  • From reading your post, you have a plan! I’m sorry I can’t give you the right advice to help you get there, but you are past the hardest part - you know what you want. You are doing really well to get this far - keep going to that dream. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 13th Jan 2019 1:38am)

  • Once Upon a Whisky do whisky walking tours in town. The Good Spirits Company also do regular tastings and will talk about whisky all day if you just visit the shop. Hillhead and the surrounding areas would be a good base for visit. It’s on the tube that gives you great access to the city centre. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 15th Jan 2019 7:13am)

  • I promise I’m not being a prick or on the wind up, but have you tried it in a few different sockets, and also changed the fuse? If you’ve moved house, it might be a broken socket in the new place, or the fuse in the plug has blown. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 22nd Jan 2019 11:19pm)
  • BBC Studios do a tour - £20 for you and a child, but next slot available is March. Glasgow Film Festival is 20th Feb to 3rd March but the really good stuff sells out quick. There’s usually some good stuff for kids. Lego do a few really good sets to make stop motion films with (link below is £15). There’s a free app that uses a tablet or phone and the set has backgrounds and Lego pieces to use in the films. They just released a new movie maker set to tie in with the new Lego movie (£45 though) which is out at the start of Feb - cinema trip plus a visit to the Lego shop would be in budget? • Less than a day without water was a total pain in the arse. No kettle, no toilet, no shower or bath. Fixed now. I’m going to have one less pint this weekend and give some money to a water charity. Then I’ll treat myself to an extra pint for doing a good deed. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 23rd Jan 2019 12:00am)

  • Just pester the nursery. We started getting the 16 hours when ours turned 3. I’m not totally sure, but I think it started the first term after his 3rd birthday. For the first few terms, they gave us a cheque, but for the last 3 terms the nursery get paid by the council and they have reduced our fees. We don’t see any money. We just got a letter from the council, as we have each term before, which we have to sign and hand back in to the nursery to get the funds released to them. Bear in mind, if your nursery is Glasgow City Council but you live in another local authority, it will be different. Ask to speak to the nursery manager - the nursery staff won’t have much to do with it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 25th Jan 2019 12:34pm)
  • This is solid advice - go and find it. It’s more likely you can find something longer term this way too. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 30th Jan 2019 8:16am)
  • I’d be careful with this - it’s been going round the internet for while that private fines are not enforceable in Scotland, but if there’s clear signage, you enter in to a contract and it’s your job to prove the signage wasn’t clear or misleading. You could ignore it and hope they don’t bother to take you to court, but these companies do this for a living, so it’s worth their time to chase you up as they will probably win. [Citizens Advice Scotland](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/law-and-courts/parking-tickets/appealing-parking-tickets/parking-tickets-on-private-land-s/) by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 1st Feb 2019 9:54am)
  • So is it better to ignore it, or should you respond to the company stating you are unable to confirm who was driving at the time? I’m not being an arsehole here, genuinely would like to know if there is a defence in case it happens again - this is valuable info. Fucking love Scots law, just for being a wee bit different. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 1st Feb 2019 6:46pm)
  • My mum stayed on Niddrie Road for a while, the end near the park. It was a nice close and she didn’t get too much bother. The issues she did have was mainly in the summer with drunk folk coming out the park - she had folk pissing in her front garden a lot and caught a guy taking a shite once. The other end of Niddrie Road was a bit weird. I think there used to be a bit of bother around that wee furniture shop opposite Arnold Clark. She moved out about 3 years ago though. I think overall it’s getting better, not worse. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 5th Feb 2019 8:33am)

  • It’s not the whole close, just our bit at the bottom. It’s about £800 for a space not much bigger than a living room. I could do it, just don’t know what paint is on it already. I just resent any quote they give us as they always use the same contractors, and having dealt with factors commercially, there is a lot of back scratching goes on. Factors are cunts, but that’s another discussion. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 15th Feb 2019 2:59pm)
  • The council are giving up on food waste bins for tenements. Too much of it is contaminated with other waste and there is no way to tell who is at fault. If one load is contaminated, then put on the truck, the whole truck is useless. Council will still collect from houses - if you put the wrong stuff in, they know who did it. Then they break your legs on your way to work by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 28th Feb 2019 12:27am)
  • Just watch with trade sales - not this company, but any company selling a car as a trade sale. Basically a contract between two traders that waives the warranty. If you are Mr J Bloggs that buys a car, you have rights. If you’re J Bloggs Car Dealers, you’re fucked. I know nothing about this company, but be wary of trade sales in general. Also, Arnold Clark are gold plated cunts. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 28th Feb 2019 12:39am)

  • We used City Parking - between £4.50 and £6 a day depending on where you use and how long you buy the pass for. We had a pass for Cambridge Street, Concert Square and Cadogan Street (moved as I moved jobs). They only have capacity at Duke St at the moment, but they have a waiting list which usually was a couple of months. Car parks always had spaces and were good as far as car parks go. http://www.cityparkingglasgow.co.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2150 NCP and Q park are very expensive. A lot of the offices down by Broomielaw have discounted parking passes you can get by the day. Pick them up from reception - I used to brass neck it and get one from an office on Robertson Street until they stopped leaving them on the edge of the desk. You put the voucher in after your ticket and it reduces the price to £7. Used it at the NCP on Oswald Street - it is the worst car park in the world by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 30th Mar 2019 7:27am)

  • I think it’s a good shout. If you use the back doors, there’s no steps to go up and there are lifts inside. Ground floor is best bet with the wee ones - full of stuffed animals including elephant and giraffe. Upper floors are mainly artwork, sculpture and paintings so maybe not as interesting. It’s got a better cafe than transport museum, but not as good baby changing - not terrible, but Transport Museum is a more modern building, so has better things like this. It will be mobbed on the weekend, and probably through the week during school holidays - Dippy the Dinosaur skeleton is in exhibit - we went a few weeks ago and it was heaving. Might have quietened down a bit now. There’s a good playground just over the road in Kelvingrove too. Go through the gates to the park, next to the tennis courts and turn first left - it’s just behind the skate park. As for annoying folk, it’s full of kids and family friendly. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 4th Apr 2019 8:19am)

  • You have your answer here, but the duty free has a reasonable choice of whisky. You probably wouldn’t find anything very rare or limited bottling. There are also quite a few brands that make a specific version that I have only seen in duty free- Jura and Highland Park most often. You can reserve and collect online, so would give you an idea of what you can get before you are stuck the wrong side of security. If you’re flying out of Europe, you get the international price so you might get a few bargains. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 27th Apr 2019 7:19pm)

  • Try Decathlon out at Braehead, it’s pretty good quality and not too pricy. I got a Vango tent and 2 really good sleeping bags (3 season) from Blacks on Argyle Street for £80 during a sale. • There are some terrible flats on that street. My ex lived in one and it was a shit hole. Restaurant below it - if it had set on fire, everyone would have been toast. I would avoid an unregistered landlord at all costs. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 24th May 2019 7:57am)
  • Flat had bars on the windows and was like a rabbit warren. You’re more likely to have a takeaway set on fire than another flat or a corner shop. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 24th May 2019 8:06am)
  • I agree, bit of a weird first thought, until I saw the bars on the windows and difficult exit routes. The year I moved to Glasgow, 2 students died in a flat fire - no smoke alarms, bars on windows. There was a lot of coverage about unlicensed landlords and I think the council changed criteria as a result. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/rental-ban-rogue-landlord-renting-12304675.amp I admit it seems a strange first thought, but this always stuck in my mind. My issue is with unlicensed landlords (and the issues of not complying with laws that are there to save your life), and not the takeaway specifically. A more important issue for the OP - an unlicensed landlord answers to nobody, so is not likely to repair anything, and you will probably not see your deposit again. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 24th May 2019 9:06am)

  • Nothing to do with hookers and Red Light Districts. It used to be opened all the time, until about 7-8 years ago. It was treated like a rubbish bin by office workers having their lunch on nice days. Now it does get opened over the summer. There has to be a few nice days in a row before it is opened, because there are groundskeepers that look after it and patrol when it is open. (I assume it isn’t financially viable to have someone patrolling every day, when it pisses down so often). This place is maintained very well and the issue in the past has been the hard work in the spring (planting bulbs and shrubs etc) is undone in a few days by fuckers ruining it. The final straw, as I remember, was during the Occupy protests against the banks. George Square was occupied by tents and protestors who eventually got moved on (someone was raped in the protestors camp in George Square, and shortly after it was moved due to Remembrance Day events). They relocated to the Blythswood Square Garden (https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.scotsman.com/news-2-15012/occupy-glasgow-protesters-set-up-new-camp-in-blythswood-square-1-1971321/amp-) They fucking wrecked the place. Folk were shitting in the flower beds. Place got closed permanently once the protestors were moved on. It’s not the only private residents garden in Glasgow. I don’t think it is necessarily right that our ‘Dear Green Places’ cannot be enjoyed by the people, but if it was my money getting wasted by repeatedly replacing the hard work put in to making a nice space, I’d fucking close it too. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 4th Jun 2019 10:36pm)

If you see something you like, it might be worth checking how much it would be to fly from Manchester or another English airport - schools haven’t finished down there yet. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 1st Jul 2019 9:33pm)
  • Also, I like the app Lucky Trip. Set a budget, a date and where you want to fly from and it gives you a choice of locations with a number of hotels and activity for each - same idea as all the other sites but it’s a nice app to use. • I’ve had BT, EE and Sky. BT is the best router I’ve had - live in a tenement with thick walls and BT was the only one that had a signal throughout the flat. Also most reliable. Shop around for the best deal - lots of cash back sites will give you some pretty good payments for going through them, and lots of providers giving away Alexas, headphones, Sonos etc by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 8th Jul 2019 12:24pm)

  • Good on you for being a landlord with a conscience. I think your tenant is abusing your understanding attitude now. There are plenty other potential tenants out there in difficult situations who will fall over themselves for a landlord like you - give someone else a chance who won’t take the piss. You have already been tolerant, and taking a punt on a new tenant who appreciates the opportunity you are giving them could make a big difference to someone’s life. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 19th Jul 2019 7:37am)

Can was a bit swollen so I left it in the fridge for a while and cracked it tonight after a hard day. Still fizzy and tasted magic. • It was for Scotland Homecoming in 2009 From the timeline on the Irn Bru website - “Five million IRN-BRU heritage cans – enough for everyone in Scotland – were produced as part of ‘Homecoming’. They featured the IRN-BRU logo that was first introduced in 1947, when the spelling of Barr’s IRON BREW was changed to Barr’s IRN-BRU for the first time. Former Chairman Robin Barr and original IRN-BRU delivery boy, Jimmy Allen, now 87, unveiled the can in Callendar Park in Falkirk.” by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 30th Jul 2019 7:22am)
  • Phoenix Multiservice at the bottom of Byres Road can do them properly - it’s at the junction of Chruch Street and Byres Road, opposite the old hospital. I paid £50 for mine and he did a good job. Macs on Sauchiehall Street might do them - don’t know for sure - but they’re worth a try. The guys in there are cracking and really helpful. • I got a ticket last month for being in a loading bay - whilst loading my van. Was there for 14 mins total. I appealed it and am waiting to hear. The email I got back said to wait 20 working days. I did and heard nothing so called them. Someone answered after 25 mins on hold and said there is an 8 week turnaround for appeals. They keep the fine at £30 whilst under appeal. Definitely appeal this (was there any yellow lines on the road?), but don’t expect a swift response. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 9th Aug 2019 6:25pm)

