likely have just been Glasgow Live on TV, and nobody really wants that. by cardno85 (Tue 18th Apr 2023 10:51am)
  • Access to the countryside is something that is so underrated (or maybe it just was by me). Since getting our dog we went looking for new places to go for a walk and the amount of places within a 15 minute drive of the house which would make you forget you were near a city is amazing. Just yesterday we were at Glennifer Braes since we were passing and there were periods where we felt like the only people in the world. Really awesome. Just as an aside, I used the AllTrails app to find walks to do and think it's really useful, I have seen that WalkHighlands now have their own app but I've not had much time to play with it lately. by cardno85 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 9:00am)
  • I went there, although I left 20 years ago so it might be very different now. Back then there was a massive push into university, career meetings were essentially going through your grades and telling you which subjects to continue through to get into a good uni, whether you like it or not. I wanted to do some work between school and uni and that wasn't entertained in the slightest and I was pushed down a science and maths route to physics at uni which I inevitably dropped out of since I didn't enjoy it and had no life experience. I liked the social side of having all my pals nearby and the actual lessons and extra curriculars were great, but if the child isn't massively academic then they might struggle. As i say, might have changed now so take my experience with a pinch of salt. by cardno85 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 5:19pm)

  • So I'll preface this with the fact I've googled, but most companies that say they do it seem to be based in England, and give no idea on cost. I've come into possession of my Grandpa's army uniform from his NS back in the late 40s, it has essentially been hanging up in a loft or cupboard for as long as I can remember and I don't want to just hide it away. Has anyone either used online services or know of a place in Glasgow that will be able to frame the tunic and hat (along with maybe a couple of the pictures he took at the time and some documents) in a way that I would be able to hang it up somewhere? by cardno85 (Tue 9th May 2023 10:03am)

  • It's worth asking the GP, although they might not agree it's the best thing for you. I had a water dissolvable NSAIDs that I got in Poland that were great, but they are not approved for use in the UK so the doctor couldn't prescribe it. However, from the way the doctor spoke, I reckon he'd have prescribed it for me if he could. by cardno85 (Wed 10th May 2023 9:23am)

  • Honestly, the writing was on the wall a few years back when GCC decided that the best strategy was to get rid of lots of bins to replace them with fewer, bigger bins. You can see this appealing to the council accounting department, same capacity of rubbish being catered for but with less need to empty, but in practice it just means that bins are never handy. As your linked article says, while it might be a good idea to change people's behaviour, sometimes we need to adapt to the behaviour and not the other way round. by cardno85 (Fri 12th May 2023 9:59am)