  • Definitely appeal - you won’t lose the ability to pay at half rate. It goes on hold until e appeal is dealt with and even then, if you lose, you have 14 days to pay at the £30 rate. I appealed one the other day I got for parking in a loading bay for 13 mins - fair do’s I suppose but they don’t state how long counts as loading. Their issue was that I was not ‘continuously loading’. Turn around for appeals is 8-12 weeks at the moment. Do it online so you have a digital record of the correspondence. Good luck! by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 13th Nov 2019 5:54pm)
  • Bar tending here is different to most other countries and probably in Canada too. It’s not great pay and you will not get much in tips. Bar staff tend to be younger and it’s not seen as a long term career like in other countries, hence the pay is lower. It is not customary to tip for drinks here, unless it is Christmas or New Year. At best you might get a friendly regular telling you to ‘take one for yourself’ which means take a couple of quid out of the change. A bar that just sells drinks is a pub. Bars and restaurants that serve food (waiter service) will take on bartenders and might want more experience than a pub - knowledge of cocktails and wine etc. You would tend to get better tips in these places, as it is more common to tip after a meal, and most places pool tips with the bar staff, waiting and kitchen staff. As standard, we don’t leave as large a percentage as Canada and the USA, and some folk just don’t tip at all. Waiting staff will be paid about the same as bar staff, but tips will be much better in somewhere that serves food than somewhere that just does drinks. You could double or triple your wages on a good night in a nice restaurant. Having said that, I worked in pubs for years and made lifelong friends. It is the quickest way to meet people when you move to a new city. Glasgow is full of pubs and bars, some chains and some independent. Avoid working for anywhere called Wetherspoons. There’s a concentration of independent places in Finnieston, Merchant City, West End and the Southside. Probably easier to try and work closer to where you will live so you don’t spend wage money on travel home late at night. It’s unlikely you could get a job before you arrive, so the easiest way would be to try a few places as a customer when you arrive. Chat to the staff and let them know you’re looking for work - it’s not a big city and lots of folk working in bars will have worked in a few of them, so will know who might be hiring. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 27th Dec 2019 12:43am)
  • You don’t need a licence to work in a bar in Glasgow - the bar needs a licence to trade, and that is attached to a licence holder (usually owner or manager), but the staff don’t need one. Experience will always be better that not having it, but as long as you’re 18, you could find something pretty easily. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 27th Dec 2019 12:50am)

From a buyers point of view they were very good and I’ve heard a lot of people since say good things about them (which is unusual for estate agents). Their website says they are still working 7 days a week, all staff working from home. • I’ve worked on sites for a few house builders. You would be surprised what corners are cut just to get stuff done. As one of the posts on a link above mentions, quality varies massively between sites and even houses on sites. The building companies want to return a profit and that filters down through every trade on site, who are all trying to maximise the amount of money they get at the end of the week. If you go new build, off plan, there’s no way to know what you’ll get. A big benefit is that if something goes wrong, you have the NHBC guarantee, but it seems from comments here that the after sales service from companies varies. It might make you feel uncomfortable, but be prepared to haggle and be cheeky - I can’t see loads of folk rushing out to buy new houses at the moment, so ask for things thrown in, upgraded etc. Remember a lot of new builds don’t come with flooring, grass etc. Then ask for a chunk off the price too. I have a few pals that are 5-6 years in to living in new estates. They lived without roads for 2 years, as they were first phase, plus the construction noise of the other phases going up. Couldn’t get decent internet for the first 2 years either as there was no fibre exchange. Prepare to have to decorate after a year or two - they’re all painted with cheap shite that will look like crap very quickly. They biggest issue my pal has is trying to sell his 5 year old house. He’s outgrown it and wants a bigger one. The plot is so small and tight to next door, there’s no room to extend. Nobody wants to buy his house, because they keep adding new phases to the estate - there’s better deals on a new build with incentives that buying a 5 year old one. I think some folk now won’t live in ‘2nd hand houses’ (I’ve heard more than one person say this). He’s looking at a hefty loss. Plan a good few years ahead before you take the plunge. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 10th Jun 2020 2:25pm)
  • I’ve got one of these - https://www.rok.coffee/ - and I’m really happy with it. Nothing to go wrong or break really. Makes really good espresso but obviously no milk option. It’s one of the only ones that can develop enough pressure to get a proper crema on the espresso. The plug in machines in my budget weren’t powerful enough. I have this grinder - https://www.delonghi.com/en-gb/products/coffee/coffee-makers/grinders/kg79-0177111028 - you can adjust the front and quantity. Both have given me nearly 10 years of service with no problems. Also, I have read this back, and am aware that it makes me sound like a prick. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 12th Jun 2020 12:13am)
  • You can get down to the Kelvin at Kelvinbridge at quite a few places. If you go down the steps at Inn Deep and turn left at the bottom, there’s a pebble beach about 150m up the Kelvin Walkway you could launch from - there’s a weir so you could go in either direction. It’s a bit faster flowing heading North, but it can be a bit shallow in places, especially during the warm weather. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 18th Jun 2020 8:19am)

  • Powerhouse Fitness - used to be down Glassford Street, just along from Slaters. My wife got a good spin bike from them - they have a range of products up to proper gym level stuff. Their website says the Glasgow shop is permanently closed but are reopening in a new location soon. They are still taking orders and delivering through the website though. My Dad’s partner got a load of exercise equipment online from companies that refurb ex-gym equipment. All good quality and came with a warranty. He had a brand in his gym he liked and managed to find the same for his house. There’s a few to choose from a quick Google. There’s also a few places will rent you them (including delivery and install). Again, just Google, but might be worth trying before you buy? by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 2nd Jul 2020 7:47am)

  • I’m not starting an argument, but really interested to know what folks think might be the long term effect? How much of our economy relies on commuter spending and office rent - think about what you and your colleagues used to spend in an average week, from bus/train fare to coffee/lunch/rolls and popping up the street on your lunch break. The industry that your office supports, the cleaners, maintenance and reception folk, the bars and restaurants - that revenue would all be gone. Think about your first day of your last job - how would induction happen, getting to know how things work, how you do your job with those wee shortcuts your colleagues told you about. The mental health implications - it’s not for everyone, and it can make a lot of people feel like shit. The last few months have been an unprecedented event for everyone. We haven’t even begun to see what the fallout might be and we’ve been stuck in a kind of limbo, waiting to see what stage is next. There’s a huge benefit, both financial and emotionally for a lot of people, and I cannot argue that the reduced emissions are not a good thing, but I can’t think of an alternative that could support the economy in the long term. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 15th Jul 2020 12:36am)
  • I think this is the most realistic and hopefully most likely option. It won’t work for everyone or every company/industry, but even the option of WFH might be something that companies consider now when they would not have previously. It’s the only way to reduce congestion in a city that was never designed to handle the traffic that it does, and the improved mental health and productivity would hopefully boost the economy in other areas. Something has to give eventually and this might be the start of a sea change. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 15th Jul 2020 11:49am)

  • The Necropolis is a pretty interesting place - names of the wealthy traders from Glasgow’s past that a lot of the streets were named after. Pretty topical at the moment considering how all the money was made. I think recreating the famous buildings idea is a good one, and the Necropolis has some great views of the city, so even if you don’t want to investigate the people buried there, it will give you good views of the buildings. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 19th Sep 2020 11:55am)

  • I went to Roots and Fruits a while back, specifically to try and cut down on packaging waste and ended up with about as much as I would out of the supermarket. Needed and aubergine and they were all individually wrapped in sealed plastic bags. It’s good for loose stuff. • This is what I had thought - we wasted more as it went off more quickly but I guess it’s better to throw out half a bunch of parsley than a plastic bag it came in. • It was the bit coming down the M8 eastbound, under Charing Cross after the tunnel, where it splits and you can go left to St George’s Road/bottom of Maryhill Road, or keep right and come on to the bottom of Great Western Road. We drove past once the fire was out - looked like a BMW 3 or 4 series and the front end was completely collapsed in. They must have been going very fast up the slip. • It won’t cost as much as folk are saying. We had one installed with a liner for about £3000, but we’re on the ground floor so the liner was 28 metres to the chimney. It’s not cheap and it’s not clean. If you don’t have a free supply of dry wood, you need to buy it. I pay £7-9 a bag of good, dried, hard wood. I’ve got through 20 bags since the start of December, and we still have the heating on. I have a log store at my back door; if you’re top floor you’ll have to carry it all up the stairs. It looks nice, and for us, it heats the one room that never got warm. Pain in the arse though Edit - ours is smokeless, multi-fuel, so allowed currently. Also £60 a year to sweep it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 16th Jan 2021 2:01am)

  • Nobody has this insurance, unless they are a motor trader. Don’t let anyone test drive your car that claims “I’ve got a policy that covers me on anything” - if they damage the car during a test drive, there’s a really high chance it won’t cover you. It will be third party only, if you’re lucky. Imagine someone takes it for a test drive and crashed the car. Do you really think they’ll put a claim through their own insurance to fix it? Found a wee link with a bit of info that might help: https://www.gocompare.com/motoring/guides/buying-and-selling-cars-privately/ by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 6th Feb 2021 10:42am)
  • I’d bet it only gives you third party cover, like I said. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 6th Feb 2021 12:40pm)
  • This is bullshit, don’t listen to it. Read your policy wording, including ‘How to notify us of a claim’. It’s worth making your insurer aware as soon as possible, but the 24 hour thing is bollocks. If you’re factored, it’ll be dealt with by the block insurance. You’ll be liable for the excess, but the morally right thing to do would be for the landlord or the tenant to pay it depending on what caused the leak. If you don’t have a factor, you will need to claim on your insurance. Again, you will be liable for the excess unless you can prove they were negligent. This would be tricky to do - you would need to have the same thing happen repeatedly and prove that they knew about it, ignored it and have done nothing to sort it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 9th Feb 2021 9:02am)
  • You’d need to check the wording. Most will just say you have to report it as soon as is reasonably possible - for any type of insurance. No insurer would ever get away with rejecting a claim because you didn’t report it within 24 hours, especially a product sold to the general public. With motor insurance, insurers like to be told as soon as possible, because by the time you get home after nudging someone at 5 mph in a supermarket car park, they have already got their doctors report about how you caused them whiplash, along with their niece, best pal, work colleague and dog who were all in the car at the time, and are now having flash backs. It’s good to report anything ASAP - if it doesn’t come to a claim, close it with them and they shouldn’t increase your premium. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 9th Feb 2021 5:08pm)