  • I have only been once for a rugby game so provisions might be better for football, but, while it's really easy to get to Rugby Park, it was a real nightmare going home. Trains were still running 3 carriages per half hour and so the queue was miles long, we waited an hour to get on a train and there was still a huge queue that didn't get on. by cardno85 (Wed 17th May 2023 11:14am)
  • I always really like going into Paisley, find it cleaner than Glasgow CC, and there's some good pubs and places to get food and a few good wee shops. But then I like going for a pint in the day time so maybe it's a bit more iffy in the evening. by cardno85 (Fri 19th May 2023 2:13pm)
  • So, I did this for a good few years, although only needed to do it 2-3 times a week. I used to take the 7 or 7.15 bus (depending when my bus got into town) and was normally in Gogarburn for about 8.15-8.8.30. So the mornings are actually pretty good, will run close to time, but never early (we have been sat at Ingliston roundabout for 20 minutes since we were running early) and the earlier you leave, the less traffic you will face, and the more likely it will run to time. The problem I found was coming home, if you aren't getting on at the bus depot, you may find buses already full and skipping you, or, if you get on, it can be a sqeeze. Then, depending when you leave, you can run into both Edinburgh and Glasgow rush hours, running 2-3 hours to get back to Glasgow. That can be extended if something's on in Glasgow, or there's an accident. Now, that aside, if you are happy to arrive in Edinburgh potentially half an hour early for work to allow for delays, and you aren't in a rush to get home at night. The bus can be pleasant enough to just chill out, read, scroll through your phone, or nap. But it will take significant time out of your life. Train runs closer to time, but when I was doing it, it was like £24 for a peak return so it wasn't affordable in the long term, especially if you qualify for free bus travel. I would definitely be checking out with the company if there is a possibility to working remotely, the commute is a massive time drain, leaving the house before 6am and lucky to be home by 7pm doesn't leave you a lot of time to enjoy your life. If you can cut that down to a day a week, or arrange different start/finish times to avoid traffic it will make your life easier. by cardno85 (Mon 22nd May 2023 11:02am)
  • Flexi pass is 15% off 5 return journeys, as it stands now that will cost you £117.30 from Queen St to Waverley for 5 return journeys at peak time. Worth factoring that in to your decision against the prospective wage the company are paying, especially if you can get the bus for free. That being said, I moved house and got a car, and even driving my own car was horrendous. I'd leave at 5am to beat the traffic, earliest I could leave the office was 4.30pm so often wasn't home until 7pm. Would I have kept it up if I could have negotiated leaving at about 2 or 3pm? Potentially for a while longer than I did, but I didn't think it was sustainable for me long term. For me personally, I don't think I'd ever take a job again that involved a regular edinburgh commute unless I could expense trains and work to flexible hours, but it's horses for courses you know. That all goes for the bus as well though, if you have something you are keen to study, or an interest that will work with patchy wi-fi or on paper, you can get a lot of time to focus while on bus journeys so you could get more value from the bus commute than I did (despite me reading LOADS of books which was nice). by cardno85 (Mon 22nd May 2023 5:51pm)

  • Strangely, even though I moved from a tenement to a house 5 years ago, I still miss the noise and the buzz of things going on. The neighbour upstairs used to do his hoovering on a Friday evening at around 5ish which reminded me to finish up work. There was some mad arguments through the wall which was like having live River City going on. Ground floor door opening and closing with faint music meant they were having a bit of a sesh so I'd pop down with a bottle (only after getting to know them of course). It was a nice wee community. I suppose if I lived in a close that had really rowdy parties at all hours, arsehole neighbours, etc. it might have been a bit of a pain, but there is comfort in the sounds of living around people. by cardno85 (Tue 23rd May 2023 5:38pm)

  • Most have already been mentioned, but Paisley have a small farmer's market on the 2nd and last Saturday of each month if the others aren't on. It's a 10 minute train journey from Central Station so not a massive travel burden. Worth asking though, what is your expectation of a farmer's market? Around the world they can vary wildly, so in Glasgow it's generally smaller affairs, likely with a couple of meat stalls, some fresh veg, then coffee and some miscellaneous (cheese, salami, etc), they aren't the big food fair type things you might see elsewhere. If there's something specific you are hoping to find, there might be better places than farmer's markets to get them. by cardno85 (Thu 25th May 2023 10:40am)
  • Now, I might be misremembering since I don't think I ever arrived without being a wee bit tipsy, but I am sure there used to be a club on the top floor of Royal Exchange Sq where the private members place is now. Did Northern Soul nights and drinks were under a pound, really good wee spot and always seemed to be a great crowd. In terms of the subclub, I wasn't aware of a moving floor, but I remember folk telling me there used to be a wee cross on the dancefloor that indicated the exact point where the sound was the best. Always forgot to check when I went in though. by cardno85 (Wed 31st May 2023 10:38am)
  • They don't do car share, but I find the Renfrewshire Cabs app is better for stuff around Paisley/Renfrew and the app is similar to Uber. I have found them cheaper than Uber too. by cardno85 (Thu 15th Jun 2023 10:33am)
  • So I suppose for Uber in Renfrewshire it's just luck whether there is a Glasgow Uber dropping off nearby to get one. Probably best to stick with the local one since they are registered there, but to be honest, getting a taxi reliably these days is hit and miss. by cardno85 (Thu 15th Jun 2023 11:06am)
  • And most of the cars hanging about the airport are going to be going for someone to pick up at the airport. They aren't wanting to go all the way into Renfrew. I agree with your advice, I'm not in Renfrew, but I'm Paisley adjacent but still within Glasgow. I normally use black cabs because I've got the dog with me if I'm going into the west end, and then I take a train to the centre because it's cheaper and quicker (and I'm too old to be thinking of coming home after the last train!!) by cardno85 (Thu 15th Jun 2023 11:54am)
  • I was talking to my wife about this yesterday as we were in the taxi to the run. In terms of sustainability it's not ideal that it's really hard to use public transport to get there. From Hillington West the earliest train was 9.02 which would get us to Partick at 9.41 so that's no use. Bus would be 54 minutes (provided it turns up) and that's including a 30 minute walk. That's why we ended up with a taxi instead and took the train home after a pint. Luckily for me though, I'm really slow, so my wife was able to take a train into town from Partick and was already browsing shops by the time I was making my way to the halfway mark! by cardno85 (Mon 19th Jun 2023 10:58am)
  • That is scarily close to a GL article, the structure and, especially, the last paragraph really seem like it's been copied and pasted off the site. Makes you wonder how much they are using AI to churn out articles. In fact, is that why the writers are credited as "Nostalgia Editor" and various editor roles, because essentially they are just picking and curating various AI articles and publishing to the site. by cardno85 (Wed 21st Jun 2023 10:38am)
  • When you say morning tea, are you meaning just a breakfast to have with tea or kind of like an afternoon tea but in the morning? It's not likely to be something you would have with the latter, but most cafes do hot rolls (filling is hot, not the roll) and you can have tea. Most common filing is a square sausage (Lorne on some menus), although I like bacon, black pudding and fried egg. You are right that they are quite dry, and they aren't commonly eaten alone, you get your moisture from the fillings. They have a distinctive flavour and add some great texture. Out of curiosity, where are you visiting from? Just asking as it might help in adding context to what might be a difference to a normal breakfast food wherever you are. by cardno85 (Wed 21st Jun 2023 1:33pm)
  • To me, that looks rather tasty, I like a savoury croissant and that seems to give you the best of both worlds in terms of breakfast and an afternoon tea. That being said, I can almost guarantee those rolls will likely be small brioche rolls and not Mortons rolls. Morton's rolls are as per the below picture, really crispy on the outside, while a bit chewy on the inside with large air bubbles. If you are wanting to try them, you likely won't find them as part of a "tea" but if you ask in the place where you get this they might do filled Morton's rolls so you could ask for one on the side. It will be really different to Norwegian bread, not saying better or worse (I just like bread, in pretty much all it's forms!), but different is good. You could also pop into a shop for a loaf of Mother's Pride Plain Bread which is a traditional type of bread and quite unique to Scotland these days. https://preview.redd.it/u4swlg3ndd7b1.png?width=1818&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=e0abb386b78ef2a00d4b91a4ae4a497db88cbc70 by cardno85 (Wed 21st Jun 2023 2:34pm)
  • Slanj is also in town and they will have a selection too. Also, while not central, Houston Kiltmakers are in Paisley which is a short train ride away, I got myself a lovely deer leather sporran in there that was made, surprisingly, in Barrhead. So it's more local than a lot of the ones you see in shops. Not sure how widely they are stocked. One thing worth noting though is that a fair number of more formal sporrans are made with seal skin and that isn't allowed to be imported to the states. There's always a chance that customs won't check your luggage and you will get away with it, but I would prefer not to have the stress while travelling. So make sure and ask when you are buying it what it's made out of. by cardno85 (Mon 26th Jun 2023 3:45pm)
  • Some Farmfoods have them at £3.50 for a big pack, but stock isn't consistent. • I disagree with him having a point, buses run on roads and can be re-routed where there are roadworks. Trains and the subway can't take divert from their rails so if maintenance is required it needs lines closed to do so, night time is quietest and so that's been chosen. Also, buses, especially electric ones, don't cause as much noise and vibration to people who are likely sleeping through the night. Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't have better operating hours for trains and, especially, the subway, but he's comparing apples and oranges. Buses around the world operate more flexible routes and times than trains, trams and metros because that's what they are there for. by cardno85 (Thu 13th Jul 2023 12:28pm)
  • I said in my comment that we should have better operating hours for trains and the subway (especially the subway was what I said, it's right there). That being said, it is only the subway that closes at 6 and only on a Sunday, for the remainder of the week, and all week for the trains, it operates on a similar schedule to London Underground (which generally runs a schedule of partial closures for maintenance). The Sunday Subway thing is really poor and I don't think anyone can disagree on that, I don't know why they can't run a single circle and alternate each Sunday to allow the the maintenance but I'm not a rail engineer so am not really qualified to comment. That being said, it still doesn't take away from the point that Mr First (forgot his name) is trying to make. Most days the trains and subways operate to within an hour of all but 11 buses (the ones being taken away). Taking into account the massive infrastructure differences between buses and trains I still think his point is pretty disingenuous. by cardno85 (Thu 13th Jul 2023 4:32pm)