  • Contact your local councillor https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/addressSearch.asp and MP https://members.parliament.uk/members/commons It’s the council’s responsibility, but there’s no reason an MP shouldn’t be involved - we employ them. • I heard from someone that is involved with the council cleansing department that the food bins were being removed from tenements because they kept getting contaminated with non-food waste rubbish. This caused problems when it got back to the depot. If it was a house, they can send a warning and then refuse your collection, but in a tenement, they don’t know who was responsible so decided to scrap it altogether. This was before Covid and also might be bullshit. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 21st Feb 2021 10:18pm)
  • Having worked in the hospitality industry for a large period of my life, I knew there were a lot of good guys and a lot of wanks. • If I was treated like shite and exploited by my employer, I’d struggle to bring my A game every day. According to the MPs statement to parliament, the owners have told HMRC all staff are still being paid, when they are not. This means they are ineligible for furlough and/or UC. Hospitality in this country is one of the worst industries for skirting workers rights and getting away with the bare minimum legally (or ignoring it altogether like in this case). by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 24th Feb 2021 9:47am)

  • I’d really doubt the bin men would bother doing this. Far more likely to be one of your neighbours. Lidl or Aldi (can’t remember which) had racks that let you hang a bike on a wall, or you could buy a pulley to hang it off the ceiling, in case you’d rather keep it in the house. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 7th Mar 2021 2:34pm)
  • But be prepared for every other solicitor to do exactly the same and charge you 3-4 times as much. I used Conveyancing Direct for my last 3 moves - last one cost £320. They are useless cunts, but so are all the conveyancers - my Mum paid Pacitti Jones over £1000 to do hers and they were no better. It’s a total rip off for what is ultimately cutting and pasting my details on to the last contract they did. Expect to hear nothing until the day before you move. I was less stressed having my child. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 10th Mar 2021 11:42pm)
  • If you’re ground floor, it might be more difficult. My neighbour did it and they had to dig a lot of crap out from underneath the floorboards to allow the right angle for the waste pipes. Changing rooms around in tenements is expensive and you need to make sure the contractor doing it knows what they are doing. I’d love to recommend someone, but the person that did my neighbour’s flat did a shite job. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 14th Mar 2021 11:31pm)

  • School places for August start have already been allocated - the applications go in the November before. It would be a good idea to try to contact a few schools around the areas you think you might like to live to see if they have places, as some might be full at this stage. There were also a lot of parents deferred their children from starting last August due to the pandemic, so this August might be busier than normal. There are a lot of primary schools in Glasgow though, so you will get something. The Uni will have a department that helps students and staff that are relocating with families, so reach out to them for help - they will be able to help with finding housing too. If you do contact schools over the next few weeks, don’t worry if you don’t get a reply straight away - the schools stop this Thursday for a 2 week Easter holiday and are not back until 19th April. Glasgow is generally a friendly and multi cultural city - my son is the same age as your child and his school has 28 languages spoken in it. I hope you and your family enjoy the move! by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 8:25am)

  • This is great work, and seriously good on you for doing this - you shouldn’t have to but I’m glad you did. I’m getting sick of reading about the litter problem though. If it’s not Reddit, it’s FB or NextDoor. And if it’s not litter picks, it’s folk moaning about the state of Kelvingrove Park and not being allowed to drink in it this summer. I’d say it’s pretty reasonable to assume everyone that has replied to this post, and others, doesn’t throw their crisp packet in a bush when they have finished. Folk that drop litter probably don’t read this and think “I’m a selfish prick and am going to change my ways”. If you can take the time to post a response to any of these posts, please also email your local MP and councillor, and consider who you vote for and what they stand for. If you don’t know who they are and what they stand for, Google it. Whilst work by public spirited locals is always to be commended, it doesn’t solve the problem. I don’t want my council tax to be spent on clearing other peoples shite up, or cleaning up a park after every sunny weekend. I don’t want to have to wait for police in an emergency because they’re standing at the gates of a park stopping cunts that don’t know how to behave. The council are trying to cut costs and have been hit by Covid absences, both which are hitting the cleansing department. Don’t moan on Reddit without also telling your councillor and MP about it too, or nothing will change. An election is coming up. They know their job depends on getting the most votes, and we should let them know at every opportunity what they need to do to get those votes. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 4th Apr 2021 11:02am)

  • The glossy panelling is wet wall. It has a gap between it and the wall and harbours mould. If you are having full tile, I’d avoid trying to tile the floor and have a full wet room. Tenement floors are old and creaky and you will get leaks. Use a full shower tray. Some of the prices quoted here are unbelievably cheap. Get someone who knows what they are doing and ask what they will do to ensure the shower won’t leak. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 5th Apr 2021 2:40pm)
  • Don’t know KPM, but in case you don’t know Glasgow too well, the Beresford might seem quiet just now, but remember, when pubs and clubs come back to normal, you will be living on one of the busiest streets for night life in Glasgow. • I’m looking at new windows at the moment. Spoke to the Window Advice Centre - they follow the rules, which say if you’re replacing a window, even a modern UPVC one, it needs to be replaced with a sash. There are UPVC sashes that comply. They’re about £1k a window, compared to £2k for timber. You will be able to find a window company that don’t care and will change it for similar modern unit easily. If the council found out they would make you change it but it’s unlikely they would find out. It might even be possible to repair the existing unit. If it’s just the glass, it can be changed really easily for about £300. Window Advice Centre were quite good to talk to - if you give them the postcode they can tell you the exact rules in the area. They source quotes for your work from various installers and then check the job has been done properly before you pay. Not used them yet but have asked around and only heard good reviews. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 18th Jun 2021 7:44am)

  • I’m not sure if the kids pools are open in any of the Glasgow Club pools. I haven’t been in them all since they reopened, but was at Whitehill in Dennistoun this week, and the kiddies pool is drained and closed off. The shallow end of the main pool is 0.8m, so might be a bit deep for your youngest to put their feet on the bottom. As someone else has said, I think you need a 1-1 adult to non-swimming child. The booking is a pain in the arse too - books up very quickly. They only release slots 7 days in advance. The pool was split in to 3 lanes for swimmers and the other half was for family swim. My son and I had it to ourselves, as they only allow 1 family per session. Seems like overkill as the pool is huge. Most of the pools only have 2 days with family swim sessions per week, so there’s not much availability. If you can be bothered, Mariner Centre in Falkirk has a beach entry pool and is very warm, but you have to call ahead the day before to book and it’s only half hour slots, so a fair hike for a short swim. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 11th Jul 2021 9:45am)
  • The Copy and Print shop on Great Western Road, next to Achilles Heel, has a sign outside saying they can print sewing patterns up to A0 sized paper for you. They might be able to print you a paper copy of your online patterns. • Should have said, the spaces open up 7 days in advance, at 9pm the evening before. So if you want to book for Tuesday 20th July, the slots are released at 9pm on Monday 12th July. Each pool has family sessions on different days. It’s easiest to see them all at once on the app (website isn’t great). You need to register to be able to book, which is free. Family swim was £5, and allows up to 5 people (not sure but I assume you are meant to be the same bubble) so if you can find someone to go with you, it’s a good option. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 12th Jul 2021 2:00pm)
  • Practical Car and Van rental were really good about a month ago, when I helped my Dad move. In Anniesland, just past the Morrison’s, on Temple Road. I had tried Boulevard first, but they had no availability - apparently had been that way for ages, but still worth trying as they are cheap. If you aren’t used to driving a van, think about paying a bit more for the excess waiver. If you do damage it, you just hand the keys back and walk away. Standard excess is usually about £1000 and they will just take the full amount and give you the change once the damage is fixed. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 13th Jul 2021 8:15am)
  • Sorry if I sound like an arsehole - I’m genuinely trying to give advice. A home report is a visual inspection. I have moved a few times over the last 15 years - houses and flats. Every time, the person doing the home report did a walk around and stuck their head through the loft hatch, that’s it. All they are doing is putting a value on the property that dictates what a bank will lend you as a mortgage. They will identify obvious major issues, but it is NOT a structural survey, and they don’t go on the roof or under the floors. I’ve had estate agents tell me to use their guy for a home report to ensure buyers can get a mortgage that matches their valuation. Won’t name names, but it rhymes with Cunter Hogg and Cuntyson. Read the report - 80% of it is a template. There is a lot of disclaimers, things like “electric meter appears to be in working order but a full electrical inspection should be sought to ensure blah, blah, blah” or “roof is not visible from street level”. If you want to look in the roof, I’d absolutely ask, but do you know what you are looking for? Your solicitor just wants an easy transaction. Is there a factor or is the building self factored? Either way, it sounds like the problem has been identified already, so ask for info about what the problem was and how it’s going to be sorted - there will be quotes from whoever is going to fix it. It might be typical maintenance that all tenements and older properties need regularly. There is a way to ask legitimate questions about what will be the biggest purchase of your life, and it is your right as a buyer to do so. The seller doesn’t want the hassle of an offer falling through. Please feel confident to ask whatever you want, and don’t let a lazy solicitor or estate agent tell you otherwise - they’re just looking for a pay day. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 15th Jul 2021 11:00pm)

  • I agree with this Brutti Compadres is a great place. It’s in Merchant City which is only 5 mins walk from the station. You could walk another 10 mins to the Necropolis which has views right across the city. It’s right next to the Cathedral and not far from Glasgow Green or Drygate Brewery - if it’s a nice day this would be a good few hours well spent. I think both stations (Central and Queen street - both close to each other) have luggage storage, if you don’t fancy lugging your bags about. If you head west, Finnieston has some great restaurants - can’t really go wrong with any of them but Rioja, The Finnieston and Kelvingrove Cafe are all great. Kelvingrove Park is right there, or if the weather is bad, Kelvingrove museum and the Transport museum are free to get in, but I think you might need to book a slot at the moment. The transport museum is a bit further out but walkable. You can get the underground from Buchanan Street or St Enochs to Kelvinbridge and walk through the park to get to Finnieston. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 7th Aug 2021 2:23pm)
  • The system is fucked. The Glasgow Club app is the best way to see what sessions are available. Slots open for bookings a week in advance, at 9pm the evening before - so if you wanted to book for Monday 16th August, the bookings open at 9pm on Sunday 8th August. I’ve been trying to take my son swimming over the holidays, and can only take him to a family swim session as this is the only option for kids. Each pool has 4 family sessions a week, which book up immediately. One session can be for up to 5 people. There are 12 Glasgow Club pools. This means for kids and families, across the whole of Glasgow during school holidays, a maximum of 240 people per week can go swimming. I’ve had half a pool to my son and myself on the two occasions I did get something booked. I know we’re not through the pandemic but it seems excessive. Lane swimming doesn’t seem to book up as quickly, and the staff at Whitehill pool told me there’s loads of no shows for lane swims, so if a slot suits you but you can’t get booked, show up and there’s a good chance you’ll still get in. Don’t do this for family sessions though. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 7th Aug 2021 2:36pm)