  • They didn't do a great job securing the unit next to subway, walked by one day with the dog and you couldn't see in front of you because there was so much dust coming out. But I have been by when they aren't working and you can see some really nice old tiles and stuff visible, so I'll put up with breathing in a bunch of dust on the occasional time I go past on the way for a pint. by cardno85 (Fri 14th Jul 2023 11:47am)
  • Although could they not do maintenance on one circle at a time and keep the other one running. That being said, a 24hr subway would be a right pain for anyone living on the line. I reckon the reasonable expectation is for the subway to run the same times 7 days a week with circle closures for maintenance every now and then. by cardno85 (Sat 22nd Jul 2023 4:58pm)

  • Agreed mostly, airports (aside from a few like Changi or Dubai) are just a means to a destination. I've not had major issues with queing at Glasgow, but there a physical limit to how many people can pass an area at any one time so if flights are scheduled close together there are going to be queues. I think as long as the queue is moving it's not an issue. I think there are areas for improvement (or really, just modernisation) within the building, but, while flights continue to be scheduled close to each other with massive quiet periods, there are always going to be queues because there would be huge complaints about wasted money if we had 50 immigration places open all day when there are only small periods of queuing. I do think there needs to be major improvement to the transport infrastructure though. Bearing in mind a number of people may be arriving in Scotland for the first time. Now a train would be lovely, but let's be more realistic: there should be much clearer signage for the buses. There is a couple of screens with bus numbers and times next to domestic arrivals, but nothing at international. It wouldn't cost much to colour code bus stances and put in a big poster saying "Red for express to Glasgow", "Purple to Paisley", etc at all the exits and really simplify timetables at the stances. I also think the airport taxis, given they have been given a contract to pick up at the terminal, should be contracted to abide by flight times. I've arrived a number of times on the later flights into Glasgow and there are no private hires accepting and no airport cabs at the ranks, finally one airport cab arrived and radioed in to say there was a massive queue and it took about 30-40 minutes for the cars to start arriving. That's not acceptable when the flights are scheduled and arrival times published. by cardno85 (Fri 28th Jul 2023 10:01am)