I think the last few years have made folk even more defensive of their 2 metre personal space. I try to take a deep breath and forget it, but sometimes a good burst of every swear word I know does the trick. I’ve come up with some pretty good combos. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 15th Aug 2021 3:19pm)
  • This is not true. Hacking and Paterson are total cunts, but they absolutely do not own an insurance company. They place thier insurance through an insurance broker who places it with an insurance company. The insurance broker receives commission from the insurance company for placing the business with them (this is industry standard and the majority of commercial business is placed this way). I know that the insurance broker used to kick back a portion of this commission to H&P. Between 20-40p of every pound you pay in insurance will be commission. Not all factors do this. Hacking and Paterson are the worst of all factors. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 2:25pm)

  • Yep, through the day, Stravaigin are fine with you drinking in the restaurant side (left hand side as you walk on the door) with a wee one. I’ve changed my son on the floor of the gents a fair few times. Most places will let you use the ladies if that’s the only baby change - I’ve had a staff member check for me and keep an eye out. West end is funny for places to drink with kids. I get that a lot of bars don’t want any kids in, because if they did it would turn in to a playground and alienate their regulars that actually spend money. Upstairs in Grosvenor used to be a fucking riot on a weekend. Kids running everywhere and most adults in there used to bring their own food for the kids too. • I completely understand why most folk’s preference would be to work from home, but is it still a bit of a novelty? I wonder if in 3-5 years there could be a lot of people wanting to get back to an office. If you’re not lucky enough to have a spare room you can completely turn over to a workspace, it can be quite intrusive on your home life. I used to work from home and hated having anything that reminded me of my job in the house. Employers will legally have to ensure you have a suitable workspace, which will involve all the monotonous desk assessments and making sure your chair is the right height. We’re still adapting to the situation, but in wonder if there will be a long term shift back the way as folk miss the sociability and face to face interaction. And I write this as someone who fucking loathed my office job and everything and everyone connected to it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 21st Nov 2021 11:44am)
  • If your factor arranges your buildings insurance, it will cover everything in your flat that is fixed to the fabric of the building, and your communal areas. Imagine you could pick up your whole block and shake it - everything that fell out would be covered by contents insurance, everything that stayed put is buildings insurance (includes bathrooms, kitchens etc, but not TVs fitted to the wall) Ask your factor why they don’t think your ceiling is covered. If it is because it is old and falling apart, this is wear and tear and is not covered by any insurance. If it is because of a leak, or your neighbours jumping up and down, you should be covered. Ask for a copy of the policy and if you think you have a valid claim, ask for the claim process. You should not have an additional buildings policy as well as a factor policy. If you do need to make a claim, both insurers may attempt to decline your cover as you are dual insured. If the policy your factor has arranged is not fit for purpose, complain and ask them to arrange suitable cover. As much as they are almost all bastards, I prefer factor insurance as they cover the whole block. If you sort out your own cover, when your neighbour has a leak that comes through to your place, you have to claim on your own policy. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 23rd Nov 2021 4:12pm)

  • I got my money back through a chargeback request via my bank. They have still not had any communication from Playground of Sound regarding the dispute. I have had nothing from them either. I’d hate someone to buy tickets as a gift, to be disappointed later. At the same time, I don’t want to stop hospitality and entertainment from recovering by deterring folk from buying tickets - just be wary of anything connected to Playground of Sound. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 8:03am)
  • Also, Flaming Lips are now playing Barrowland on the date they were meant to be at Junction 1 - tickets still available! by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 8:07am)
  • I got the same email but then heard nothing else. The phone number was disconnected, the Junction 1 website and Insta had been taken down completely (subsequently are now back up), and there was no response to emails. Bank refunded via a chargeback request immediately. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 15th Dec 2021 8:05am)
  • Do you mean are the tickets for the Junction 1 gig valid for the Barrowlands? If so, no they won’t be. The Barrowlands tickets are sold through SeeTickets. It’s the same date but a different venue and (thankfully) nothing to do with the organisers of Playground/Junction 1. If you search Junction 1 for other posts on this sub, someone had linked a statement to Flaming Lips FB message about the cancellation of the J1 gig. If you haven’t heard anything about your refund, I’d suggest raising a chargeback with your bank or credit card provider. I sent mine screen shots of the J1 FB post noting the gig was cancelled, as well as shots of the Insta and website which had been taken down and I got a refund within an hour (Monzo bank). • This is a very subjective question. If you just want the cheapest, go on Compare the Market and answer the questions honestly, then pick the lowest. Have you got a bike? Have you got a few bits of expensive jewellery? Do you lose stuff a lot? A bog standard policy will cover what is in your house, up to a maximum amount, and some things like bikes and jewellery will have single article limits - anything over a certain value needs to be specified. Some basic policies exclude accidental damage and loss away from your premises, so if you lose your watch when you’re out, it’s not covered. If you keep you bike locked up in the close, they might not cover it if it is nicked, as it’s not in your flat. Excesses vary massively, so read the small print. Also, you mentioned damp/rot and a roof repair - wear and tear, and damage down to lack of maintenance are not covered by insurance. If you don’t feel confident buying insurance yourself, go to a broker. They can check the whole of the market for you and give you advice and quotes based on your circumstances. If you buy direct, yourself, an insurance company can only advise you on their own products, and not on the best option for you. It is worth doing a quick walk round and adding up what it would cost to replace everything in each room (it doesn’t need to be exact, just roughly) I guarantee you’ll be surprised - then this is a good starting point for what limit you might want to consider. Also take photos of any items and any new purchases over, say £100. Easier to keep than receipts and helps if you have to claim (hope you don’t). If you imagine you picked up your house and tipped it upside down, anything that fell out is contents insurance. Anything that is fixed is covered by buildings. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 4th Jan 2022 5:42pm)

  • Totally agree, but even the repro ticket might get quite expensive, as you would need to print a fresh batch every night with the new day and date. Would it be a lot cheaper to offer a free, downloadable ticket you can print yourself? Not the A4 QR code, but a proper, wallet sized ticket like you used to get - proper artwork etc. You could print your own to keep/display, and get it professionally printed in Snappy Snaps if it was a special one. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 11th Jan 2022 7:47am)
  • Do you have a bank account now? If not, try a high street branch. Nationwide are still a building society, and have money advisors you can speak to face to face that can help with current accounts and savings accounts. If you have a branch locally, I’d recommend them. They are still ran as a building society, so they don’t seem to be as ‘corporate’ as banks - you still get to vote at their AGM every year (but you don’t have to). Their current account has some good features like rounding up each transaction to the nearest pound and putting it in your savings. So if you buy something for £2.75, it adds 25p to a pot, which can build up quite quickly (again, you don’t have to do this). Their app is really easy to use and displays all your accounts on one screen, so you can see what is in your current account and savings. I have always found them helpful, and if you explain your situation, I’m sure they would be able to help. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 18th Jan 2022 4:41pm)
  • Surely better than dumping it in the street or next to the glass bins as most pricks do. This is where the council want them dropped so they can be chipped and used in the park. The ones on the street get dumped in landfill where they rot and release methane. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 24th Jan 2022 7:41am)
  • Agree with this. Nationwide if you want a branch - they still have branches in Shawlands, Argyle Street, Byres Road and Anniesland. Monzo if you’re not bothered for a branch - I’ve been very happy with Monzo and the few times I have had problems like chargebacks and unknown transactions, they have sorted it straight away. I really like the Monzo app, as anything that happens on your account is shown immediately on your app. If you use your card in store or online, it updates straight away. Even pre-authorisations (like a hotel might do) ping up, which has been useful when I got some unknown transactions put through recently. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 24th Jan 2022 2:10pm)

  • I think they are just attaching names to the venue to sell tickets - worry about the little details later, like telling the acts or actually getting them to turn up. Flaming Lips have already cancelled their gig, but are playing the Barrowlands on the same date. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 8:00am)
  • I’ve posted about this before, but this is my experience. I had tickets for Playground 2020, which I bought mainly to see Flaming Lips. Covid hit, got moved to 2021, and the line up changed. Saw Flaming Lips were due to play opening weekend at Junction 1 and bought tickets. Money left my account and thought it was unusual that the debit was Junction 1 and not Ticketmaster, SeeTickets etc. Few months later, see a Junction 1 FB post announcing Flaming Lips have cancelled and refunds will be issued from the ticket seller. Hear nothing. I tried to contact Junction 1 by phone (line disconnected), Instagram (page closed) and email and FB (no reply to either). Went down the chargeback route and by bank (Monzo) had the money back to me within the day. To date I have heard nothing from Junction 1, other than the public FB post. About 2 weeks after the Junction 1 gig, Flaming Lips announced they are playing the Barras on the same date as they were due to play J1, so they are keeping the gig, juts not the venue. It is strange to me that Hot Chip pulled out our Playground, along with other acts, but were then announced as playing this gig. Hot Chip have nothing on their own website about this gig. I genuinely feel for the entertainment industry - act and all the associated people that are involved with putting on the show, and want live music venues in the city I live in. But I always remember the saying, “if it’s brown and smells like shite….” by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 9:34am)
  • Don’t think I can - I can’t prove the bands aren’t going to play. I contacted Hot Chip via their social media to let them know tickets were still being sold and did they know about the gig, but got no reply. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 10:43am)

  • You don’t usually pay council tax in Feb and March - the annual bill is split over 10 months. It might be that for your first ‘year’ you are needing to pay more to catch up. I can’t figure out the maths - I’m sure someone more intelligent than me can explain it better, but every time I have moved, my first payments have been higher until you catch up with the calendar of payments. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 24th Feb 2022 7:14am)
  • It’s worth calling ahead. I hired a van to clear a load of shite out of the cellar that was left by out previous resident. You need to prove you stay in Glasgow council area (council tax bill, utility bill etc.) You are allowed in with vans as long as it is residential waste, but they might want you to go via the weigh bridge which is round the back. It was always the case you had to book in a van though. Also, Dawsholm had a fire last year so they’re not taking bulk waste, rubble etc. at the moment. Last time I was there they were turning a guy away with a load of doors. Worth giving them a ring to avoid a wasted trip. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 25th Feb 2022 10:31am)

  • At the moment, gas and electric prices are high and will get higher. You might find a flat that has a fixed price fuel supplier on a good rate if you’re lucky, but I’m not sure if companies will let new tenants take over an existing tariff. There will likely be another significant increase in October. This would be the cost that would affect your budget the most - rent and council tax won’t change over the year, but your fuel will. A modern property will have lower bills as you don’t need to run the heating as long. There are a lot of older, poorly insulated flats in Glasgow and heating them can cost a fortune. Build in some contingency to your budget to reflect this. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 15th Mar 2022 10:40am)