  • In addition to Benmore botanic garden, there's also Ardkindlas Woodland Garden which is lovely to walk through. It's a little bit out of the way but if you go past Inveraray on the way to Lochgilphead about a mile down is Auchindrain Farm Museum which is really good, it's an outdoor museum exploring the history of farmining in the area, dog friendly too. If you like Whisky then the public bar at the George in Inveraray has a really eclectic selection of malts which you rarely see anywhere else so it's worth dropping in. Fyne Ales has a good tap room which is worth a trip and there's some good walking routes round that area. On the way back towards Loch Lomond there is a wee sign for the "honeymoon bridge" which, although the bridge isn't up to much, going up the hill on the forestry path and you get really great views of Loch Lomond. There's so much to do in that part of the world, just enjoy exploring about and dropping off in places. Just one note to keep in mind with the warm weather, there are a fair few ticks about at the moment so take relevant precautions when walking off the beaten track. We were on a walk in Lochgoilhead back in June and the dog and I both picked up a couple and that was keeping to the paths so it's worth getting some repellant, tick removers, and have a wee check over yourselves when you get off the trails. by cardno85 (Thu 10th Aug 2023 3:28pm)

  • Interestingly in Krakow a good few years ago they turned the traffic lights off at 3 major junctions (assuming it was publicised somewhere but I didn't drive so probably missed it). Essentially priority seems to go Trams>Pedestrians>Cars and it makes such a good experience for a pedestrian/public transport user (and, I'd imagine, an absolute nightmare for cars, probably encouraging people that need to go into the city to take the excellent public transport). Now, this isn't a public transport post, but a driving one. So it's also worth pointing out that Polish police are perfectly happy to dole out heavy fines to motorists (and pedestrians who are not using crossings) so drivers are more likely to heed the crossings since they will expect there to be pedestrians there (unlike here where people can cross wherever) so approach a little slower and allow people to cross. To have something like that here would require an entire overhaul not just in public transport, but in the entire culture of drivers and pedestrians which will need a lot of manpower to police initially. by cardno85 (Mon 11th Sep 2023 10:59am)
  • Communication is an absolute shambles, I wouldn't know the Clyde metro project was even a thing if I wasn't on this sub. In terms of the benefits and impacts, that should be clear to anyone who sees the plans, but who are getting to see them? Also, the last update seems to be from March this year, it says it's a 30 year project but there's no detail around phases, or what we might see when. So for a lot of people they will see this and think "well, that's never going to happen". This is such a big project and could change so many people's lives it wouldn't cost them much to have regular updates on what's going on so people don't think it's all blue sky thinking. by cardno85 (Mon 11th Sep 2023 11:33am)
  • So, if we are talking *in* Glasgow with money being no object then I'd take 57 and 57a Partickhill Road and convert them back into one villa. It's easy walking distance to Partick and Byres Rd but with large enough grounds you would feel quite out the way. Also, you get a good bit of exercise walking back from home from most directions. I also like the modern terraced sandstone houses at the back of Cottiers on Highburgh Road. Thinking about around Glasgow, there are some absolutely ridiculous mansions around Paisley with huge grounds, so I'd probably get one of them as it's walking distance to the Keg and Gilmour St for getting around (although if money's no object I'm probably just getting a driver to take me anywhere). by cardno85 (Thu 14th Sep 2023 5:22pm)
  • First time I saw the super off peak it took ages googling my specific services to work out which are super off peak and which are just off peak, it's massively unclear. And, as you say, if I'm getting a return into town, I'm not 100% sure what time I'm coming home, might want to stop for a pint or food. I generally just get myself a standard off-peak (luckily my train is only 3 stops from Central so it makes little difference). That being said, with the scrapping of peak fares, they are also scrapping super off-peak so there will just be one all day fare which will make this easier (and hopefully you won't have to pick your departure and return times in the app because of this). by cardno85 (Thu 14th Sep 2023 5:25pm)

Could be the person on the phone just went along a script and if you are actually there in hospital with a sharps box they might take it from you. • >The council should really publish every route that's contaminated and the reason it went to landfill. I would LOVE this, really useful data to improve education in areas that are really poor for contamination. That being said, given the state of all comms from GCC they would likely make an arse of that too. Their "easy" instructions for dry recycling is a limited list of examples but you have to actually go digging for what Glasgow actually recycle (cartons are listed as an example of general waste and not to be recycled, but a lot of supermarkets have upped their game and moved to plastics 1 & 2 for cartons so they can be recycled). I don't know why they wouldn't just have it in big letters in the guide that you can recycle plastics 1 & 2, those numbers are also on all the packaging! It was the same with the GW changing to 3 weekly, shite comms saying that most bins aren't full and those that are, are actually full of recyclables. Having non-full bins is surely better since they aren't going to be too heavy so they get broken on the truck or make life difficult for the cleansing teams. Not to mention that people generally don't do all their binning the same way, if I'm doing a big spring clean I'll likley have more bulky items going in so would like a bit of space. I severly doubt their 60% figure of recyclable material in the GW bins, the raw data behind this figure was never published. Did they actually check every piece of plastic that came out, checked that every piece of cardboard or paper was uncontaminated, that all organic waste was acceptable in the brown bins (no soil, animal waste, etc.). Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there, but I would love the contaminated waste data to be shared and used to really help people understand what's preventing their bins from being recycled, because I'm sure most people want to do the right thing. Like an overall view of the most common contaminated items that ruin truck loads so that's something for people to look out for in general, then some more in depth advice for areas that have a large portion of contaminated loads. by cardno85 (Mon 25th Sep 2023 4:24pm)
  • Wondering if anyone knows much about 5G towers (technical info, I've not got my tin foil hat out!)? Just had one put up somewhat near the house, and, even standing in clear view of it there is no impact to my phone signal. So is there a resource which will advise if it's active and, if so, which network it works for (is that still a thing?)? Also, I noticed that at the bottom of the 4 panels the cables are quite visible, given the weather we get here is there no risk of damage to these limiting the effectiveness of the tower? by cardno85 (Tue 26th Sep 2023 9:51am)
  • Given the nature of stuff in the blue bin, I also normally feel quite comfortable sticking on some boots, holding onto the fence, and just getting in and stamping it down. Cardboard, plastic and cans really squeeze down pretty well if you get the right weight on them. by cardno85 (Tue 26th Sep 2023 10:13am)
  • I get the argument that it forces people to pay more attention to what they are putting in GW to ensure they are maximising their recycling output. I was really more ranting at the poor comms from GCC, on one side they are saying a large % are not full and that's why they are reducing the collection. Then on another side they are saying that 60-70% of GW was actually recyclable (without the data to know if that's actually true or if someone was just going "aye, that's plastic" and it's a tick in the recyclable box without checking the type of plastic). It's just poor messaging, I'd actually have been happier if they said "we're cutting the collections because we are having a budget nightmare, sorry guys". Mixed messaging gives the impression of being dishonest. by cardno85 (Tue 26th Sep 2023 12:50pm)

Her's got accepted although it took a number of attempts (but passport photos can be like that because they don't want anyone showing human expression!). Alternatively with UK passports you can take your own photo on your phone with a blank background, not sure if that's an option with Polish passports though. by cardno85 (Fri 13th Oct 2023 4:35pm)
  • Now I'm not a sociologist or anything like that, but round where I am it seems to be younger kids that are the most feral and I wonder if this stems from a generation of kids socialising online for a large part and then COVID giving them no opportunity to face real world consequences to their arseholery, so now they feel invincible? I'm sure back in the day, groups of neds had a varied age range with older ones both protecting and keeping younger ones in line. Not saying we need to get some old neds out of retirement or that it's not the kids fault, but thinking there are reasons behind the recent escalation in shite bahviour and maybe someone smarter than me can work out how we use that information to curb it back down. Also not making excuses for parents, or saying it's in any way fact, but I could imagine being stuck in a property with a child that's climbing the walls during COVID would have people just give up and tune it out and when the world opened up again they were too far gone to sort out. by cardno85 (Fri 13th Oct 2023 5:03pm)
  • Now I didn't say selfie, I said you can use your phone for UK passports which is completely true, supported within the online passport application, and in the government guidance. So you are right to say a selfie is a hard pass, but wrong for implying phones can't be used for passport photos. Here's the guidance: https://www.gov.uk/photos-for-passports Not that this makes a difference because I did some digging into Polish requirements and it looks like they need a printed photo so it's not an option. Someone from security said it was due to someone still being familiar to staff could allow them unauthorised access to non-customer areas, but he thought it was really because they were more likely to be slung freebies by the bar staff they knew. Not sure if that's at all justifiable or even true, I only went in once after I finished in there years on after management changed so didn't get to test it out. by cardno85 (Tue 17th Oct 2023 2:41pm)