  • Might be a bit obvious, but Edinburgh has lots for kids. - National Museum of Scotland is free and you could spend a day there. - Portobello beach - Edinburgh Botanic Gardens - Zoo is good for all ages but expensive - The walk round Arthur’s Seat is lovely - might be a bit much going to the top with the youngest, but you can go some of the way up on the far side and it’s not as steep. - There’s always lots on during the Festival - we did a Silent Disco walking tour with our son and he loved it. A lot of the shows aimed at kids are free (usually ask for a donation at the end). Remember kids get free bus passes now. Edinburgh is very easy to get around - you can buy an all day family pass that works on the buses and trams for about £7-10 I think. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 21st Mar 2022 5:27pm)

I have flown from Glasgow to London City twice in the last 4 months and both times there has only been one security check open (2 queues). Even then, it only took 10 mins to get through both times. There are quite a few flights due to depart between 6.30-7am but most are flights to London so probably business commuters. Last time I flew, everyone seems to have forgotten how flying works. I took my son when he was 4 to my Dad’s in Perthshire, it is remote, no neighbours and has a garden that was dark enough we felt like we were camping proper. There’s so much more you need to take for the wee one “just in case” if you’re in the middle of nowhere. • This is right. During the 2006/2008 property boom and crash, surveyors were valuing properties without even viewing them, just driving past and even using street view in some instances. They were told by estate agents what value to put in the home report, to match the offers that were being made. Banks were lending 100% and even 125% mortgages, and unaffordable multiples of annual income. The shit then hit the fan and the banks couldn’t go after folk that had defaulted, as they were bankrupt, so they were left with repossessed properties that weren’t worth what they had loaned. The banks then started then going after the surveyors, saying that they had been misled by over valuations and tried to recover their losses from them. A lot of surveyors could not justify how they arrived at the valuation. A home report is mainly disclaimers and denials of liability in case they miss something or get questioned on how they arrived at their liability. I have a huge sympathy for anyone trying to buy. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 29th Apr 2022 9:22pm)
  • Looks like Eurohostel is full. There is a Youth Hostel in Park, but it’s a bit of a hike from Glasgow Green - not much chance of getting a taxi at the end of the night. The Uni halls used to rent rooms out over the summer. Anything close to Strathclyde would be handy. I think the main campus only lets to groups, but a lot of the private halls will rent a room on a short term basis. Even a whole week might be cheaper than 3 nights in a hotel. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 6th May 2022 9:31am)
  • I was going to suggest the M77 too. You can head out through Shawlands and Giffnock, and join the M77 at the Newton Mearns roundabout which will be quieter than heading over the Kingston Bridge. As your confidence grows, join it earlier, at junctions closer to town. The road down to Cumbria is a breeze, once you’re off the M8 or M74. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 8th May 2022 9:37pm)
  • There’s lavender plastic things that hang in your wardrobe - search for moth hangers on Amazon. Rentokil also sell something called Insectrol. It’s a spray that you spray in to your room for 10-15 seconds, then leave it for an hour, then open the window and let it air out. One treatment sorted it, but it’s nasty stuff so be really careful if you have pets or kids. This worked for me, but they came back after about 2 years - did it again and sorted it again. If you have wool carpets, look for wee bare patches. Also check your clothes for wee white egg cases (they look like wee dried snotters). • This was almost 15 years ago, but we looked at the Winter Gardens for our ceremony and/or reception. The council would not let you use them until they had closed for the day to the public, so the earliest we could have started everything was 6pm, which was too late for us. Normal closing time for Kibble Palace is 6.30pm in the summer, and a bit earlier in the winter. Post Covid, the opening times are still a bit shorter than normal - closing time is currently 5pm at the Kibble Glasshouse. For venue hire, music has to be off by 10.30 and everyone out by 11pm, so worth thinking if this is enough time for everything you have planned before you do anything more. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 24th May 2022 7:49am)

  • With everything Junction 1, I would go with the mantra, “if it’s brown and smells of shite…” With the TLC gig now being ‘postponed’, that is 3 out of the first 3 gigs that haven’t happened. • Flaming Lips cancelled. The band issued a statement apologising and distancing themselves from the venue. They still played Barrowland, but nothing to do with J1 - tickets for J1 weren’t honoured as they had nothing to do with the Barras gig. • Hot Chip - postponed until August • TLC - moved to O2, but original J1 tickets were “allegedly” valid for the new venue. Now the gig has been ‘postponed’. TLC’s official website shows their last UK date as July 3rd before a run of Canada and USA dates until Sep 22nd, so I can’t see them coming back to do a one off Glasgow date before then. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 3:51pm)
  • I had to do a charge back through my bank (Monzo). I gave it 14 days from the date it was cancelled. By this point, J1 had shit down their Instagram, FB and website, weren’t answering the phone and had not responded to emails. I paid with a debit card, but managed to get it refunded by raising it as a disputed transaction. According to my bank, they haven’t even responded to the dispute. If you paid via credit card it should be easier. The weird thing was the transaction was just to ‘Flaming Lips’ not Ticketmaster or Skiddle. The e receipt I got was to Junction 1 directly. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 7:28pm)
  • Just checked again - the reference against refund I received from my bank says THEFLAMINGLIPS/96 David St/Glasgow/G40 2UH This address is also where Playground of Sound Ltd and BoozeForYou Ltd are also registered. Brian Traynor, who is behind Junction 1 is a director of both companies. So the money I paid for a Flaming Lips gig that did not go ahead was sitting in his account until I asked for it back via my bank. I’m not sure if this is unusual in the gig/promoter world, but it seems unusual to me. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 7:38pm)

  • Curlers Rest on Byres Road has a few areas upstairs. Dram on Woodlands Road (used to be Uisge Beatha) I think has a few snugs. The Drake in Woodlands opposite the petrol station has areas you can book. I think Chinaskis also has some areas. Webster’s at Kelvinbridge has a snug at the back that would be a perfect size. For 15 folk, if it’s starting mid-day/early afternoon, I think most pubs would happily reserve you a few tables if they knew you were going to spend a few hours there, so if you have a favourite place, would be worth giving them a ring. • I think it’s always this weekend in Glasgow. Next weekend is the big one in Northern Ireland and they all go over for that. A few years back TRNSMT was split over 2 weekends because of the walks. I also think I remember being at the International Jazz Festival in George Square one year, which had to stop half way through because a walk went by. • It wasn’t helped by the fact that they were originally meant to play King Tuts stage, but got moved to the main stage when Years and Years couldn’t play. Their app which showed the lineups and times didn’t update for me (I downloaded it at 12pm that day), and I went to King Tuts stage to see them start, at the time they were finishing on the main stage. Don’t think you have any chance of a refund - they’d be giving half the festival their money back. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 11th Jul 2022 7:59pm)
  • I wasn’t posting this as another punch bag for Junction 1. I’d genuinely like to see a venue like this in Glasgow, and I know performers and all the folk employed around the industry have had a shit few years. I had tickets to an earlier gig that didn’t go ahead, and have only seen cancellation after cancellation, so was waiting to see if or when anything would actually happen. I saw the Instagram video and everyone looked like they were having a good one. • Cotton Print Factory in Kinning Park sell fabric, lining and wadding - huge choice. They can give you names of folk that will make them for you too. We got a set made with thermal lining for £400 - this was 21m of fabric, heading tape and liner. The seamstress charged £25 per drop (7 drops) to make them up, so about half was the sewing and half was the fabric etc. If you go in with your window measurements, they will let you know how much fabric you need. Red Wing have a shop in London that will do them, but it’s £100, plus you have to get them there (either posting or drop off). I think the return postage is included, so I’m sure either of the above local guys will be able to do something more competitive. Just be aware, I had some Loake boots resoled at Phoenix. Did a great job, but Loake won’t touch them now. I had planned to send them to Loake for a full refurb and resole when they needed done again, but if they’ve been repaired by anyone else, they won’t do anything further to them. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 8th Aug 2022 9:26pm)
  • I’ve been to London, Edinburgh and Manchester this summer, and all feel significantly cleaner than Glasgow. There is still litter in these cities, and I couldn’t put my finger on why exactly they seemed cleaner until last week - it’s the weeds. There are weeds, grass and piles of shite growing out of every kerb and pavement across the whole city. Didn’t see any of this in the other cities. I’m sure the flowers are good for the bees, but it really adds to the general dirtiness. Leaves aren’t cleaned up anywhere anymore, so the kerbs and roads have become flower beds. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 11th Aug 2022 1:19pm)
  • They have been using cinemas for jurys since the pandemic, and are still using them I think. I know 2 folk that were summoned in the last 6 months (one of them only a few weeks ago) and both would have been at Odeon Springfield Quay if they were selected, so I don’t think the judge will be able to see your footwear if you’re picked. • Glasgow Uni’s own SRC have said that the problem is the number of students that university is accepting. There might be less flats available, but all 3 Glasgow Unis are taking on more students every year, especially international students that pay a premium - they don’t care if you have a place to stay, they just want your money. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 14th Aug 2022 8:33am)
  • I think Glasgow usually do prioritise those students, but can’t satisfy the demanded this year. Deferrals due to Covid are all coming back on top of increased numbers. There is so much private student accommodation in Glasgow now, and the Unis don’t have ‘first dibs’ on them - it’s a free for all. Glasgow Uni has always been oversubscribed though. They take on first year students for particular courses, knowing they only have enough places for a certain number to complete their masters. Those students that don’t make the grade after first year are told they can’t progress and to pick another subject - Psychology is one example. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 14th Aug 2022 9:18am)

  • Don’t go anywhere apart from The Framing Workshop - bottom of Maryhill Road at St George’s Cross. Really reasonable and do a great job - cheaper than Wilton Glazing which was mentioned here and better choice. Not much more than an IKEA equivalent, but it will last much longer. Anything bigger than A3 in an IKEA frame wobbles about - the IKEA frames aren’t sturdy enough. They’re all very nice people too. I promise I am not affiliated with them in any way. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 19th Aug 2022 11:40am)
  • If you’re not getting anything from comparison sites, I’d try going through an insurance broker. Not all local brokers will do personal lines insurance - Laurie Ross is a local broker that does. I’m not recommending them, they’re just the only one I could think of off the top of my head. They will go to the whole of the market and get quotes for you - they will have experience of obtaining cover for ‘non-standard’ properties, for example, those in flood zones, non-standard construction etc. Comparison sites typically don’t offer quotes for these types of property because they need a human underwriter to understand and accept the quirks of the property. I can’t think why the number of flats would be a reason not to offer you cover, there’s plenty other blocks with as many flats - more likely it’s flagging up as a high crime postcode. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 8:43am)

  • Cotton Print Factory in Kinning Park. We got 21m of fabric, plus blackout thermal lining and the tape for the top for a tenement bay. Drop was about 2.8m. Whole lot was £500 I think, including making them up. They used to have seamstresses in the place, and you could leave the fabric with them, but since Covid, they all work remotely. They will give you 6-10 numbers to call - all have varying waiting lists. We waited about 3 weeks. They’re in the industrial estate just past David Lloyd, round the corner from Screwfix, Can’t say if the axle would be a problem for them, but I’ve always found them honest and reliable. Wonder if the problem is that once the axle is off, the van needs to stay on the lift until it’s fixed. I know there’s still problems getting parts. If they take the axle off and need to order something, they either need to put it all back together to park it up, or leave it on the lift until the part comes in. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 27th Sep 2022 6:01pm)