  • As people have said, it's only available on prescription and prescriptions are free. That being said, colchicine is obviously something that's used to treat gout flares (although I much prefer naproxen since it doesn't have the arse shredding side effects associated with colchicine), if you are going to a GP for a prescription, you want to have a word with them about getting your uric acid levels checked and get yourself on Allupurinol ASAP. Prevention is infinately better than treatment, and it's been proven that lifestyle factors alone cannot lower uric acid levels enough to fully prevent gout flares. It sounds a bit worrying knowing you will likely be on meds for the rest of your life, and I put off Allopurinol for a good while because of this, but being able to eat and drink what I want without worrying about a flare has been a massive life improvement! Also, check our r/gout which has lots of great advice. by cardno85 (Thu 26th Oct 2023 10:42am)
  • My parents are really the only ones who I hear regularly use it. Connectivity is great if something goes wrong but you don't need it to be accurate, if I'm meeting someone in town I know I'm taking the 16.46 train that gets in at 16.57 and Drury St is a 2 minute walk away so I'll meet them at 5. If I'm visiting my mum I know I'll get in the car at half 12 and it takes 14 minutes to get there so I'll tell her I'll be there at quarter to. "Back of" is just lazy timekeeping in my book! by cardno85 (Sat 28th Oct 2023 10:20am)
  • Used to use black cabs, but they changed their app so it's now like all the rest where they will just request a cab 5-10 minutes before your booked time. As I understand it, Saltire Private Hire will actually pre-book a car so that's who I've been using lately and they have all turned up for early morning flights. That being said, the last trip I had with them was not great, and I'm struggling to get a receipt through the app or email so can't claim it back, but could just be a one off. Also, if you happen to be arriving at Glasgow Airport, I've found Renfrewshire Cabs to be the best and quickest for pick ups there. by cardno85 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 10:59am)

If they can't see in, they don't know if there's actually anything valuable or if there's a dog waiting for them, so will skip it. Safer to break into somewhere they can clearly see is empty and has stuff they can get rid of. Not saying that it's foolproof, if you are storing a bunch of Rembrandts or something and a burglar knows about and wants them, they will find a way. But for the chancer (which I understand is a majority of house breakings) it's enough to make them look elsewhere. by cardno85 (Tue 7th Nov 2023 1:47pm)
  • I've never had an issue with getting a black cab on Christmas day (travelling with our dog so black cabs are just much easier as most accept them) to get over to my mum and dad's. It's more expensive than normal, but then it's Christmas, you pay through the nose for most things since it's a major holiday. Booking ahead on most apps, including black cabs, just releases the job 5-10 minutes before the booked time. If you need to be there by a set time, I'd order one at least 30 minutes before as long as the family don't mind you being early (I normally help my mum setting stuff up and with bits of cooking so being early isn't an issue). by cardno85 (Thu 9th Nov 2023 11:27am)

I don't even work in comms and could have put together something better than their "we're shutting everything and putting up council tax" graphic earlier this year! My trusty dog walking jacket from Mountain Warehouse is on it's last legs and I was planning on just buying the same again since it's done me a solid 4 years of daily use, but they don't do it any more and now seem to be all about 3in1 jackets and showerproof ski jackets which are too heavy and not very waterproof.