  • Honestly, if you’re looking to stick to a budget, forget the video. It costs a fortune and I don’t know anyone that has watched theirs more than once. Ask your pals that have had one done if they think it was worth the money. It’s one of those things that everyone thinks they need. Save the money and get a good photographer - by good I mean the style you like, but also someone you get on with. I’ve been to more than one wedding where the photographer was a total prick and spent the day shouting at folk (bride and groom included) and having stamping tantrums when people didn’t do what he wanted. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 11th Oct 2022 3:59pm)
  • I read something a while back, relating to the London stores, that there is an element of VAT evasion that makes it worthwhile. From memory, you don’t pay VAT until your first 12 months of trading. If you close the business before 12 months, you can keep all the VAT you received without passing it on to the tax man. Reopen the next day as a new coming and repeat. It’s attractive to landlords that can’t otherwise fill a space, to have someone in it, even if you receive no rent, otherwise you pay unoccupied rates to the council. You can still advertise the shop to let, and if a better paying tenant comes along, kick the candy shop out and move them in to you next empty unit. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 18th Oct 2022 2:01pm)

  • I heard something a few months ago about a proposal that would use the existing subway to connect to the airport via one of the service yards that brings the trains above ground for repairs (maybe Govan?). It’s the easiest route to the airport and then connects it to both train stations via Queen St and St Enoch stops. Either that or a Monorail going along the M8. If it was going to cost a fortune, I think the money be better spent on making it easier to get about the city. It’s ideal for trams and buses if you get rid of the cars. I’m not about to start gluing myself to anything, but there are far too many cars in the centre of a city as small as Glasgow. Not a problem, but she asked if the staff got it, and the guy was uncomfortable and eventually admitted they didn’t, but he wasn’t really supposed to say that. • It’s only pre-sale today - they will release at least 2 more waves of tickets before the event. I think they were doing deals last year about a month before. If you’re not sure, I wouldn’t buy them now, thinking you’ll get your full price if you want to sell them later. It does depend on the line up - Friday looks like an ‘older crowd’ so probably be the least popular of all 3 days, plus it’s a working day. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 4th Nov 2022 10:15am)

  • Have you got Sky Q as well? I’m not tech minded at all, so sorry for the poor description, but we had an issue with ours. We’re on EE broadband with Sky Q. Apparently broadband has 2 channels - 2.hz and 5hz the Sky box uses the 2.4hz, but some of your other Wi-Fi devices might switch from the 5hz to the 2.4hz channel automatically to get a better signal. Sky Q doesn’t like this so kicks them off to keep its signal. It was actually EE that sorted this for us (Sky are useless) and we now have 2 Wi-Fi channels with the same name - one is 2.4hz and the other is 5hz. It stops devices from switching between the two and we haven’t had a problem since. Apparently this is something you can do yourself, but I would t know where to start. Sorry again if this isn’t technically correct. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 14th Nov 2022 7:20am)

You’ll also finish earlier - a lot of bars will be open until 1-3am on weekends - most restaurants will have last tables by 10pm, should be out before midnight most nights and you might even get a staff meal if you’re lucky. I’ve never worked for them, but I know people that have, and anything owned by G1 Group (most of Ashton Lane, Corinthian etc. - Google them) are horrible. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 8:14am)
  • IKEA kitchens are shite. I’ve got one and I hate it. If you get one and don’t use their fitter, you will not get the same warranty. They are poor quality and a lot of pieces are cut to fit, to it leaves a lot of raw exposed MDF edges, which don’t react very well to moisture. All the problems we have had have been sorted eventually, after literally years of arguing with them and me being a stubborn bastard. Their customer service is absolute bollocks. Howdens are good, but the difference between an average and great kitchen is a good fitter. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 8:55pm)

  • I’m not trying to make any big point or start any arguments at all, but there are various different answers here - I think it’s pretty obvious that folk live to a budget they can afford. What seems like living frugally for a week to one person, might be what another lives on for a whole month. A wee Deliveroo as a treat might be what someone else is left with, after they have paid the rest of their bills each month. That person might be the Mum or Dad you see at the school gates every day, or the neighbour you see in the close once a week. Only thing I wanted to say - Christmas can be a tough time, so if you can support your food bank, or any other local charity, do it. Donations are always up in December, but don’t forget, problems don’t go away in January, but donations definitely drop off. If you’re struggling, you can ask for help - schools, Citizens Advice, this sub, doctors, local councillors and MPs can all direct you to things you might not realise are available. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 11th Dec 2022 8:12pm)
  • You could get a soil sieve - they’re about a tenner from Screwfix or Toolstation. If you’ve got a wheelbarrow and a shovel, you could shovel a pile in to the sieve, and might be easier to get an even spreading that chucking a pile off a shovel. Make sure to get one with big enough holes. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 13th Dec 2022 10:46am)

They’re possibly being taken over at the moment, which would be a big shame - it was the best looked after close I’ve ever lived in. https://gwsf.org.uk/impending-loss-of-iconic-community-owned-housing-association-unnecessary-and-deeply-regrettable-says-gwsf/ by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 13th Dec 2022 7:55pm)

  • The EU were trying to ban them a while ago (2018). Don’t know if this went ahead, but a lot of manufacturers discontinued them in advance of the ban coming in. It’s something to do with the chemical used being banned. You can still find some for sale on EBay - look for strike anywhere matches. The only reason I know this is that I was looking for some last year. Bought this fancy match holder for lighting candles, that you can strike the matches on - except safety matches don’t work on it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 8:43am)
  • If you can’t get them, my solution was to cut the striker side off the box of safety matches and tape it to the bottom of the holder. Means I can still use the nice long matches with fancy coloured tips, and I don’t need to go looking for the box. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 4:13pm)
  • The Cave have a great selection of miniatures and wee gift boxes, so I’m sure you’d get it in there, but just in case they don’t have it, Valhallas Goat, a wee bit further up, between Roots and Fruits and the chippy might have them too. • I had been told the same as others here - if it wasn’t already reported, the council won’t accept liability. If they knew about it and hadn’t fixed it in a reasonable period, then you have a chance. It’s incredibly frustrating, and I’m sorry this has happened to you, especially at this time of the year. If everyone reports potholes whenever they see them, it will help others make a claim. The more that are reported, the better. Either they get fixed, or the council get held responsible for the damage they cause. The My Glasgow app has a section for reporting potholes, and it’s very easy. I realise, with the number of potholes there are, you could spend a day doing nothing but reporting them, but if everyone on this sub did one a day, it would make a huge difference. https://preview.redd.it/ouwpp4wm7fba1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=a1eac67362ffde3b629a5236183f610027648e42 by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 11th Jan 2023 9:01am)
  • If it’s a new build, you won’t get one. The link on the council website to the table of eligible properties doesn’t work (surprise), but as the guidance notes say: “Not all properties within permit zones are eligible for parking permits. Planning consent for new developments require the developer to provide sufficient off-street parking to support the development. Where a development proceeds without supportive parking, the properties may be considered car free and parking permits denied.” If it’s an older flat (total guess, but pre-90s at least), you might be eligible, but be prepared to deal with the most frustrating department of GCC. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 17th Jan 2023 8:49am)
  • Lots wrong. It is not “super uncommon” to tip here. Maybe in a pub, or somewhere where you order food at the bar, but in a restaurant, where you have ordered and been served a the table, 10% is the norm, unless the service or food is shit. The right thing to do is to ask for the 10% to be removed and then leave the equivalent in cash - it’s the best chance of the server getting it, and not going in the owners pocket. You got a discount off the bill with a voucher. I’d have still tipped the same % based on what the bill would have been before the discount. Everyone should have to work on hospitality or retail once in their life, to appreciate why tips are important. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 11:28am)
  • Totally agree. I shouldn’t have lumped retail and hospitality in to the same boat when discussing tips. In my experience, people that have never had to deal with the public for work, tend to be the ones that don’t tip. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 11:52am)
  • The west end has always been it’s own micro market. A 2 bed flat would be at least £200k home report. Properties tend to go 10% over home report as a minimum, regardless of the state of the economy and housing market. Demand far outstrips supply. Sorry you didn’t get this one. It’s a fucked system, but home reports don’t really mean anything other than how much the bank will loan. For west end, add 10-15% as a minimum, depending on location and condition, but often it will be more. This has been the case for the last 20 years. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 10:24am)

  • Calderglen Zoo is great. Only a small part of it is inside, but they have small monkeys, reptiles and lots of other small animals and birds. There is a good play park, cafe and picnic area. The whole place is pretty compact, and it’s only £1.85 for adults and 95p for kids. Free parking too. The new Burrell Collection and The Hunterian Museum are also good - they have a good mix of exhibits. There are more animals and fossils at the Hunterian. Burrell is very family friendly; Hunterian maybe a bit less so, but it’s usually pretty quiet and the cloisters and rest of the uni grounds are nice to play in after. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 6:43am)
  • If you are running your heating all that time, it will cost that much. It sounds like you are struggling to heat your house. Setting your thermostat to 22 degrees, for example, in an old tenement is just running your boiler constantly - it will never get to 22 degrees, which is the temperature that cuts out the thermostat. Try turning it down a few degrees. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but if the warmest your house can get to is 20 degrees, let it get there, cut out for half and hour, then kick back in when it drops below. That way your boiler only works half the time it would if the thermostat was at to 22, and running constantly to try and get to a level it can never reach. Also, some boilers have a dial on the front with a radiator and water temperature. They often don’t have numbers on these dials, just a picture or a radiator and a tap, so it takes and bit of trial and error to adjust them. You can turn these down and still get hot water and radiators. It just reduces the temperature at which your boiler sends water round the system. If the radiator dial is all the way up, this sets a high temperature for the boiler to reach before it sends the water round your system. Turn it down, and you will still get hot radiators, but your boiler isn’t working as hard and for as low = less energy used. I am not an expert at all, and the way I understood it when it was explained to me was: - boiler is set to 70 degrees. - it heats water to 70, then sends it round your radiators - radiators give 20 degrees of heat to the room, so water cools to 50 - it goes back in to boiler to be heated back to 70 and repeats until the room gets to the same temperature as your thermostat. You can turn your boiler down to 60 degrees. It then heats the water to 60, sends it round and your radiators can still give 20 degrees of heat out, but the boiler doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the water at 60 than it does to keep it at 70. You should also not have your radiator valves all the way up for the same reason. Keep them half way, or just a bit more and they will still get hot, but will be more efficient. Also, new windows in tenements can be a false economy. We had double glazed sashes put in, only to find the wooden panels below and to the sides were letting just as much cold in - they have massive voids of cold air between them and the external brick, so curtains will do a better job than double glazing (draught proofing is worth doing though) by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 12th Feb 2023 12:44am)

  • https://carfueldata.vehicle-certification-agency.gov.uk/ This website will tell you the Euro rating of your car. It’s a pain in the hoop to use, especially on a phone. Put in your make, model and month and year of registration to find the right vehicle (all this info is on your V5 if anyone isn’t sure). Once you have the right make/model, click the blue highlighted link under the ‘description’ field. It then gives you all the vehicle info - you are looking for Euro rating. If it’s a petrol, Euro 4 or higher is ok. For a diesel, it’s got to be Euro 6. The GCC website only says most cars after a certain year of make should be compliant, but it’s not always the case. Some diesel Audis made after 2015 are Euro 5 for example, so would not be compliant. Actually, just checked - your V5 has the Euro rating on page 2. If you don’t have your V5, the link above will give you all the info. You can check the specific month and year your vehicle was registered here https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 1st Apr 2023 9:12am)
  • Get a second opinion from a recommended garage. Folk are always asking on this sub, so search other posts. I can recommend Kays Garage, but they might not be handy for you. I looked at the MOT history for the Mazda in your earlier post - I’m not a mechanic, nor an expert, but it seems to me like someone got a very thorough MOT checker that might have been a bit of a jobsworth, or touting for some extra business. The 2022 MOT has a fair list but they are all advisories - not reasons for failure, and they are not warnings/major defects either. Has the vehicle had any problems? Why did you decide to take it it for a service when it wasn’t due? by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 5th Apr 2023 2:35pm)
  • Sorry, I looked at the expiry date, not the date it was MOTd. I was referring to the 2021 MOT. It hasn’t done many miles since then, but makes sense due to lockdown. Corrosion could have set it if the vehicle has sat a long time, but none of the earlier MOTs picked it up. Again, not an expert, but it could be feasible that it was taken for MOT in 2021, and the garage were desperately trying to find something wrong with it to generate a bit of business post lockdown? I’m not saying it didn’t have problems, but you will get different opinions from different garages. If you put your V5 info in, it will tell you the garage that did the MOT - if it was Arnold Clark, then I would suggest they were more interested in selling a new car than doing a proper MOT. It’s definitely worth getting a second opinion. Ask friends/family where they go and try to find a garage you can trust. Do not use Arnold Clark, Kwik Fit, etc. as they will always find something and charge you a lot of money to replace a whole part when a repair may be the most effective option. You don’t need to service a car every 6 months unless you are doing mega miles. Every 12-15k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, is fine. If your car still has the service book, it will tell you the service intervals the manufacturer recommends. I’d usually suggest getting a service at the same time as your annual MOT, but find a good garage to do it. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 5th Apr 2023 2:51pm)
  • Saw on another comment that you had taken it to a Mazda dealer - they will always be the most expensive option to do anything to your car. They are a sales garage first and foremost, and will mainly service new cars that are still under the 3 year warranty. For a car of your age, an independent, trusted garage will be your best option. Even with a brand new car, you don’t have to use the Mazda dealer - legally, you can use any garage you want, and as long as they use approved parts and follow their service recommendations, Mazda would have to honour your warranty (or at least this was the case pre-Brexit). As someone else has said, if there is a small issue with your exhaust, Mazda will say it’s a whole new exhaust. Your local garage can repair the part that has a problem, if the rest of your exhaust is still perfectly fine. Having said that, still get a second opinion and if you think you have been sold something with a major defect, you are within the 6 months to go back to Scottish Motor Services. You would, however, have to be able to prove the defect was there 5 months ago. I am absolutely sure a good local garage can sort whatever is wrong at a much better price than Mazda have quoted you, and check the rest of the car over for your peace of mind. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 5th Apr 2023 8:10pm)

  • Get a wee web page (I used Wix as it was the easiest for me to use). Cost for the first two years was about £150 including my website address. Take a bit of time to learn how to get the most out of search engine optimisation (the key words to use that mean your website comes higher up the rankings). I think it gives a reassurance to potential clients that you are professional and a proper business. Also possibly worth looking at insurance, just in case you poke someone’s eyes out (sorry, I don’t know the process involved with what you do, but think about what the absolute worst scenario might be, and then figure out if you have the financial means and legal support to deal with the outcome. Then find out how much an insurance policy is and exactly what it covers, and decide if it is a worthwhile investment for you). Also get a Google page to show reviews (the blue search link when you Google things) - I can’t really remember how I did this, but Wix helped. Ask everyone you have done work for to leave you a Google review. Try not to have 20 done on the same day, as it flags as suspicious to Google. Also set up a FB Business page. I hate FB, and wasn’t on it before, so found it almost impossible to use, but it is handy for getting your name out there and asking your network of friends and family to share. I also think it’s easier to share contact info and phone number etc. than on Insta. Post one or two things a week if you can, and even if you haven’t done a job that week, something regarding a product you use, or a wee demo video will attract attention. Ask every client to leave a review afterwards on either your Google or FB (or both if you can). It’s also useful when you get a new client to ask how they found you - helps to understand which methods of marketing is most effective. I also got some postcard sized flyers and business cards made up - again, lots of options, but Vistprint were good and cheap. They also have a logo creator, so useful to try this before you do your website, as you can find a theme you like and carry it over. I then went up and down my local street asking shops, cafes and hairdressers if they would let me put a few out (appreciate that because of your line of work, hairdressers might be your competitor). Most supermarkets have a notice board you can post info on for free too. I got quite a few jobs from the flyers, and if you’re good, reliable and fairly priced, you will find that folk talk and pas on info, so one client might tell their sister, who tells a friend, who know someone getting married and before you know it, you’re doing a whole wedding party. Be fair to yourself - charge a price that is fair to you and to your client. Don’t rip yourself off - put a value on your time and stick to it. If you know you are good and reliable, you’re already better than half the folk out there, and I have found turning up on time and doing what I have promised makes you stand out a mile. Don’t let family and friends get ‘freebies’ - nothing wrong with mates rates, but people who love you should support your business, and paying a fair price and giving you a boost, wether it be reviews or recommendations, is the support you deserve. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 10th Apr 2023 1:27pm)

  • The area is fine - you’ll have absolutely no problems. There is a main road quote near it that is busy with traffic and you might get some noise from students going home after a night out, but it is not right on the road, so it won’t be noisy. If you are keeping to a budget, there are a few supermarkets nearby, but they are smaller convenience shops, so are more expensive. There is a larger supermarket called Waitrose nearby, but it can be quite expensive for some things. If you are planning on cooking for yourself, there are fruit and veg shops within an easy walk, Garden Fresh Exotics on Park Road is the best and cheapest. There are also 2 LIDLs which are a bit of a longer walk, but totally doable, and they are a bit cheaper for everything. If you don’t want to cook, there are a lot of takeaways nearby. Dario Pizza shop is on Queen Margaret Drive and does roof takeaway pizza. There is also a very popular pizza restaurant called Paesano on Great Western Road - you can sit in for a pizza, they start at £8 and the most expensive is no more than £12-13. They are meant to be authentic pizza, so can be a bit ‘runny’ on the top, but they are good. Immediately in front of your hotel, there is access to the Kelvin Walkway, through the fence and down a path. Turn right and go over the blue bridge to cross the river, and climb the steps and you are in the Botanic Gardens (5 min walk) or turn left and follow the path for 10-15 mins and you will get to Kelvingrove Park, which the museum is in. I probably wouldn’t use this path after dark, only because it is not very well lit, but through the day it is constantly busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists, and is safe. I’ve never been in the hotel, but it is mostly used by tradespeople and workers from out of town through the week. You should not have any problems with the location. I hope you enjoy your trip! by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 30th Apr 2023 8:13am)

The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow Uni is amazing too - so many different exhibits, from fossils to medical samples - and the cloisters are a nice wee wander too. The Hidden Lane on Argyle Street has lots of wee craft shops and cafes too - you could easily lose an hour here. Good on you for swerving the booze for a bit. I cannot understand how anyone can say this is a bad idea and doesn’t benefit everyone in the long run. We have to start doing things like this. Read the article. I do think GCC and the government haven’t given enough help to those that need it. Something like the scrappage scheme should have been put in place to help those that can’t afford it, and it should be paid for by increasing the VED on massive Range Rovers and big fuck off diesel cars that are only taxed on their CO2 output, but still pump out other poisonous gases. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 6th May 2023 8:58pm)

At least people are using it instead of leaving their shite on the hill like they used to. I think they should force Paesano, Piri Piri Fucking Chicken and all the other takeaways whose packaging ends up all over the place, to provide more bins. I guarantee this bin will be mainly empty pizza boxes, which take up lots of empty space. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 12th May 2023 9:46am)

  • Clip and Climb at Kelvinhall is great fun and an 8 year old is a great age for it. There is a place in Fenwick, which is up the M77 about 25 mins, one junction before Kilmarnock. It’s called Crawfurdland Tree Top adventures, and they have a Go Ape type assault course. They have 3 courses - the smallest is suitable for small kids and adults (my son did it when he was 6). It has rope bridges, tyres and 3 zip lines across the course. You can usually get round the course twice in the half hour slot, but we managed 3 times once, when there wasn’t anyone slower in front of us. It’s not the cheapest day out, but really good fun. They have a cafe and restaurant there too, which has very good home baking. If you are out that way, The Forum Cafe in Kilmarnock does the best ice cream in Scotland, if not the world (and I’ll fight anyone that disagrees). Only another 10 min drive from Crawfurdland. The Dean Park in Kilmarnock (5 mins from the Forum Cafe) has a nice walk along the river with easy access down to the river for chucking in stones. There is also deer, pigs and horses further in to the park, and a pretty good wooden adventure playground (but it is closed quite often for repairs). The park is maybe not worth the trip on its own, but one a nice day, it’s a really lovely place. If you were out that way for the rope climbing, it’s a good way to spend the rest of the day, and justify a longer trip out of the city. https://craufurdland.co.uk/activities/tree-top-trials/ by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 17th May 2023 8:37am)

  • The only thing I’d add here, is be persistent with the GP. You have said you will make an appointment - good on you, it’s the right thing to do and they will be able to help you. Each practice is different, but it can be difficult to get an appointment at the moment. Expect to be on hold for a good while. Some receptionists can be a bit frosty and will ask you to call back if there are no appointments left when you do get through. I’d politely ask to be seen as quickly as possible - explain you are struggling with mental health and need to speak to someone urgently. It is their job to try and filter out the urgent from the not so urgent - you are one of the urgent ones so please, politely, don’t take no for an answer. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sun 18th Jun 2023 3:23pm)

It might not be the most exciting Hogmanay for them, but if they can get a lift through on the afternoon of 31st, the Moxy and Hilton are both under £200 for the night at the moment. Not cheap, but would be less stressful for them, and they might even get some sleep, compared to staying at home and getting anxious about the taxi arriving. Compared to a taxi it might be an option? • Hacking and Patterson are THE worst factor. However, this does not allow them to shirk their responsibilities. I don’t know if your neighbours are absent landlords, or just don’t give a fuck about their building, but essential repairs cannot be ignored. [This](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/housing/repairs-and-improvements-s/property-factors-providing-services-to-homeowners-s/) is quite a good starting point in understanding how to get the factor doing what they should do. Check your contract with H&P, but there should be something about essential repairs to preserve the structure of the property not requiring a consensus sign off. This is not a disagreement between neighbours about what colour to paint the front door - if water starts coming in it will cause damage. Please also remember, whilst a leak due to wear and tear or lack of maintenance is not covered by the block insurance, any damage to your property caused by the water ingress should be. So the insurers won’t pay to fix the gutter or roof because they are old/blocked, but if the water ruins your flat, you can claim. If the repairs have been notified, but H&P have done nothing about it, the insurers may avoid any claim, because of a failure to prevent damage. I’d then be bringing a negligence claim against H&P under their own insurance. Don’t let them fob you off - follow the steps in the Citizens Advice link. Keep a record of every email, phone call and conversation. Follow up every phone call with an email copying the factor in, that summarises the conversation and the next steps that were agreed. If it gets to a complaint level, this will make everything much easier. Phone regularly, and give them deadlines to respond by. If they don’t respond, call back. I’ve even turned up at my factors offices before - they really don’t like that, but it gets things moving. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 19th Jul 2023 11:23am)
  • It can be quite soul destroying, especially when it’s something that relates to your home. If there are one or two like minded neighbours, it can be really helpful to have support from even one other person, to share the stress, chase the emails etc. Having said that, be wary of the ‘block WhatsApp chat’. It can be a handy catch all method of communication, and avoids huge email trails that can be tricky to follow, but they can become as stressful as dealing with factors. Hope you can make some progress. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 19th Jul 2023 12:44pm)

  • CCW on Byres Rd has been mentioned, and it has some decent stuff. There’s also Finnieston clothing a bit further down - mainly t shirts and shirts, but it has a good range and they are a Glasgow company. They make their own stuff that references the ship yards, but stock other brands too. Both places have a bit more stock on their website. There’s also a good wee place called W2 on Ruthven Lane that does some unusual brands, but it’s pricy. COS in Princes Square has some nice guys stuff, and it’s good quality, but some of it is quite oversized and odd fitting. It’s owned by H&M but is the higher end, higher quality, more expensive stuff. Reiss and Ted Baker are both sometimes good for smarter stuff, but quality varies massively - I’ve had great stuff and stuff that falls apart very quickly. Fat Buddha in town has some good gear, but is maybe a bit more skateboardy - Carhartt etc. Massimo Dutti stuff is shite, loses all its shape after a few washes. There’s a cracking company, online only called [Hebtroco](https://hebtro.co/). Their stuff is made in the UK, and is the best quality gear I have found. More expensive than an H&M, but it lasts so much longer and washes well, I think it’s probably comparable for £ per wear. Not a huge range, but good for wardrobe staples. Their jeans are brilliant - best I’ve ever had. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 9:08pm)
  • All the above are maybe a bit pricier than H&M and Zara, but I’ve given up on spending money on shote quality clothes. I’m not saying Primark, H&M are all bad quality (same as you, I’ve got some Primark shorts that have been going for years), but expensive doesn’t always mean good quality. Places like Massimo Dutti aren’t cheap, but you could spit through their t shirts, and you wash them once and they don’t fit any more. I had to return a pair of trousers to Zara last month. Bought them in two colours. Tried one pair on on the shop and they were great. Picked up the exact same product, size, etc in another colour and they were completely different. Uniqlo do some good stuff - like H&M pricing but bit better quality. Their jeans are about £40 and very good. They don’t have a store up here, but online orders are very quick and returns are easy. They have quite a big shop in Manchester if you’re ever down that way - think it’s the furthest north. M&S, Next and John Lewis all have decent quality guys gear. John Lewis just launched a range called Everyday, and some of it is surprisingly well priced. It did take me a wee while to realise I had reached ‘that age’, and I now shop in the same places as my Dad. by Farookbuls4r4 (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 9:42pm)
  • Whatever you decide to do, you will not be able to redecorate the wall straight away. Even if the paper comes off easily, there will be paste residue left in the surface which you cannot paint straight on to. You would need to either prime the wall with Zinsser Gardz first, or reline it properly, then repaint. If there is a crappy wallpaper job on there already, chances are it has been done to hide an even worse wall, so you will likely need to repair whatever is behind the paper, before you paint. The most cost effective way might be to get a professional in to remove the paper then redecorate - they will be able to deal with whatever surprise is hiding behind it. Prepare yourself for the possibility of replastering if the walls are really bad (tenements especially). A good decorator would be around £150-200 labour per day (maybe a bit higher or a bit lower depending on area). A shite decorator that will do a bollocks job then disappear without finishing it will be cheaper. by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 11th Aug 2023 9:09pm)
  • Harrogate is a pain in arse to drive to from Glasgow - anything round that Leeds area is not well served by any transport from the north. No direct trains. Quickest route by car is down to Penrith then across the A66 to Scotch Corner. There are still long stretches of this road that are single lane in both directions, so if you get stuck behind a lorry, tractor or caravan, it can take a while. I drive to Harrogate and Manchester regularly - Manchester is 40 miles longer but I can do it almost an hour quicker on a good day. If you haven’t done the drive yet, try it and decide if it’s for you. 200 miles on paper looks fine but it’ll be the best part of 4 hours. The A66 over the winter months can close due to weather and/or accidents. Both often close the road for hours at a time. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 12th Aug 2023 11:13am)
  • If you have Virgin or Sky, would they be able to prove you have been using their service via their contract? Would they even be able to bring a case in court? I’m genuinely asking out of interest. It’s the same with parking tickets - they send a generic letter to the registered keeper saying “you over stayed in Tesco”. If you reply, arguing that you were only 5 mins over, you have admitted it was you driving, so have incriminated yourself. Can Sky or Virgin share your info? by Farookbuls4r4 (Fri 18th Aug 2023 7:46pm)
  • I’ve had similar and was unsuccessful, but if you used the auto location feature on the app, I’d try and suggest this was down to bad location settings, and see what they say. The online map isn’t that clear either. I’d appeal - the ticket is frozen whilst under appeal so you don’t lose the 14 days to pay at £30. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 21st Aug 2023 10:33am)
  • I’d second this suggestion. Lots of colours available, and they are fully waterproof. They don’t have padding or filling at all, so you do need layers for warmth, but this is what you want for Glasgow - you can get unseasonably warm temperatures with rain in between. A fully waterproof top layer dries quicker. I find the padded waterproof jackets aren’t always completely waterproof, so if you get soaked, they can take ages to dry out again. The Rains ones are nice and would work for smart casual, but you could find an equivalent for cheaper as they are on the more expensive end. by Farookbuls4r4 (Wed 30th Aug 2023 9:55am)

  • I can’t give you any experience of this, or any other experiences, but I have a family member who spent 3 years trying to use one of these vouchers and eventually gave up. The weather needs to be absolutely perfect or they won’t go up, which can obviously be a problem in Scotland. They had at least 6 bookings cancelled, a few on the day, once they had arrived at the venue, because the weather wasn’t right. It can’t be helped, and I wouldn’t want to go up in anything but perfect weather, but the cancellations meant there were lots of people trying to rebook, so slots (especially weekends) were hard to get and you go back in to the queue if your booking gets cancelled. I’d try to book directly with someone, as opposed to these experience days, and check any vouchers have a long expiration date on them. by Farookbuls4r4 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 9:54am)
  • There’s some good advice here already - just remember mint will spread to huge areas, quite quickly, and overtake other herbs, so keep it to a container on its own. • As far as insurance goes, you can collectively buy a policy for the whole block, with the policyholder being something along the lines of “The Co-proprietors for the time being of 123 Buchanan Street”. It would insure the entire building, but you would still need to arrange your own individual contents policy. To understand the difference between the two, imagine if you could pick up your building and turn it upside down - everything that fell out is your contents, everything that stayed put is covered by the buildings policy, including carpets, kitchen units etc. You can probably arrange a policy yourself online, but an insurance broker can advise you on how much to insure the building for, the right cover to purchase, and will also obtain quotes for you. It should cost you nothing to ask a broker to get quotes for you - they receive commission from the insurer if you decide to go ahead with cover. They may charge an admin fee on top, but again, only if you decide to go ahead. A block buildings is much more simple in the event that you have to claim, as you are only dealing with one policy and one insurer. It means there should not be any difference in cover between various policies. It’s also easier in the event of something like an escape of water. If you all have an individual policy, they person who has the water ingress claims (for example, upstairs neighbour’s washing machine leaks through your ceiling - as long as it’s not down to negligence, you have to claim for the water damage to your flat). This can something’s feel a bit unfair, and cause issues between neighbours. With a block policy, you are all the policyholder, so the block claims (you would still be liable for the excess). There is lots of advice online about self factoring. You can find a local insurance broker through Google - plenty to choose from in Glasgow. Brokers can legally provide advice across the whole of the insurance market, and are very heavily regulated. If you approach an insurer directly, they can only provide you advice on their own products. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 11th Nov 2023 4:59pm)
  • P.S. Hacking & Paterson are bastards. When I dealt with them, 40p of every £1 they billed you for insurance went in their pocket. It’s probably higher now. Ask them what commission they receive from their insurance broker for arranging cover on your behalf - they have to tell you legally. Also, because they buy a block policy for the whole portfolio of buildings they manage, they pay Insurance Premium Tax (currently 12% - applies to pretty much all insurance in the UK). They then charge you a proportion of that policy for your cover, but because they are the policy holder, and are providing factoring services, it is subject to VAT at 20%, so by using a factor, you are paying tax twice on the insurance element. by Farookbuls4r4 (Sat 11th Nov 2023 5:06pm)

  • The Ringo app has a map of the city, and shows the codes to park in various areas. Lots of the streets in this area don’t have a code, because they are resident only. I believe this was done when they brought in the parking area to Hillhead - the residents voted to have the streets immediately off Byres Road as resident only as it is a popular shopping area and there were concerns that even with paid spaces, they would be filled with shoppers most of the day. [This is the link](https://glasgowgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c7573c30724645c7861698125682b78a) to the GCC parking zone map, but as with most things GCC, it’s not very user friendly or clear. • Those that are suggesting flying, just remember you still need to get from the airport to the city (or wherever you are going). The Stanstead and Gatwick express trains can cost more than the cheap flight down. Heathrow is very easy to get to and from now the Elizabeth line is open (£12.80). I’ve done the Megabus before, and whilst it’s the cheapest, it’s also the longest. It stops at motorway services for long periods to let the driver rest, and if you have anything to do as soon as you arrive, you’ll be knackered - bear this in mind if you were heading down for something important like an interview. [Split My Fair](https://www.splitmyfare.co.uk/) is a good site for train tickets - it will work out the cheapest combination of tickets to get you where you want to be, often on the same train, so you don’t need to change. by Farookbuls4r4 (Tue 21st Nov 2023 8:37am)
